NCRS Top Flight Body Off Restored Corvette Coupe 427ci V8 4-spd A/C Side Pipes
If you've been watching second-generation Corvette prices lately, you know that even the small block cars are becoming hot collectibles. Let's face it, at this point, ANY C2 will turn heads and provide a nice return. But in the realm of hardcore collectors, legendary big block cars are still the crème of the crop. This sculpted Sting Ray coupe is a national award-winning classic that wraps timeless red and black aesthetics around a numbers-matching 4-speed and a numbers-matching 427. And if you're looking to storm the collector car hobby with guaranteed pedigree, it's an easy ride to the front of the pack!
LITTLE RED CORVETTE
Assembled in St. Louis, Missouri in February of 1966, this slick C2 is the kind of classic that you can look at and virtually sense top-notch caretaking. As you likely deduced from our high-resolution photography, that caretaking involved a detailed, body-off restoration. That ground-up reboot, documented over the course of eight years, began with solid, original fiberglass that was fully stripped, lovingly sanded and gratuitously sprayed in correct Rally Red 2-stage. With that pigment applied, the car's doors and lids were carefully adjusted to ensure good fit and finish. And vibrant factory trim was affixed under factory-tint glass and a correct big block hood to ardently accentuate Bill Mitchell's razor-sharp style lines.
MAGIC NUMBERS
Tilt the hood and you'll find 427 cubic inches of numbers-matching big block that frames a correct “IL” suffix stamp and matching 113377 partial VIN in a high performance 3869942 casting number and a January (A) 21st (21), 1966 (6) casting date. According to the factory, that legendary mill, fully stripped and fully rebuilt during the detailed restoration, churns out an impressive 390 horsepower. At the top of the Chevy Orange block, a proven Holley carburetor rides between a chrome, correctly decaled air cleaner and fresh stainless fuel lines. Below that carb, a hot Holley intake floats between correct heads, and stamped and color-keyed valve covers. When the juice hits the cylinders, stainless-clad ignition sparks fresh, stainless-sleeved wires while a factory-spec cam pushes spent gases through fully restored exhaust manifolds. Cooling for that fire is provided by a shrouded radiator, which hangs in front of pliable hoses and reproduction tower clamps. And, aesthetically, this Sting Ray's tidy engine compartment is exceptionally well done, framing items like a correct master cylinder, a rebuilt Delco alternator and an old school Frigidaire AC compressor in clean, Satin Black surfacing.
FOUR ON THE FLOOR
Fully disassembled during the car's freshening, this Corvette's fully restored chassis frames fresh, weather-free floor tubs. Behind the awesome big block, a tough Muncie 4-speed sports a familiar 3885010 casting number, a Muncie (P) assembled on February (02) 2nd (02), 1966 build stamp and a matching 113377 partial VIN. That tough transmission twists a correct transverse leaf axle, which spins a posi-traction differential around sporty, highway-friendly gears. That drivetrain rolls on a familiar F41 Sport Suspension, which mixes optional power steering with power-assisted discs. A killer soundtrack is provided by rowdy side-pipes. And at the corners of the floor, 205/75R15 Firestone Supreme Si whitewalls lap attractive knock-off styled Turbine wheels.
SETTING THE STANDARD
Check between this C2's doors and you'll find a correct Standard Interior that's been completely restored. Tight bucket seats frame a thin console that's equipped with a correct chrome shifter. In front of that shifter, a monochromatic dash hangs rebuilt telemetry over optional air conditioning and an optional Delco AM/FM radio. In front of the driver, a sweet Teakwood steering wheel laps a telescopic steering column. And fresh carpet parallels a tight headliner in a feeble attempt to shield occupants from the aural wrath of the buff 427!
