Description

The automotive scene can be a fickle place. Trends come, go, fizzle and sometimes even cycle back under the guise of “retro”. While many builders strive to create cars that offer the flavor of the day, others use calculated observation to transform premier classics into timeless hot rods. This clean 210 features plenty of modern must-haves, like air conditioning, showy upholstery and a hidden audio system. But items like upgraded brakes, a buff Chevrolet big block and a Borg Warner 4-speed transmission certainly underscore the fact that the car marches to its own beat. So, if you're looking for a razor-sharp resto-mod that's ready to attract big crowds and big trophies, here it is!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Sure, PPG ChromaPremier wasn't in Chevy's guns back in 1956, but this awesome 210's slick combination of Matador Red and Adobe Beige paint certainly looks the part. Thanks to their killer curves, members of the Bel Air family really lend themselves to glossy 2-stage. And this sedan's rich pigment works well with fresh chrome and new glass to reflect clean and timeless aesthetics. The car's bodywork, solid metal that was married to new floors and new rockers, presents great, with straight panels and even gaps framing doors that snap closed with precision. Part of a rotisserie restoration that wrapped in the summer of 2017, that precision shows in a way that'll put most traditional pavement pounders to shame. Nothing has been chopped, channeled or frenched, which is always a smart choice on tri-fives. And, by allowing the car's mostly original body to speak for itself, the builders created a solid, no-gimmick classic that dazzles through merit and execution.

Traveling roughly 100 test miles since it rolled out of the paint booth, this bowtie's finishing pieces are essentially factory-spec. At the front of the car, a guarded bumper protects modern headlights, clear parking lamps and a polished grille. At the top of that grille, a Chevrolet-branded hood bends around a familiar jetbird topper, leading the eye to fresh glass that's founded in polished frames and opposing wipers. At the base of that glass, factory mirrors reflect traditional door handles, which complement monochromatic speed spears and classy quarter scripts. And at the back of the car, a second guarded bumper frames traditional tail lamps and a second Chevrolet crest.

ENGINE

Pop the hood and you'll find 402 cubic inches of buff Chevrolet big block that's been professionally rebuilt by SS Custom Engines of Pleasant Hills, Iowa. At the top of the Chevy Orange mill, trick cowl plenum induction floats colorful decals above a Quadrajet carburetor, which is bolted to a traditional, cast iron intake. That intake feeds factory Chevrolet heads, which float Chevy Orange valve covers above coated, long-tube headers. At the back of those heads, a traditional points distributor sequences spark through Ultima Select silicone suppression cables. At the front of those cables, painted pulleys spin a modern alternator opposite a coated AC compressor. Cooling comes courtesy of a beefy radiator, which rides a factory core support. And, aesthetically, the car's Satin Black engine bay is exceptionally clean.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Combining a factory frame with choice Performance Online suspension components, this 210 provides a ride that's both comfortable and durable. At the center of that Satin Black skeleton, a Borg Warner T10 4-speed funnels torque to a rebuilt GM axle that's finished with 3.08 gears and a posi-traction differential. Stops come courtesy of a CPP power disc conversion, which utilizes a fresh booster to cinch two calipers in front of two drums. Spent gases can either exit through electric cutouts, or progress through an x-shaped crossover that fronts throaty turbo mufflers. And all that mechanical goodness rolls on restored ET Mags, which spin 205/75R14 Kumho Touring A/S in front of 255/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.

INTERIOR

Open this sedan's doors and you'll find a gorgeous vinyl cockpit that was installed by Tempe, Arizona's Ciadella Interiors. Top dead center, a 2-tone dash founds rebuilt telemetry beside controls for the car's modern air conditioning and a factory radio delete. Beneath that dash, a small shifter leads plush bench seats, which float on bright carpet that's protected by tri-five-themed floor mats. In front of the driver, a 1960 Impala steering wheel laps a retro Sun Super Tach. And the tunes keep bumpin' thanks to remote-controlled Custom Autosound audio that, along with a duo of accessory gauges, lives in the car's factory glovebox.
