Description

In the gearhead world, some words just don't go together. For instance, even though style is a matter of opinion, “beautiful Edsel” usually isn't thrown around too much. “Classic Honda” definitely isn't a combination you hear too often. And “electric street rod” seems about as natural as “vanilla bean chocolate”. But, in case you couldn't tell, your friends at RK Motors Charlotte enjoy unique phrasing as much as we love unique cars. And that's why we're happy to use the words “affordable sports car” to describe this awesome 1970 AMX. A well-optioned semi-survivor that's clean, classy and ready to roll, this classic wraps a correct 390/3-speed drivetrain in choice authenticity and striking aesthetics. And at this price point, it's the perfect way for any enthusiast to grab a cool old car and enjoy every aspect of the hobby!

AMERICA'S ONLY 2-SEAT MUSCLE CAR

Delightfully retro and decidedly cool, this slick little coupe is a take-no-prisoners street warrior that shines on the strip AND at the show. You'll feel like a far-out cat encased in the car's distinctly '70s Bittersweet Orange paintwork, which is taken to the max by a factory Shadow Mask and flashy C-stripes. That fresher-than-factory paint highlights a solid body that shows no signs of significant rust or rot. Not surprisingly, panel gaps are good enough to keep those C-stripes well aligned. And overall, this AMC rolls as a refreshing, factory-correct classic that gains fans everywhere it goes.

Championing what some consider the perfect blend of muscle and sport, the AMX's tidy dimensions belie its outsized presence. Aimed directly at the Chevy Corvette from a performance standpoint, AMC took a much more flamboyant approach when it came to appearance. At the front of the car, a flush, 1970-exclusive grille centers clean “AMX” lettering between large headlights, ornate parking lamps and an original bumper. Behind that bumper, a tall profile is detailed with flush door handles, a color-keyed mirror, ornate fender emblems and textured rocker guards. Opposite those guards, a 'power blister' hood anchors factory-tint glass between original stainless trim and massive “AMX” sails. And behind that badging, 1970-exclusive taillights center an “AMX” branded reverse lamp above a second original bumper.

SMALLER DIMENSIONS, BIGGER POWER

Lift the car's stainless-trimmed hood and you'll find 390 cubic inches of correct V8 that creates a respectable 325 horsepower. At the top of that freshened mill, functional Go Pack ram air induction seats a polished filter on a big 4-barrel carburetor. Below that carb, a cast iron intake feeds 51cc heads that are finished with attractive chrome valve covers. A familiar points distributor sparks 7mm Silicon Suppressor wires. Opposite that distributor, factory exhaust manifolds jettison charred dinos in to rowdy, true-dual pipes. And, in front of it all, pliable hoses swirl coolant around a 7-blade, Go Pack-exclusive fan. This AMX's clean engine bay is a nice combination of form and function, featuring reproduction decals, a snazzy AM washer reservoir and bright blue block skin. And everything, from the car's fenders to its firewall, is coated in conservative Satin Black paint.

AUTHENTIC AND CLEAN

Take one look under this sporty coupe and you'll find a fully sorted chassis that's certainly equipped to back up the car's sinister good looks. Just aft of the big-bore engine, a correct Borg Warner AS6-12 3-speed twists torque to a Go Pack-spec Twin Grip posi-traction rear end. That smooth drivetrain feeds a 1970-exclusive double wishbone front and rear leaf suspension, which is shackled to factory power steering. Cool and confident stops are provided by Safe Command power front disc and rear drum brakes. Above that impressive hardware, solid floors feature a factory-style finish. At the center of those floors, factory dual exhaust hangs bold turbo mufflers in front of polished stainless tips. At the sides of those pipes, stainless-trimmed Magnum 500s spin 215/70R14 Kelly Charger Radials. And a thorough examination of all the car's bushings, lines and hoses ensures it has road going reliability that matches its eyeball-popping curb appeal.

FACTORY FRESH

If you prefer your muscle cars flashy, you'll definitely appreciate this AMC's original Black interior. The car's clamshell perches feature pliable vinyl covers that present very well. In front of those seats, a 1970-exclusive dash hangs clean telemetry, an American Motors radio and Weather Eye climate control in a broad swath of wood applique. Below that dash, a Shift-Command shifter rides a wood-trimmed console. At the base of that console, fade-free carpet is protected by color-keyed floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, pliable door panels sprinkle more wood trim amidst bright chrome hardware. In front of the driver, a speed-drilled steering wheel laps a translucent horn button. And behind the passengers, a clean trunk hides a correct Space saver spare.

Compact, big-displacement muscle cars are as exclusive as they are fun, and every time we put a storied AMC in our showroom, our phones start ringing off the hook. Take a good, long look at the body, drivetrain and interior of this semi-survivor. There's simply no way you could build something this cool and not significantly overshoot our asking price. Don't be that guy who calls late and asks: “Is it really sold?” Pick up the phone and act now!
