By the early 1960s, Pontiac, GM's 'lowly companion marque', was experiencing a huge spike in prestige and popularity. Eventually the GTO, an octane-infused performance package turned brand halo dynamo, became one of the hottest names in the automotive landscape. Today, when you take a close look at classics like this first-class hardtop, it's not difficult to understand why. The car's hot Tri-power 400 optimizes athletic backroad jaunts. Its tough Muncie 4-speed is tame enough to cruise the highway, yet strong enough to own the stoplight. And its impeccable restoration mixes rich Metallic Silver and Black aesthetics with acute attention to detail. If you're in the market for a tailored muscle car that wraps legendary performance in limitless appeal, you're looking at your next collector car!

RESTORATION-FRESH

Purchased as a running original that had rocked the Carolina mountains for close to five decades, this dashing GTO is only 633 miles out of a detailed, ground-up restoration. That reboot, completed by the car's current owner, dresses all-original sheetmetal in custom Metallic Silver 2-stage and tight Black vinyl. And today, for this classic, every minute not spent tearing up the blacktop is a minute spent in climate-controlled storage. At the front of this classy brawler, a flashy, dual-port grille founds a prominent “GTO” script between stacked headlights, a satin arrowhead and a wide bumper that's finished with clear parking lamps. At the top of the car, a broad hood centers a small scoop in front of polished wipers and stainless-trimmed glass that's reflected in a factory driver's mirror. At the sides of the car, vivid GTO emblems add a little sport while polished rockers and traditional door handles add a little function. And out back, a chrome-trimmed valance hangs broad “PONTIAC” lettering between a second satin arrowhead, a fourth “GTO” emblem and a second bumper that's finished with clear reverse lamps.

FOUR HUNDRED

Pop the hood and you'll find 400 cubic inches of pure Pontiac power! At the top of that Turquoise mill, spry Tri-power induction uses a trio of polished breathers to funnel wind into a trio of Rochester 2-barrels. That air/fuel mixture floods a cast Pontiac intake, which feeds cast Pontiac heads that cap a traditional hydraulic cam. At the back of that cam, a factory distributor blasts spark between an MSD coil and loomed Packard Radio TVRS wires. Below those wires, coated Doug's Headers make quick work of spent gases. At the front of those tubes, traditional V-belts spin a Delco alternator above lucid power steering. A modern aluminum radiator and a Delco Moraine brake booster keep the fluids flowing. And the Gloss Black engine bay hosts a roster of impressive details, like stainless fluid lines, polished valve covers and a reliable Optima gel cell battery.

ROW AND GO

Logging only weekend miles since their noble rebirth, this coupe's body-matched floors and Satin Black frame are completely free of significant issues and major defects. The stout 400 commands a traditional Muncie 4-speed, which grinds power to a stainless-capped GM 10-bolt that's finished with a Safe-T-Track posi and buff, 3.55 gears. That drivetrain rides a fully rebuilt suspension that's been upgraded with PMT Fabrication's Pure Muscle control arms. Power-assisted steering provides the turns. Stops are provided by power front disc and rear drum brakes. Polished Pypes exhaust centers an X-shaped crossover in front of rowdy Pypes Violator mufflers. And at the corners, old school Keystone Raiders spin 225/70R14 Hercules H/P 4000s.

CLASSIC BLACK

Between this GTO's boxy doors, you'll find a handsome Black interior that was installed during the car's detailed restoration. Front and center, factory bench and bucket seats wrap bright chrome trim around fresh vinyl covers. Those hides look great behind a Metallic Silver dash that integrates rebuilt telemetry above a vintage pushbutton radio and a small Sunpro temperature gauge. On the floor, new carpet anchors a simple Hurst shifter and a stylish, chrome-trimmed console between GTO-themed floor mats. And in front of the driver, a Custom Sport Steering Wheel spins a faux wood rim around a Teal, Pontiac-branded horn button.
