Description

The original ZL1 Camaro is one of the most coveted cars of General Motors' 111-year history. Its fire breathing 427 is truly the stuff of hot rodding legend. When Chevrolet announced that they would build a modernized version of that famed F-Body on their new Zeta platform, enthusiasts across the nation immediately began spec'ing their dream cars. By the time SEMA 2011 rolled around, it was clear that many major North American shops had spent the year dreaming as well, creating their own visions of what the hottest, newest Camaro should be. And while there was no shortage of panther cars at SEMA, none took performance as seriously as this 2011 Camaro SS!

SETTING THE STAGE

Commissioned by Source Interlink, who you may know better as the parent company of entities like Super Chevy, Hot Rod, Automobile and Motor Trend, this Chevy is the product of many industry titans. The list includes the GM Performance Division, Thomson Automotive and Pedders Suspension, just to name a few. After its SEMA debut, the car was taken to Lingenfelter Performance Engineering for a full shake down, and the end result was a brand new Camaro that packed over 800 fully streetable horsepower. There are still few fifth-generation Camaros that can touch this car in a quarter mile, and absolutely zero with this kind of provenance. If you've been eyeing a modern Camaro as an investment, they simply don't get better than this.

Like many of our low-mileage, factory-fresh pieces, this car presents as new in every conceivable way. Glossy Summit White paint is accented by Inferno Orange racing stripes. An optional Rally Sport Appearance Package, denoted by red “SS” emblems, adds an attractive deck spoiler, halo HIDs and tweaked taillights. Tasteful pace car lettering, commemorating the 100th Indianapolis 500, serves as a familiar throwback to the glory days of the first-generation Camaro. And the addition of a few factory “ZL1” badges hint at the car's lofty pedigree.

SETTING THE PACE

It wasn't that long ago when a reliable, 500 horsepower street engine was a big deal. These days, 500 horsepower is little more than a respectable baseline. Under the hood of this Camaro lies one of GM's potent LS7 V8s -- a whopping 7.0 liters of small block that was built by Thomson Automotive and breathed on by the team at Lingenfelter. All that verbiage translates to over 800 pavement thumping horsepower that's wrapped in a truly street friendly package. Despite the level of tech used in modern engine building, the essentials remain the same. An upgraded cam, a forged steel crank, forged I-beam rods and forged aluminum pistons form the basis of this beast. At the sides, upgraded LS9 heads hide under GM coil packs. Up top, an LS9 TVS positive-displacement blower, complete with an integrated liquid-to-air charge cooler, sucks oxygen through a 90mm throttle body. Everything stays cool thanks to a massive aluminum radiator that's rated to 1,000 horsepower. Factory exhaust manifolds were surprisingly efficient, so they were left in place. Aftermarket mufflers provide a rich tone without being overly loud. And a Lingenfelter shock tower brace combines a little form with a lot of function.

SETTING THE STANDARD

The torque-rich LS7 spins a slick-shifting Rockland Standard Gear TranZilla 6-speed that's rated for over 1,200 horsepower. From there, power is transferred through a Lingenfelter dual-friction clutch to a balanced, aircraft-grade driveshaft that's rated for 1,500 horsepower. And, from there, power flows into a NASCAR-style limited-slip axle that's packed with 3.73 gears. That driveline rides a Nürburgring tested independent performance suspension that's fitted with a Pedders Pace Car Package. Variable-ratio, speed-sensitive power steering and Super Sport-specific Brembo discs, supplemented with ABS and electronic brake distribution, ensure this is the best handling Camaro to date. GM's Stabilitrak traction and stability control system helps a 6-speed Camaro SS-exclusive launch control system keep the power as safe and manageable as possible. And everything rolls on chromed American Racing wheels, which spin 245/40ZR20 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 305/35R20 Nitto NT555R Extreme Drags.

SETTING THE SPACE

Inside the car, everything appears factory new with virtually no traces of wear. The heated and power adjustable seats wear attractive Inferno Orange leather and, when combined with the car's Inferno Orange door coves, dash accents and stitching, really set off an otherwise serious cockpit. An unblemished dash frames silver-trimmed Camaro gauges that come complete with a standard Driver Information Center. A 9-speaker Boston Acoustics sound system includes a CD player, an MP3 input jack and full satellite capability. In the console, optional 4-pack gauges front a short shifter that's finished with a leather knob and Inferno Orange stitching. Pliable door panels stack controls for heated, power-adjustable mirrors on buttons for power door locks and power windows. And in front of the driver, a tilting and telescoping steering wheel balances buttons for the car's Bluetooth connectivity opposite factory cruise control.

We've featured rare versions of fifth-generation Camaros before, but this is a true 1 of 1 car. With a pristine shell, a capable chassis and one asphalt destroying Lingenfelter-tuned powerplant, this is the modern Camaro every collector wants. Don't miss your chance to own a piece of automotive history!
