Ground Up Built Eleanor Mustang Fastback 390 V8 Automatic 9in A/C
Over the past few years, we've certainly seen some nice resto-mods. But this 1968 Mustang, with its massaged 390 and seductive Eleanor styling, is definitely one of the coolest! Fully sorted and ready to hit the road, this awesome Ford combines the stump-pulling power of Dearborn's best muscle cars with vintage Detroit style that's classy enough to lead a parade. And today, thanks to meticulous restoration, not only is it a reliable and exceptionally comfy place to spend a sightseeing summer, it's also an authentic piece of Americana that'll be welcomed at virtually any car show in any town. If you're looking for a choice classic that's as alluring as it is powerful, who says you need a high maintenance original? This awesome pony will look just as cool rolling down the road, show just as well at the local drive-in and provide just as many miles of carefree cruising!
RED WITH A DASH OF SILVER
A slick '60s fastback that features an impressively straight body, this Mustang benefitted from a detailed, ground-up restoration that supplemented solid sheetmetal with an aggressive Eleanor kit. However, instead of donning the traditional gray and black pigment of everyone's favorite movie Ford, this pony stretched vibrant red 2-stage paint under slick silver stripes. And today, the car rolls as one head-turning thoroughbred that's right at home reflecting a summertime cruise-in!
Back in the day, Dearborn designers made sure every year of the first-generation Mustang had plenty of visual sizzle. And in the 21st century, it doesn't get much better than this Ford's racy combination clean factory accents and Shelby-inspired trim. At the front of the car, billet grilles hang prominent PIAA fog lamps between PIAA driving lamps and a custom valance that's fashioned around H4 headlights. Below those lights, an Eleanor-style bumper bends aggressive ground effects around sculpted, Shelby-branded fenders that frame a pinned, Eleanor-style hood. Behind that hood, stainless-trimmed glass reflects polished, bullet-style mirrors, Shelby-style pillar scoops and a polished, Monza-style fuel filler. Beneath those scoops, functional quarter ducts top extended rockers and requisite Eleanor quarter flares. And behind those flares, an extended, Shelby-style decklid joins a lightweight bumper to cage angled fender caps, a silver Shelby valance and small reverse lamps.
PROFESSIONALLY REBUILT 390
Hoist the lightweight hood and you'll find 390 cubic inches of raucous Ford power. At the top of the buff engine, a classy Cobra air cleaner props a reusable filter element above a big Holley 4-barrel that's wired with polished fluid lines and an electric choke. Beneath that juice box, a coated Edelbrock Performer intake reflects attractive Edelbrock valve covers that are capped with a polished Edelbrock breather. At the front of those covers, an MSD Blaster 2 coil jolts an MSD Pro-Billet distributor, which sequences spark through loomed MSD Super Conductor plug wires. Old school manifolds make quick work of spent gases. Cooling comes courtesy of a lightweight aluminum radiator and a high-capacity water pump. Pliable V-belts spin a polished alternator opposite a modern AC compressor. There's a reliable Optima battery that's accompanied by a built-in tender. And you'll be excited to know that first-rate detailing, like aftermarket bracing, a KRC power steering reservoir and a high capacity oil pan, rounds out a very impressive engine display.
PUTTING THE RESTO IN RESTO-MOD
Take a look under this Mustang and you'll find solid floors that are highlighted by smooth red 2-stage paint and a roster of choice hardware. Behind the iron 390, a smooth C6 3-speed automatic transmission spins a 9-inch Ford axle that's packed with moderate, 3.00 gears. That drivetrain rolls on a upgraded suspension that's finished with tubular control arms, an upgraded sway bar and CalTracs-style traction bars. Turns are easy thanks to power rack-and-pinion steering. At the corners of the car, power-assisted calipers clamp a quartet of drilled and slotted rotors. Polished exhaust fills polished Magnaflow mufflers, which bark through side-exit tips. And power meets the pavement through Halibrand-style wheels, which spin 245/45ZR17 Continental Extreme Contacts in front of 255/45ZR17 Continental Extreme Contacts.
TRADITIONAL WITH A FEW TWISTS
Swing the doors and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that's been updated with a perfect amount of style and convenience. Front and center, TMI-branded buckets boast big bolsters under a thick roll bar that's strung with 3-point shoulder belts. A factory-spec dash hangs upgraded audio over a Sunpro water gauge, a Sunpro Super Tach II and Cobra-themed foot pedals. Fresh carpet floats Mustang-themed floor mats around a polished fire extinguisher and an attractive B&M QuickSilver shifter. The driver carves curves through a polished and wood-rimmed steering wheel. And behind the passengers, a carpeted trunk displays a faux nitrous bottle beneath a Pioneer CD changer.
When it comes to maximizing the amount of metal your money buys, you simply can't go wrong with a purpose-built pony car. Thanks to its thorough restoration, this legendary Ford is a great driving piece that's fun, historic AND reliable. If you're looking for a stylish classic that commands respect on both the boulevard and the show field, this red-hot Mustang is just your style!
