Description

This year Chevrolet asked its fans to vote for the 'ultimate' Chevy to help celebrate its centennial. Naturally, the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport jumped out to an early lead and even though votes are still being counted, it seems the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport will face the 1969 Camaro in a final showdown for “Best Chevy of All Time”. This frame up restored 1970 Chevelle SS 454 is a fully documented, numbers matching LS5 big block car that is a shining example of what might be the most beloved Chevrolet ever made.

The recipient of a restoration completed in 2004, this Chevelle was expertly finished in its original GM code 75 75 Cranberry Red and correct black Super Sport stripes for a look that's as hot as the Atlanta asphalt at the car's original assembly plant. No expense was spared in the frame off restoration which included new high quality quarter panels that show better than assembly line new. Once the quarters were installed, the basecoat, clearcoat paint was applied and the entire car was laboriously color sanded and buffed until the finish was smooth and ripple-free. Every single nook and crevice was faithfully prepped and finished to better-than-new standards which means the door jambs and trunk all wear a coat of brilliant code 75 75 that perfectly matches the quality of the body. Up front, a full chrome bumper and correct T3 headlights with stainless surrounds glitter in the sunlight. The timeless '70 Chevelle grille looks great, is trimmed in stainless and features a correct “Chevelle” emblem below a centered white “SS” emblem. Factory hood pins combine with a functional cowl induction hood, with correct emblems, to give the car an aggressive, race-ready appearance. On the profiles of the car, great looking factory optioned drip rails and factory optioned window frame moldings complement well maintained stainless around new front and rear windows. Dual chrome side mirrors function great above stainless wheel well moldings and chrome GM door handles. Behind the front fenders, white “SS” emblems sit above red “454” emblems to let everyone know just how serious this car is. Out back, a full bumper frames up a nice black Super Sport insert and a pair of new tail light lenses. Below the bumper, correct stainless exhaust tips sit flush with the body and above the bumper a subtle “Chevelle by Chevrolet” emblem occupies the passenger's side of the trunk lid. No corners were cut on the aesthetics of this restoration; everything is correct and show quality in appearance.

Power comes from the cars original, numbers matching LS5 454 engine that produces a very impressive 360 horsepower while being smooth and reliable enough to offer various accessory options, such as power steering, which is found on this car. Chevrolet actually produced fewer LS5 engines than LS6s, making this SS454 one of the more rare cars built in 1970. The LS5 in this Chevelle is topped by a correct cowl induction air cleaner that feeds a correct Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor. The block is bathed in brilliant Chevy Orange from its intake manifold to its oil pan and really stands out in the tightly packed satin black engine bay. The car's original cast iron exhaust manifolds dump gases into a correct factory replacement dual exhaust system complete with correct resonators. All big block SS Chevelles received chrome-plated valve covers, and the details on this one are correct including reproduction GM stamped hoses, hose clamps and correct Packard wires that run from a correct distributor. Correct decals have been used throughout, from the “454 Turbo-Jet 360 HP” decal on the air cleaner lid to the Tonawanda sticker on the passenger's side valve cover. All belts and hoses are brand new and this car is so close to showroom status that you'll even find the cars original low washer fluid monitor on top of the washer fluid container.

The theme of “better than” new also extends underneath the car to the floors and highly detailed chassis. A correct Turbo-hydramatic 400 3-speed automatic sends power from the RQ code 454 block to a 12-bolt limited slip rear end with easy driving 3.31 gears. The cars suspension is a factory correct double A-arm front set up with power steering bolted on and a triangulated 4 link set up in the rear with correct coil springs a correct sway bar and correct spiral shocks. The power front disc, rear drum brake system has been fully rebuilt from its rotors to its lines and the dual exhaust system I mentioned earlier is a factory replacement with correct resonators and correct stainless tips mounted at the back of the car. In front of those stainless tips, there's a new stainless gas tank equipped with new stainless fuel lines. The cars frame, free of any major damage, is painted black to match the cars good looking black floor boards and in keeping with the 454 up top, much attention has been paid to making sure all the correct marks and tags are in place on the driveline and suspension. At each corner, correctly painted Super Sport wheels wear F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires that look exactly right in the Chevelles big wheel wells.

Inside, the car has been restored with a correct GM code 788 red strato interior. You might notice the black steering column and black seatbelts thinking they were hasty bolt-ins to finish an otherwise pristine Chevelle. However, a quick glance at the build sheet confirms that these items were original equipment from the factory. The seats were rebuilt with fresh foam and new seat covers, and show no wear at all. Between the buckets, the red console looks great with silver and black accents highlighting a horseshow shifter that's hooked to the TH400. In front of you, an excellent looking dash houses gauges that have been fully rebuilt and include a correct 7000 RPM tachometer and factory optioned clock. Below the black gauge bin, in the center of the dash, is an original equipment AM/FM radio and mounted on the lower left side of the dash, a correct low windshield washer indicator is a cool touch. Red carpet looks new and complements chrome trimmed door panels with correct black Super Sport emblems that visually pop. And, above the correct black Super Sport steering wheel, the rearview mirror incorporates a trick factory optioned map light. Everything in this interior from the chrome kick panel vent handles to the tight headliner looks like a million bucks.

Documentation for this car includes an original General Motors build sheet, recent maintenance receipts, a reproduction owner's manual and dealer marketing material.

This documented, numbers matching 1970 Chevelle Super Sport is an iconic car with its original engine and a rare interior color combination. For many, it IS the best Chevy of all time. And while the LS6 gets all the glory, if you actually want to drive and enjoy your Chevelle, the LS5 is the one to get. It has plenty of power, a great sound, is nicely finished, and is exactly the kind of car we all wish we could own. Here's your chance. Call today!
