Description

Want some incredible Ford muscle? Want it in a package that doesn't require red ropes and a car bubble? Well, as the old saying goes: “Car culture starts where the assembly line stops”. And now that more and more authentic, numbers-matching classics are being confined to private collections, enthusiasts are filling the void with creations like this killer Mustang resto-mod. The beneficiary of a recent rotisserie restoration, this divine coupe wraps a spry 289/5-speed drivetrain in swank grayscale aesthetics that dramatically emphasize form. If you've always dreamed of owning a choice pony car, but don't want the inherent stress that comes with authenticity, here's the perfect solution!

MONOCHROMATIC MOXIE

The beneficiary of a nut-and-bolt, rotisserie restoration that was completed in March of 2017, this substantial pro-tourer is constructed of all-original sheetmetal, save for a Ford replacement hood. Naturally, the build began with a complete dismantling of the car's solid body. Once that steel had been stripped, shaped, primed and block-sanded, a lustrious combination of custom PPG base donned varying swaths of gloss and flat clear. When that prize pigment was finessed into an austere depiction of wet-looking Metallic Silver and Charcoal Gray planes, red outlining stripes added a perfect finishing touch. And today, this nouveau pony rolls as a rich custom that champions classic style and world-class workmanship!

In the world of resto-mods, the key to attaining great presence is taking something familiar and freshening it just enough to create a lasting impression. In other words, the idea is to take someone who's seen hundreds of '66 Mustangs and give them definitive reasons to specifically remember this car. Those reasons begin with a tucked and smoothed bumper, which hangs silky Charcoal paint over Charcoal-trimmed LED parking lamps. Opposite those lamps, a mesh grille, complete with Charcoal paint, centers a color-keyed horse in front of a functional Cougar Eliminator hood. Behind that hood, Charcoal wipers clear new glass, which is seated behind Charcoal frames and Charcoal drip rails. Opposite those rails, a clean profile follows Charcoal mirrors with Ringbrothers door handles. Behind those handles, sequential LED taillights frame a custom fuel door. And, opposite that door, a GT-style valance plants bright reverse lamps and tailored exhaust outlets beneath a second tucked, smoothed and grayed bumper.

WINDSOR FOR THE WIN

Hoist this coupe's Ford-fresh hood and you'll find 289 cubic inches of Windsor V8 that was fully rebuilt during the detailed restoration. At the top of the Matte Red mill, a big air cleaner funnels wind in to a 650cfm Holley that's fed through braided fluid lines and a liquid-filled Aeromotive pressure gauge. The resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer 289 intake to aluminum Edelbrock heads. When those heads flood the cylinders, an MSD Pro-Billet distributor sequences fire between MSD 6AL ignition and loomed plug wires. Those wires cage an iron block, which employs a quality Comp Cams Magnum valvetrain. Spent gases are jettisoned through Hooker long-tube headers. The combustion's cooling is provided by a color-keyed aluminum radiator, which stores water between dual SPAL puller fans and a snazzy catch can. Charging comes courtesy of a color-keyed Billet Specialties Tru Trac accessory drive. Construction included a roster of first rate ancillaries, like Ringbrothers hood supports, hidden American Autowire wiring and a proven Wilwood master cylinder. And overall, the car's custom engine compartment is exceptionally well done, framing modified shock towers and an adjustable CPP strut brace in a custom firewall and custom inner fenders.

THE RETRO STOPS HERE

At the bottom of this Mustang, Metallic Silver floors frame a heavily upgraded undercarriage. A Tremec T5 5-speed, sourced new from Bowler Performance, utilizes a Centerforce clutch to spin a Traction Lok differential around a 9-inch pumpkin and 3.70 gears. That Charcoal axle rides traditional leaf springs, which have been augmented with QA-1 shocks and CalTracs traction bars. That clip pushes a Fat Man Fabrications front-half, which wraps QA-1 coil-overs in tubular control arms, a beefy sway bar and a modern crossmember. Fat Man Fabrications supplied the car's power rack-and-pinion steering, which is enhanced with SN97 spindles. Braking is equally class, with red Wilwood calipers, 6-piston up front and 4-piston out back, squeezing drilled and slotted rotors, 13 inches up front and 12 inches out back. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to coated, Mandrel-bent pipes, which align an H-shaped crossover with dual-chamber mufflers. Detail items, like stainless fluid lines, ARP fasteners and an electric Aeromotive fuel pump elevate the shell far beyond simple turntable fodder. And everything rolls on Charcoal REV 5s, which twist 225/45ZR17 Toyo Extensa HP redlines in front of 245/45ZR17 Toyo Extensa HP redlines.

CUSTOM DONE RIGHT

Pop the doors and you'll find a heavily customized interior that celebrates the car's status as a true Pony Package Mustang. Front and center, firm TMI buckets stretch pony-branded covers between large bolsters and 3-point seatbelts. In front of those seats, a sculpted dash frames Classic Instruments telemetry and hardware for Restomod Air conditioning in stylish carbon fiber trim. Below that dash, a custom console founds a billet shifter in front of a 400-watt Kenwood amplifier that bumps Bluetooth-specific audio through a series of Kenwood speakers. Opposite that console, deluxe door panels hang sculpted armrests beneath blacked out handles. Bright red carpet floats pony-themed floor mats beneath blacked out Lokar foot pedals. A tight headliner flows to a fold-down seat, which fronts a custom-upholstered trunk. And in front of the driver, a color-keyed Budnik steering wheel laps a tilting Ididit column.
