BODYWORK/TRIM
One can't help but smile when they look at a Chevelle this cool. Assembled in Flint, Michigan, it's everything car guys dream of from the first time they say “muscle car” to the day they trade their high octane V8 for an electric rascal motor. Wrapping rich Tuxedo Black 2-stage in Classic White Super Sport stripes, this Chevy is the product of a comprehensive restoration. Its profile is a carefully orchestrated combination of great panel gaps, doors that close better-than-new, and a flat finish that stretches from tip to tail. And presently, the car rolls as one high quality head turner that sets the standard for any classic that dare show its face at the same cruise night!
The overall look of this coupe is beyond factory fresh. And thanks to an astute attention to detail, the car sports the kind of killer eyeball appeal that makes casual by-standers stop and take notice. At the front of its body, a divided grille hangs a bold “SS” emblem between a mirrored bumper, clear parking lamps and traditional halogen headlights. At the top of that grille, a functional Cowl Induction Hood balances factory lanyards in front of like-new glass that's cleared by hidden wipers, topped with fresh rails and framed in polished trim. At the sides of that bonnet, a sculpted profile hangs “SS 502” scripts above standard fender trim that perfectly complements factory mirrors and correct door handles. And at the back of the car, a second mirrored bumper centers a familiar Super Sport inlay between silver-trimmed tail lamps and a classy Chevelle trunk script.
ENGINE
While the appearance of the famed Chevelle Super Sport is a story all its own, what really made the car special is what lived between its fenders. Lift this Chevy's glossy hood and you'll find a 1972 454 that's been restored to a detailed, show worthy appearance. At the top of the hot block, oxygen flows from a K&N X-Stream air cleaner to a big Holley 4-barrel that's juiced by a Summit pressure gauge and polished fluid lines. That air/fuel mixture floods a lightweight Winters intake, which anchors cast iron heads under chrome valve covers and a billet breather. At the back of those covers, a spry MSD distributor sequences fire between a reproduction Delco battery and quality Taylor plug wires. Opposite that distributor, March serpentine components spin a Weiand water pump behind a polished alternator, a chrome AC compressor and trusty Flaming River power steering. Cooling is provided by a beefy aluminum radiator, which funnels water past a polished support and two SPAL cooling fans. Since most '70 Chevelles came factory-equipped with power disc brakes, an appropriate Delco Moraine booster is present and accounted for. And, aesthetically, the Satin Black engine compartment is impressively clean, serving as a perfect cocoon for the car's Chevy Orange mill.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
That impressive powertrain twists torque through a fresh Richmond 6-speed, which spins a tough, 12-bolt axle that's finished with an LPW ULTRA inspection cover. That drivetrain rolls on a fully rebuilt suspension, which supports a lowered ride height with boxed Hotchkis control arms and beefy Hotchkis sway bars. The car's modern power steering is augmented with a traditional array of power-assisted discs and drums. Coated Hooker Competition headers dump spent gases in to large-diameter pipes, which center an X-shaped crossover in front of FLO-PRO V Force mufflers. At the corners, Hot Rod Hank's RT5s spin 255/50R17 Falken Ziex S/TZ01s in front of 275/50R17 Falken Ziex S/TZ01s. And this Chevelle's clean, Satin Black floors are dotted with high quality details like a deep-sump oil pan, stainless hard lines and a fresh fuel tank.
INTERIOR
Pop this A-Body's solid doors and you'll find a crisp Black interior that's both attractive and timeless. In the middle of that cockpit, taut vinyl buckets are in excellent shape, showing no signs of wear. In front of those seats, a classy Super Sport dash hangs deluxe telemetry next to modern air conditioning, modern Alpine audio and a trio of Auto Gage accessory gauges. At the base of that dash, fade-free carpet floats Chevelle-themed floor mats around a Long short-throw shifter. In front of the driver, a half-wrapped steering wheel spins polished spokes around a subtle bowtie. And behind the passengers, a restored trunk hides a correct jack under a full-size spare tire.
