Is this 2007 Mercedes CLK63 AMG the perfect car? Fast, stylish, technological, luxurious, built like a Panzer tank and ready for open-air cruising, it might just be the Swiss Army knife of world-class motoring. The cool thing about a brand like Mercedes, or Swiss Army for that matter, is: they're really good at offering everything their clientele could ever want or need. So, looking for a low-mileage luxury car that's pretty much great at everything? This 2007 CLK should be at the top of your list!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Despite their recent challenges, Mercedes-Benz is a very fortunate automaker. Not only do they have a great lineup of legendary, well-engineered cars, they also have a top notch in-house tuner brand that can take virtually anything the Benz boys produce and turn it into something REAL special. Fastidiously maintained, and driven just a few thousand miles per year since its z-rated tires hit the asphalt, this 2007 CLK63 AMG shows the kind of mileage that, in the Mercedes world, amounts to merely break-in time. The car's all-too-appropriate Obsidian Black paint is exceptionally dynamic and absolutely nails the formal appearance Daimler has spent over 100 years cultivating. Fit and finish is just as you'd expect from something with a three-point star in its grille. The car is an outstanding piece that features world-class build quality and laser-straight body lines!
Like all of Daimler's best luxury metal, this drop-top's styling is brilliantly executed with elegant proportions that rightfully place form over function. At the front of the car, a chrome-trimmed grille cages a chrome, 3-point star between bright fog lights, a chrome-trimmed valance and Bi-Xenon Active Head Lamps that feature a built-in a washing system. Behind that grille, an angled hood founds a Mercedes performance badge in front of like-new glass and a clean cloth top. At the sides of that grille, chrome-trimmed spears reflect classy door handles, European cornering lamps, small “6.3 AMG” emblems and electronic, body-matched mirrors. And at the back of those spears, a second chrome-trimmed valence frames pristine taillights, polished tailpipes and a Mercedes-branded decklid that floats an LED Center High Mount Stop Lamp beneath a stylish spoiler.
ENGINE
Toss the wide hood and you'll find a highly advanced DOHC V8 that's so smooth it'll make you forget you're even in a car. Officially AMG's first wholly designed powerplant, and officially named the M156, this impressive, big-bore V8 delivers an Autobahn baking 481 horsepower and a continent shifting 465 lb./ft. of torque straight from the factory. Along with providing the physical sensation of having a rocket engine strapped to your derriere, this heavy cruiser catapults to freeway speeds in mere sports car time lapses; and has no problem quickly reaching its electronically limited 186 MPH terminal velocity. Flick the key and the historically designated mill lights off instantly, humming to life with a technical roar that seems to float through the tail pipes. Fully pressurize the electronic fuel injectors and the smooth powerplant provides plenty of torque at any speed. And that's before you factor in this Benz's spry ECU tune, performed by Charlotte's own GMP Performance, which follows a healthy 520 horsepower with a stout 481 lb./ft. of torque.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Under this classy cabriolet's floor, rock-solid Mercedes engineering provides a luxurious ride that, while not too firm, also doesn't share the softer characteristics of a traditional luxury barge. That's because, like its engine, the car's undercarriage was completely massaged by AMG. An upgraded, fully independent suspension benefits from a wider rear track, 18-inch machined and graphite accented sport wheels and sticky 225/40 and 255/35 Nexen N3000 rubber. One squeeze of the throttle and a tri-mode 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission seamlessly streams power to a highway-friendly rear end. Need to stop? No worries; a well-balanced 4-wheel disc brake system utilizes standard ABS, drilled and slotted rotors and AMG-branded calipers to provide a reliable, drama-free escape from virtually any speed. And when you're carving curves and tearing up the twisties, Electronic Stability Control, capable of a 90 degree turn at 50 MPH, ensures you arrive at your destination quickly and safely.
INTERIOR
Inside this fashionable land rocket, you'll find a Stone leather interior that's Teutonic luxury at its finest. I'm guessing nobody has ever used the car's back seat for anything, and the front seats, heated leather thrones which feature active vent technology and small AMG emblems, show virtually no wear at all. In front of those seats, a combination of analog and digital gauges is laid out in typical Mercedes fashion, with simple pointers framing a bright driver information center. Mercedes has become the savior of modern consoles by designing an artful piece that features a perfect combination of leather touch points and Burl Walnut wood surfaces. The driver spins a dark-trimmed steering wheel around AMG Speedshift paddles and buttons for the car's top-notch audio. And, as far as amenities go, Mercedes famed Parktronic and KeylessGo systems, a full AM/FM/CD/MP3 sound system that includes a glove box-mounted disc changer, a DVD-based Command Navigation system and a power trunk closer kick off a roster of hardware that includes pretty much any neat option Mercedes could imagine.
