Frame Off Restored GTO Judge Restomod 461ci Pontiac Stroker V8 5 speed A/C
The first thing that popped in to our heads when we laid eyes on this well-built GTO was: “Some cars just drip presence.” Now, that's all well and good unless 'initial draw' doesn't equal 'ultimate impression'. For a car to be truly desirable, that presence must be founded on quality mechanicals. Well, we can certainly attest that this real-deal Judge definitely has the merit to back up its presence thanks to a buff 461 V8, a tough Tremec 5-speed and a roster of updated ancillaries that includes names like, FiTech, TMI and Ridler. So, without further ado, here's our latest world-class resto-mod!
BODYWORK/TRIM
A factory Carousel Red Ram Air III Judge that began life in sunny California, this GTO's classic good looks originated in the mind of engineer John Z. DeLorean. But it was a detailed rotisserie restoration that ensured its present appearance is top-notch in virtually every way. The restorer kicked off a 2-year, ground-up rebuild that involved stripping the body bare and restoring the original Endura nose. That stripped and solid profile was correctly re-sealed in glossy PPG 2-stage paint. This razor-sharp Poncho made its debut as a first-class head turner that's fresh, composed and ready for prime time!
At the front of the car's flashy pigment, a stainless-trimmed dual-port grille hangs a prominent “G T O” badge and requisite T3 headlights above ornate parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a black-trimmed Ram Air Hood founds a body-matched tachometer in front of stainless-trimmed glass that's centered between a polished antenna and polished driver's mirror. At the sides of that hood, bright “G T O” emblems, brilliant Judge stripes and GTO-themed marker lamps perfectly complement stainless wheel frames, stainless rocker guards and polished door handles. And at the back of the car, a stainless-trimmed decklid hangs a correct wing and fourth “G T O” script over clean taillights, a body-width bumper and polished exhaust tips.
ENGINE
Hoist the hood and you'll find a date-correct Pontiac 400 V8 that's been bored and stroked to a whopping 461 cubic inches! At the top of that tough Turquoise terror, functional ram air induction funnels wind through FiTech Go EFI 4 fuel injection. That throttle body rides a lightweight Edelbrock intake, which feeds hot aluminum Edelbrock Performer heads that cap an Erson 7/4 swap roller cam. Those heads are framed by coated Doug's headers and loomed MSD Super Conductor plug wires, which are sequenced to a Pertronix Flame-Thrower distributor. Opposite that distributor, CVF Racing serpentine components spin modern power steering and modern air conditioning behind a chrome puller fan. In front of that fan, a chrome support tops a trusty aluminum radiator. Details like polished breathers, braided fluid lines, Proform valve covers and a polished expansion tank trim out show worthy aesthetics. And all that prized hardware adds up to roughly 475 horsepower!
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Logging few miles since the car's ground-up restoration, this goat's stripped and restored undercarriage is show worthy. The stout block commands a new Tremec TKO600 5-speed. That gearbox powers a rebuilt 10-bolt axle, which spins a posi-trac differential around fresh, 3.55 gears that were sourced from USA Standard. That drivetrain rides a familiar F41 Sport Suspension, which has been upgraded with BMR lowering springs and aftermarket control arms. At the corners of that suspension, Signature Big Brake calipers clamp drilled and slotted rotors. At the center of the car's original floors, a throaty Pypes exhaust system hangs an X-shaped crossover in front of aggressive Street Pro mufflers. And everything rolls on Polished Ridler 645 wheels, which spin 225/45ZR18 Sumitomo HTR ZIIIs in front of 275/35ZR20 Sumitomo HTR ZIIIs.
INTERIOR
Swing the doors and you'll find a clean leather interior that feels like the perfect place to spend a warm summer evening. Front and center, orange-stitched TMI bucket seats lead an orange-stitched, TMI-upholstered rear seat. The 461's vitals are displayed by crisp, white-face gauges, which ride next to modern air conditioning and a RetroSound Hermosa head unit that pipes Bluetooth audio through Kicker speakers. Like-new carpet anchors a chrome Hurst shifter behind stainless-trimmed foot pedals. At the sides of the car, pliable door panels mix manual hardware with orange-trimmed emblems. The driver spins a wood-rimmed Grant steering wheel. And the passengers store essentials in a custom-upholstered trunk.
