When it comes to 'old school cool', it doesn't get much better than a vintage Jeep. Comfortably accommodating four passengers, and boasting the ability to conquer almost any terrain, these fabled off-roaders combine the best characteristics of a vintage truck with the straight up utility of a military-spec runabout. LEGENDARY BLACK AND GOLD

Nearly every iconic Jeep has a following, but the legendary CJ is arguably the most sought after 4x4 of all time. Introduced in 1954 as a more civilian-friendly unit, the CJ-5 was billed as “the universal Jeep” that could serve as “the world's most useful vehicle”. This 1980 model wraps all that worldly swagger in a detailed, ground-up restoration that, according to its professional restorer, is founded on solid, one-owner sheetmetal. At the front of the SUVs rich 2-stage paint, a polished bumper protects a gold-lined grille that's finished with stainless-trimmed headlights and clear parking lamps. Behind those torches, an iconic Golden Eagle hood, secured by polished lanyards, leads the eye to a folding windshield that's propped between satin wipers, a factory antenna and painted mirrors. Those mirrors reflect a door less profile, which centers polished rockers between monochromatic pipes, monochromatic flares, tight Bestop canvas and small Levi's decals. And at the back of this gold-lined brute, factory taillights illuminate polished bumperettes, small Jeep emblems and a full-size spare tire.

Hoist the hood and you'll find 304 cubic inches of proven AMC V8 power that, thanks to a comprehensive rebuild, sports a professional .030 overbore. At the top of that mill, a polished air cleaner funnels oxygen through a big Holley 4-barrel carburetor to a lightweight Edelbrock aluminum intake. That intake feeds a blue block, which spins mild internals beneath cast iron heads, color-keyed valve covers and a stainless-capped oil tube. In front of that tube, loomed 7mm Suppression Cables, snapped to a quality points distributor, trace long headers. And in front of those tubes, a factory radiator keeps an eye on temps.

TOUGH AS NAILS

Crawling under this rig reveals a sturdy chassis that, given this CJ's fresh restoration, is clean and 100% weather-free. Power meets the pavement through a reliable 4-speed transmission, which rides between a professionally rebuilt transfer case and professionally rebuilt 10 and 12-bolt axles. That drivetrain rolls on a powder-coated frame that's stretched over factory springs and spry Rancho shocks. That frame is stopped by a traditional combination of disc and drum brakes. Exhaust flows through throaty side pipes. And at the corners of the floor, gold steelies twist a quartet of 31x10.50R15 BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/As around quality Warn hubs.

ALL BUTTONED UP

Inside this classic you'll find an airy cockpit that's clean, tight and squared away thanks to Kirk's Kustom Upholstery of Corryton, Tennessee. $800 worth of familiar Levi's buttons adorns bucket seat interior that provide enough comfort for four adults. Front and center, a Jeep-branded dash frames rebuilt factory telemetry. Clean carpet traces factory shifters. The driver spins a tilting Jeep steering wheel. And everyone stays safe thanks to a Bestop-padded roll bar.
