Frame Up Built Road Runner Ray Barton 472 Dual Quad Cross Ram HEMI 5 Speed
The showroom here at RK Motors Charlotte is full of the fastest Mopars on the market and we've built our reputation on bringing you the best cars money can buy. Our latest offering is this 472 HEMI powered 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. Custom built from its Cross Ram intake to its Boyd Coddington rear wheels, this car is brutally appealing and dangerously fast. If you're looking for a bad to the bone classic that's fun to look at and even more fun to drive; your search is over.
Even though this car is not original, it's still important to decode the VIN so we know exactly what we're dealing with. This car was a true Road Runner as the VIN decodes:
R: Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite
M: Medium, Road Runner
21: 2 door coupe
H: 383 330hp or 335hp 1-4 BBL V8
G2: Assembled in St. Louis MO
234595: Build sequence
This flawless Road Runner benefitted from a professional frame up restoration in 2006 and according to the car's owner, it retains all original panels. When it comes to bodywork on a car like this everything has to be smooth, because there really isn't anything on the body to draw the eye away from even the smallest ripple or imperfection. The 'impact' of this car, or essentially what makes or breaks the car, is the shape as a whole instead of the details in the design. Step up close to this Plymouth and it becomes very clear that a lot of time was spent to ensure its super clean look made the right impression. Once that was accomplished, the car was prepped and bathed in Mopar R3 red all the way from the spotless engine bay to the trunk jam. The result is a perfect 'long and low' Road Runner profile with factory close gaps, exceptionally straight panels and power actuated doors that close with a confident thunk. In fact, the paint on this car is so fresh that I was surprised to walk up to it and not smell the signature 'new paint' smell that comes as a nice bonus on body shop fresh cars.
The clean and modern designs of the 60s were a refreshing breath of fresh air from overwrought 50s styling and no car showcases that mindset better than the 1969 Road Runner. New chrome trim is kept to a minimum to highlight the cars intentionally simplistic design and new Road Runner decals and script emblems on the doors add just enough detail to complete the look. Within that chrome trim you'll find new crystal clear glass including what I believe to be one of the best details of the car; the curved rear window. Up front, the car features a straight grille with new lighting and a new chrome bumper. Out back, new '69 Road Runner exclusive tail lights and a new chrome bumper combine with a new road runner decal, a new Road Runner badge and a discrete little Hemi badge for the not so discrete motor. A traditional flat black Road Runner A-12 style lift off hood featuring four chrome hood pins and a custom red “472 HEMI” decal on its scoop tops everything off.
Pull the four pins on the hood and reveal the incredible Ray Barton 472 HEMI Cross Ram engine and see why this car goes from very appealing to MUST HAVE. Sitting on top of the aluminum Cross Ram intake is two Holley 770 carburetors that feed air and fuel to HEMI Stage V aluminum heads for a very impressive 10.5:1 compression ratio. To keep everything nice and cool, a Be Cool aluminum radiator complete with an electric cooling fan is coupled to the engine via billet hose connectors while a deep sump oil pan supplies plenty of friction reducing oil. Form and function co-exist now better than ever as an MSD coil utilizes a billet distributor to send sparks through Red Moroso wires which happen to match the Torche Red engine bay. A trick billet master cylinder complements two chrome air cleaners, billet wire looms and braided hoses to add a finished look to the top of the motor. A chrome Powermaster performance alternator, a billet serpentine belt system and ceramic long tube headers round out the package while adding more visual appeal. This motor is serious business; it's all there, it's hooked up and it's ready to play all day long.
The bottom of the car is just as nice as the top of the car. Cosmetically; it's beautiful, with a stainless H pipe equipped true dual exhaust system continuing from the headers all the way past the new stainless gas tank. The under carriage is exceptionally clean with chromed and powdercoated suspension pieces adding color at all four corners of the car. A McLeod hydraulic clutch, housed within a scatter shield, mates to a Tremec 5-speed transmission to throw that massive Hemi power to the rear end. Now, at first glance, you might not notice the deep dish on the 15x12 Boyd Coddington Smoothie rear wheels because the car is so well done. But upon further examination, you'll discover a narrowed Moser Engineering Dana 60 rear end that runs 325/50/15 BF Goodrich G-Force drag radials neatly tucked under this Road Runners rear quarters. I don't know about you, but that's the kind of well-done customization that brings a smile to my face. Keeping those drag radials connected to the pavement is welded monoleaf springs, new rear shocks, welded sub frame connectors and CalTracs traction bars. Up front the motor rides on an aftermarket K member and a Bill Riley Motorsports AlterKtion front end kit that connects to pavement via 15x7 Boyd Coddington Smoothie wheels with 215/70/15 BF Goodrich radials. Flaming River Industries rack and pinion power steering, a Bill Riley Motorsports sway bar, tubular control arms and QA1 Motorsports coilover shocks combine to provide modern handling characteristics. An electric vacuum pump helps Wilwood front brakes with chrome calipers and drilled and slotted rotors combine with Stainless Steel brakes and slotted rotors in the rear to bring all that power and weight to a safe halt.
Hit the remote door popper and sit down inside the car where the classic good looks of an American muscle car meld seamlessly with modern upgrades and conveniences. The new bucket seats are covered in black ultraleather and feature real suede leather inserts. Custom door panels feature chrome trim and carry the same theme as my favorite part of the interior; the long custom wrapped console with its gorgeous custom wood insert. Housed in the console is controls for the power windows and a traditional pistol grip shifter which lines up perfectly beside a billet steering wheel connected to an Ididit tilt column. Billet pedals hang above modern carpet that has been installed over Dynamat insulation which keeps unwanted heat and noise out of the cockpit. The custom dash features AutoMeter Pro Comp gauges, controls for the air conditioning system and a Sony Xplod CD player. About the only thing that isn't custom inside this car is the factory style headliner which has retrofitted shoulder belts hanging from it. Hit the fob to pop the electric trunk latch, which also happens to have a manual release button hidden under the car, and reveal a completely finished trunk with panels clad in Ultraleather and a trunk pan covered in the same modern carpet as the interior.
The documentation for this car includes two huge binders full of information about the build. In those binders you'll find receipts, part numbers for replacement items, installation instructions, the official Ray Barton dyno sheet, an official appraisal of the car when the build was complete and an itemized cost sheet broken down by manufacturer for the complete build process. This is one of the most detailed builds I've ever seen; the owner even has a receipt for the custom hood decal and hardware for the hood pins.
This car has it all: looks to kill, power that never stops and a list of custom components that would take a builder years to duplicate and assemble. Where else can you find this combination of power and killer looks without having to do a much more expensive long term build yourself? We'd be happy to build you one just like it for $200K… Or you could grab this one up before someone else does. Call today!
