Description

In America, we have a proud tradition of blazing trails. And while our methods sometimes lack refinement, the results are usually unsurpassed. That's exactly the spirit one might glean from Factory Five Racing's GTM Supercar. According to the GTM's overview, it was designed “as a direct challenge to people like Ferrari dealers, who with manicured fingernails and straight faces, charge people a minimum to be on a waiting list, to join an exclusive club of unfriendly people who rarely drive their cars.” Well, if that isn't classic American bravado, I'm not sure what is. In the USA, we don't need carefully crafted appearances to put the automotive world on notice. And with that in mind, it seems appropriate to debut this ferocious, 30-mile GTM. Backing six liters of all-American small block with a composite body, five forward gears, a Corvette suspension and custom leather hides, this blue beast is sure to give any red-blooded car enthusiast a case of white knuckles!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Factory Five Racing has long been applauded for their great composite work, and this GTM is no exception. The car's profile, trimmed on a 5-axis RTP-Fanuc robot, is a hand-laid Vinylester shell that's been laminated to 3/16ths and covered in a .015-inch gel coat. That gel lays excellent groundwork for wet looking 2-stage, which, while it appears blue, is officially called BMW Carbon Black Metallic. The car's taut profile, produced in 2006 and titled upon its 2011 inspection, was massaged and sprayed by Anthony Kutas of Dents Charlotte. And, since debuting from its $156K custom build in late 2015, this coupe has traversed a scant 30 miles.

ENGINE

Nothing is more American than a spry Chevy small block. Lift the car's sculpted deck and you'll find the forerunner to virtually all the technology still featured in Chevrolet sports cars: GM's potent Gen IV LS2. The rowdy mill utilizes 364 cubic inches to twist buff 10.9 to 1 compression into an even 400 horsepower and 400 lb./ft. of Oak-shaking torque. And despite consistently delivering track-blistering, low-end performance, it revs to 6,500 RPM and can drive like a commuter car! Up top, a custom shroud features tailored branding. Out back, beefy air tubes feed a factory throttle body that's bolted to a composite GM intake. At the sides of the block, familiar 243 heads flood custom Kooks headers, which inflate a custom X-pipe, coated cats and polished stainless tips. Cooling comes courtesy of a big aluminum radiator, which centers spry puller fans amid braided piping. And, aesthetically, the aluminum V8 looks fantastic seated in top notch hardware and smooth, satin framing.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

The bottom of this GTM is as simple as it is technical, with the car's entire undercarriage, save for its engine and transmission, fortified by aerodynamic belly pans. The chassis is a powder-coated space frame that positively contributes to a dainty 2,435-pound curb weight. Turns come courtesy of a manual steering rack, which leads a fifth-generation Corvette suspension that's balanced, weight-tuned, fitted with anti-roll bars and finished with custom-tuned Genesis coil-overs. Stops come courtesy of sixth-generation Corvette Z06 binders, which clamp a quartet of drilled rotors. Behind the lightweight engine, a Porsche G50 transaxle employs a limited-slip differential and custom ratios to achieve a 3.44 final drive. All that proven track prowess rolls on 1-piece CCW C2Ks, which twist 245/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sports in front of 335/30ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sports. And the driving experience is greatly aided by a whole roster of precision parts that includes an Aeromotive fuel pump, custom, 22-gallon fuel tanks and a RamLiftPro hydraulic lift system.

INTERIOR

Naturally, this custom's Caressa Platinum interior is every bit as nice as its lightweight shell. Penned by Royal Oak, Michigan's Pfaff Designs, and installed by Steve Kurzman of Charlotte's The Custom Stitching Company, the clean cockpit features an inviting collection of alcantara and Italian Leather surfacing. Front and center, Factory Five Racing sport seats wear modern, 3-point shoulder harnesses. In front of those seats, a wrapped dash hangs crisp Porsche 997 telemetry, modified by Classic Instruments, beside Pioneer double-din audio, which sequences navigation and satellite radio through Hybrid Audio subs, an Arc Audio amp and Hybrid Audio speakers. At the bottom of the car, Bentley wool carpet, shielded by custom mats, founds a sculpted console under a short shifter, Vintage Air Gen IV climate control and pushbutton ignition. In front of the driver, a leather-wrapped Momo steering wheel laps Escort Passport front/rear radar detection, which rides a tilting column. And everyone stays safe thanks to an integrated, 6-point roll cage.
