Description

The great thing about the evolution of hot rodding is: over the past 30 years a vast array of great products has continually streamed onto the market. And presently, anyone with a check book and an affinity for going way too fast and looking way too good can build anything from state-of-the-art avant-garde to old school cool. This sweet Ford coupe, featuring custom mechanicals, big block power and timeless aesthetics, is a ground-up build that combines the core strengths of original hot rodding with an uncompromising vision and top-notch componentry. And, if you're looking to score a fully sorted custom that mixes classic good looks with modern road manners, it's a strong candidate for your next street rod!

BODYWORK/TRIM

The product of a detailed, ground-up build that was completed in September of 2009, this hot rod starts with Ronson Street Rods fiberglass that manifests as a 1934 Ford 3-window coupe. That composite has been carefully massaged and lovingly bathed in rich black 2-stage, which reflects seriously classy form. And that form grants the kind of eye-popping appeal that can turns heads anytime, anywhere!

A clever descriptor for this slicked off coupe might be “traditionally unique”. That's because, even though this Ford makes excellent use of common modifications, it does so in an era of conservative, billet-tinged street rodding. At the front of the car, painted frame horns center a polished spreader beneath a chromed, original-style grille and polished Ford Twolites that case 10-inch, commercial candles. Behind those dual-mode torches, a louvered Rootlieb hood fronts tinted glass that, along with a flush Center High Mount Stop Lamp, supports a tough, 3.5-inch chop. At the sides of that chop, shaved suicide doors reflect polished hot rod mirrors. And at the back of the car, a shaved, electronically-operated decklid caps LED tail lamps that, cribbed from a 1941 Chevy, light a painted fuel tank, a polished fuel cap and a second polished spreader.

ENGINE

By now, it's probably pretty obvious this Ford was built to be seen. But, thanks to the 408 cubic inch Chevy big block rumbling beneath the car's steel hood, that might be easier said than done! Beginning life as a hot 402, then benefitting from a professional .030 overbore, the body-matched mill revs under an 850cfm Pro Form carburetor. That carb, which rides under a polished air cleaner, feeds a coated Weiand intake. At the perimeter of that intake, cast heads, finished with custom valve covers, cap a solid lifter cam that helps create stout 10 to 1 compression. That compression is sparked by loomed MSD Super Conductor plug wires, which are snapped to a choice Mallory distributor. Below those wires, coated long-tube headers take care of spent gases while polished pulleys spin a coated Edelbrock water pump between a polished AC compressor and a polished Powermaster alternator. At the front of those ancillaries, an aluminum radiator circulates clean coolant past billet clamps and a large puller fan. First-class details abound, from braided fuel lines and a MQQN pressure gauge to polished breathers and a polished coolant reservoir. And the big engine looks that good while churning out roughly 485 horsepower!

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Under this impressive classic, a custom chassis utilizes a custom, 4-bar suspension to produce new age ride and handling characteristics. That chassis is founded on boxed frame rails, which have been channeled 3.5-inches in to the car's body. That polished suspension, supplied by Pete & Jakes, follows a POSIES spring and a 4-inch dropped Magnum axle with adjustable coil-overs and a TCI rear sway bar. At the center of those bones, a Tremec TR3340 5-speed spins a narrowed Ford 9-inch, which centers 4.11 gears between a posi-traction differential and 31-spline axles. Quick stops are provided by polished Wilwood calipers, which clamp four drilled and slotted rotors. Turns come courtesy of a chromed Vega quick-ratio steering box. A killer soundtrack is provided by a 2.5-inch, true-dual exhaust system, which seats Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers between rowdy cutouts and polished stainless tips. At the corners of the car, polished wheels spin 185/65R15 Mastercraft Touring LSRs in front of 345/55R16 BF Goodrich Sport Truck T/As. And, as with the 408, detailing is on-point, with a polished Moroso oil pan leading a spry Holley fuel pump.

INTERIOR

Pop this coupe's electric doors and you'll find a stylishly retro interior that's founded on quality Dynamat insulation. Krist Kustoms StreamLine buckets kick off a storm of Bentley Ultra Red leather upholstery. At the sides of those seats, pleated door panels anchor small power window switches on billet armrests. Below those panels, like-new carpet floats piped mats around billet foot pedals and a speed-drilled shifter. At the front of the car, a body-matched dash hangs a full array of Auto Meter telemetry above controls for Vintage Air conditioning. At the top of the car, a custom headliner frames a billet console that's finished with a JVC CD player. And the driver stays connected to the road through a polished steering wheel, which rides a polished, tilting column.
