APPEARANCE/CONDITION
The beneficiary of a comprehensive restoration, this slick drop-top wraps smooth Tuxedo Black paint in traditional white Hockey Stripes. Steal one glance down the sides of the car's rock-solid body and you'll find that great care was taken to ensure all seams are both narrow and precise. Step closer to the car's mirror-like paint and check out flat surfaces that are the product of both rust-free original sheetmetal and high quality replacement panels. Grab the car's well-adjusted hood and feel how smoothly it closes to provide an excellent fit that's set off by a glossy clearcoat sheen. And ultimately, it all adds up to one very well done classic that's ready to be the center of attention both on the road and at the show.
When it comes to purity of form, it's hard to think of a better-looking car than the first-generation Camaro. It's a solid and straightforward design that continues to age exceptionally well, especially in the company of its exaggerated and extroverted competitors. At the front of this tasteful F1, an SS-branded grille hangs stylish Rally Sport headlights above a polished bumper, clear parking lamps and a traditional D80 chin spoiler. Above that grille, a ZL-2 Cowl Induction Hood floats between a bright Camaro header emblem and fresh glass that's seated behind straight trim, satin wipers and a power-operated top. At the sides of that glass, familiar door handles and correct chrome mirrors combine with chrome wheel lips and dent-free rocker spears to frame intricate emblems, stylish marker lamps and ornate quarter louvers. And at the back of the car, a guarded bumper splits a clean “SS” emblem, correct Rally Sport taillights and an early D80 deck spoiler.
POWER
Deception isn't always a bad thing, especially for the deceiver. Toss this Chevy's timeless hood and you'll find aesthetics that, in coordination with the car's front fenders, advertise 427 cubic inches of buff big block. However, a more acute gaze reveals a roster of choice aftermarket components that adorn 509 cubic inches of stoplight-slaying power! At the top of the mill, a polished air cleaner funnels breeze through a 750cfm Holley 4-barrel. That carb rides a familiar Edelbrock intake, which feeds lightweight aluminum heads that are dressed in highly polished valve covers. At the back of those covers, a proven Pertronix distributor sparks MSD Super Conductor plug wires, which snake around predictable iron exhaust manifolds. In front of those tubes, standard V-belts twist an aluminum water pump beside modern power steering and a Frigidaire-branded AC compressor. All that high performance heat is kept in check by pliable GM hoses and a deep radiator. And details like braided Summit fuel lines and a proven Delco Moraine brake booster reinforce the idea that this coupe is built around performance.
POWER MANAGEMENT
That sharp focus on ability carries right over, or should we say under, to this Chevy's fully sorted chassis. Behind the spry engine, a lucid Tremec 5-speed spins a familiar GM 12-bolt that's finished with a posi-traction differential and 3.73 gears. Opposite that pumpkin, factory-style power steering uses a Saginaw gearbox to keep everything pointed straight. All that 'scoot and slide' hardware rides on a fully restored suspension that's been strengthened with quality CalTracs traction bars. Stops come courtesy of power-assisted discs and drums. Charred fossils float through a large-diameter exhaust system that's threaded around throaty Xlerator turbo mufflers. Power meets the pavement through attractive Rally Wheels, which spin 235/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 255/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. And the car's solid floors, which have been coated in traditional Satin Black paint, feature a full array of finishing components that includes a tough scattershield and boxed subframe connectors.
COMFORT
Open this F1's doors and you'll find a stylish Black Houndstooth interior that's been lovingly restored. At the center of the car, a vinyl-trimmed bench complements Deluxe bucket seats. In front of those seats, a wood-trimmed dash founds rebuilt telemetry above cool air conditioning and a correct Delco AM/FM radio. At the base of that dash, monochromatic mats surf monochromatic carpet, which frames a wood-trimmed console that's finished with a polished TKO shifter and 4-pack accessory gauges. Opposite that console, Deluxe side panels frame traditional door hardware. And in front of the driver, a reproduction Rally Wheel laps a tilting steering column.
