It cruises like a champ, charges like a bull, and oozes the style and class that made the original goat the stuff of legend. RESTORATION/APPEARANCE
Documented by Pontiac Historic Services, this authentic 242 VIN GTO is the beneficiary of a fresh, ground-up restoration. That reboot, conducted by the pros at Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania's Tony's Muscle Cars, dressed mostly-original sheetmetal in a rich coat of Gloss Black 2-stage. And today, this handsome Poncho walks a fine line between tastefully modern and traditionally conservative. At the front of the car's sinister profile, an original Endura nose seats “GTO” branded grilles between stainless-trimmed headlights, ornate parking lamps and a subtle chin spoiler. At the top of that grille, a broad hood centers small scoops and a factory tach in front of tinted glass that's framed in straight stainless and reflected in a polished mirror. At the sides of the car, bright “GTO” call-outs add a little pizzazz, while traditional door handles perfectly complement requisite wheel lips and polished rocker guards. And out back, a new bumper hangs conservative taillights beneath a big wing and a third vivid “GTO” call-out.
POWER
Gaze upon this coupe's crisp engine bay and you'll find 6.2 liters of divine GM small block. Purchased new in October of 2017, and officially known as the Chevrolet Performance LS376/480, that trusty engine twists respectable 10.7 to 1 compression into 495 horsepower and 473 lb./ft. of torque. At the top of the block, a remote Spectre filter element feeds a polished air tube, which funnels wind in to a proven GM throttle body that fronts a lightweight GM intake. That air meets spark in rectangular-port L92-style heads, which ride under a vivid plenum cover and Pontiac-branded coil covers. A nodular crank, powdered connecting rods and hypereutectic pistons compress that volatile union. A racing-inspired LS Hot Cam maximizes intake efficiency through better breathing. Speaking of breathing, that smooth valvetrain funnels spent gases through stainless shorty headers. There's a massive aluminum radiator that's slid between a dressed cowl, a polished cap and flashy chrome puller fans. Vintage Air Front Runner serpentine components spin an aluminum water pump between a chrome alternator and a chrome AC compressor. Everything communicates well thanks to Chevrolet Performance Connect & Cruise electronics. And, as you likely deduced from our high-resolution photos, the all-aluminum mill rolls in a smoothed, Gloss Black frame that's finished with niceties like a Holley oil pan, AN6 fluid lines and polished brake components that were sourced from The Right Stuff Detailing.
POWER MANAGEMENT
Take a gander under this cool A-Body and you'll find a fully detailed chassis that mixes new age technology with old school durability. A Metallic Silver frame, sandblasted bare during the detailed restoration, reflects thoroughly solid floorpans that, likewise sandblasted, have been dressed in a clean layer of Satin Black. At the center of those floors, a widened transmission tunnel frames a Tremec T56 Super Magnum 6-speed that, like the car's engine, was sourced directly from Chevrolet Performance. That gearbox engages a McLeod hydraulic clutch to spin a requisite 10-bolt axle that's fitted with 3.55 gears and a posi-traction differential. Stopping is a cinch thanks to drilled and slotted rotors, and four powder-coated, power-assisted calipers. Factory-style power steering complements a modernized suspension that's finished with upsized sway bars, 2-inch drop spindles, tubular front control arms and boxed rear control arms. Exhaust is handled by a series of aluminized pipes, which swirl spent gases through an H-shaped crossover, throaty turbo mufflers and polished, quad-outlet tips. And at the corners, proven Nitto Invos, sized 245/45R17 and 275/40R20 respectively, spin custom Diamond Back Classics redline treatments around chromed Ridler hoops.
COMFORT
Open the car's solid doors and you'll find a conservative Black interior that's stylish and very livable. There's a quartet of seats, two of which are fitted small headrests, all of which are wrapped in restoration-fresh vinyl. In front of those seats, a capped dash hangs an attractive, engine-turned instrument panel in front of trick Dakota Digital telemetry, 180 watts of modern audio and controls for Vintage Air conditioning. At the bottom of that dash, fade-free carpet bridges the gap between new side panels and a proven Hurst shifter. The driver traces the road through a polished steering wheel. And behind the cockpit, a custom-upholstered trunk trades mats and spackle for vinyl and carpet.
