Description

While a lot of collectors are busy chasing 'Cudas and Road Runners, they're quick to overlook the Plymouth GTX. Available with the same ground-pounding big blocks as its brothers, the GTX was a refined alternative for the guy who wanted serious performance wrapped in line-topping class. This awesome GTX, a correctly restored car that's still equipped with original Super Commando power, is the kind of classic that'll show, and go, just as well as its esteemed brethren. And what's better: it's something decidedly unique in the world of big block MoPars. So, if you're ready to take the road less traveled, have a look at this classically handsome Plymouth!

IVY GREEN METALLIC FOR THE WIN

This slick B-Body's 2012 nut-and-bolt restoration began with a mostly rust-free body that benefitted from a fresh set of quarter panels. Once those panels were correctly aligned, everything was carefully massaged to better-than-new condition. And that lovingly prepped canvas was shot, both inside and out, in correct Ivy Green Metallic 2-stage that's been highlighted with factory war paint.

Every bit of this coupe's classy ornamentation is extremely clean, lending excellent detail to the aforementioned pigment. At the front of the car, a black honeycomb grille hangs a bold “GTX” script between four halogen headlights, crystal clear parking lamps and a guarded bumper. Behind that grille, a correct Fresh Air Hood centers a wind-gulping scoop in front of chip-free glass that's framed in bright stainless trim. Below that glass, a slab-sided profile hangs stylish scoops and aggressive “GTX” emblems between dent-free wheel lips, a bright chrome mirror and old school door handles. And at the back of the car, a striking black valence founds crystal clear tail lamps above a wide “PLYMOUTH” script, a second chrome bumper and spotless stainless exhaust tips.

ORIGINAL MOPAR POWER

Hoist the car's striped and decaled hood and you'll find an original, 440 cubic inch RB V8 that hangs a correct 2536430 casting number between a November 12th, 1969 casting date and a matching 185367 partial VIN. More popular than Chrysler's famed Hemi, and almost as feared as Plymouth's 440 6 BBL, this storied Super Commando has been restored to offer an exceptional combination of speed and civility. Functional ram air induction feeds oxygen to a correctly decaled air cleaner and a big Carter 4-barrel, which is bolted to a glossy, Hemi Orange intake. At the front of that carb, a familiar points distributor sequences fire through Belden Premium 7mm Max Protection cables. At the sides of those wires, Hemi Orange valve covers perfectly contrast old school exhaust manifolds. Cooling is provided by a correct heavy duty radiator that's cinched to pliable hoses via simple squeeze clamps. Power is provided by a tagged MoPar battery. And aesthetically, the engine bay looks great, from its correct voltage regulator and glossy green fenders all the way to its old school washer reservoir and fully restored brake booster.

DELIGHTFULLY OVER-RESTORED

Given this Plymouth's rich paint and clean engine bay, great looks must've been the mantra of its restoration. Check our undercarriage photos and you'll find a fully restored chassis that backs a roster of tough componentry with solid, body-matched floors. Behind the 440, a correct A833 4-speed twists power to a tough Dana 60 that's fitted with a posi-traction differential and stout, 3.54 gears. Below that proven drivetrain, a familiar front torsion bar and rear leaf suspension has been completely rebuilt to factory specifications. Stops are provided by power front disc and rear drum brakes. Turns come courtesy of factory power steering. Exhaust exits through free-flowing, 2.5-inch pipes, which filter cooked dinosaurs through throaty turbo mufflers. And power meets the pavement through chromed Magnum 500s, which spin F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sport redlines.

LEGENDARY GREEN

In the age of constant connectivity and pending autonomy, there's really nothing better than sliding behind the wheel of simplistic '60s muscle. Open the car's solid doors and you'll find a trio of green-trimmed seats that combine supportive comfort with minimalist style. In front of the driver, a retro steering wheel laps rebuilt Rallye gauges and a vintage Chrysler Solid State radio. At the sides of that wood-trimmed dash, weather-free door panels melt into fade-free carpet. At the center of that carpet, a wood-trimmed console traces a Hurst Pistol Grip Shifter. And behind that Legendary cockpit, a dressed and decaled trunk features a correct jack and full-size spare tire.
