Ground Up Restored Galaxie 500 Conv 390 V8 Auto Power Steering & Brakes
Ground Up Restored Galaxie 500 Conv 390 V8 Auto Power Steering & Brakes ///
Fully sorted and ready to hit the road, this awesome Ford Galaxie combines the stump pulling torque of its muscle car offspring with the kind of old school Detroit comfort that's classy enough to parade half the neighborhood down Main Street. Today, thanks to a high-quality restoration, the car is not only a reliable and exceptionally roomy place to spend the summer sightseeing, it's also a vintage slice of Americana that'll be welcome at virtually any car show in any town!
BODYWORK/TRIM
This drop-top's clean appearance began with solid sheetmetal that was stripped bare and worked into a clean profile. When that profile exhibited great alignment, buttery Corinthian White 2-stage was capped in white vinyl and buffed to a show worthy shine. At the front of those sleek aesthetics, broad stainless bars hang bright headlights around an ornate Ford crest, a gunsight grille emblem and a polished bumper that's finished with clear parking lamps. At the top of those bars, a clear hood fin leads the eye to chip-free glass, which balances small vent visors above polished stainless frames and bright stainless wipers. At the sides of that blade, red-trimmed spears and mirrored rockers frame polished handles, classy mirrors, bold “390” badging and flowing “Sunliner” scripts. And at the back of the car, a concave valence hangs jet-inspired taillights and a “500” branded fuel filler between a large antenna, a wide “GALAXIE” script, a guarded trunk lock and a second polished bumper.
ENGINE
Befitting the Galaxie's origins as Dearborn's first full-size muscle machine, this flashy convertible draws motivation from 390 cubic inches of Ford FE V8. At the top of that Jet Black block, a painted and decaled air cleaner feeds a big 4-barrel carburetor, which is wedded to a cast iron intake and clean stainless fluid lines. At the front of that plane, a traditional points distributor sequences spark through quality Autolite Radio Resistance plug wires. At the sides of that distributor, silver, “THUNDERBIRD” stamped valve covers reflect correct, cast exhaust manifolds. Cooling is provided by a shrouded and tanked radiator, which cycles water through pliable FoMoCo hoses and old school tower clamps. And, aesthetically, the car's glossy engine bay looks good enough to show off to anyone, with the subdued block perfectly centered in high quality ancillary hardware that includes a bright See Clear washer bag and a tagged Autolite battery topper.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
The big 390's power is transmitted rearward through a tough Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed, which spins a buff 9-inch axle. At the front of the car, factory power steering mixes surprisingly tight turns with modern, responsive feedback. At the center of the car, a free-flowing, true-dual exhaust system gives the big engine deep vocals. And at the corners of the car, power-assisted drums ride behind traditional steelies, ornate wheel covers and meaty 7.50-14 Firestone Deluxe Champion whitewalls.
INTERIOR
One of the best virtues of this Ford is the fact that you can pop its doors, stretch out across its largely original interior and enjoy endless hours of cruising. At the center of the car, Red vinyl seats are the perfect place for you and your family to spend sunny afternoons seeing the sights. In front of those seats, a “Sunliner” branded dash hangs simple gauges between a color-keyed shifter and a vintage AM radio. And the driver sails the blacktop through a polished and painted steering wheel.
