By now, we all probably know the exceptional combination of performance and approachability that defines the Corvette brand. Introduced way back in 1953 as America's first sports car, the marque has spent the better part of the last 70 years dominating boulevards and chicanes alike. So then, what is the quintessential blend of Corvette cruising and Corvette bruising? Well, from a standpoint of all-around performance and collectability, this Centennial Edition Grand Sport is a solid bet. One of only 1,040 Grand Sports built to celebrate the first 100 years of the Chevrolet Motor Division, it wraps Le Mans-inspired athleticism in the sensory allure of timeless red and black aesthetics. And if you enjoy mind-bending performance that's spiced with a menacing touch of legendary motorsports heritage, it's your chance to claim a potential future classic!

LOUIS CHEVROLET

The second child of a Swiss watchmaker, Louis Chevrolet always had a fascination with mechanical things -- specifically mechanical things that moved. At the tender age of eight, he became a bicycle mechanic and enjoyed his first taste of wheeled competition. Eventually his technical prowess won him a job offer from the Vanderbilts and moving fare to America. However, in an effort to stick close to his family, Chevrolet continued to work in various automobile plants in around Beaune, France. When Louis finally settled in America, on his own terms, he teamed with Fiat to claim his first race victory. The next year, in 1906, he sat a mile record at the wheel of a Darracq. And, by 1909, he was racing Buicks for infamous Detroit icon Billy C. Durant. The Durant/Chevrolet alliance proved very successful and, in November of 1911, the Chevrolet Motor Car Company debuted its first model. Now, if you know automotive history you know that both Durant and Chevrolet were rather rambunctious personalities with low tolerances for dissent. That's likely why, just three years later, Chevrolet totally exited his namesake operation.

A racer's racer who, like his more famous colleague Enzo Ferrari, cared more for competition than business, Louis wrangled his brothers Gaston and Arthur into a new company called Frontenac. Founded in Indiana, Frontenac had one goal: to build a race car that would win the Indianapolis 500. And, in 1920, that's exactly what they did. Tragically, Gaston passed away later that year during a race at Beverly Hills Speedway, but he'd already dominated the season to the point that he was posthumously crowned the 1920 “Speed King of the Year” AAA National Champion. Louis Chevrolet always lived by the motto “Never give up”, and that resiliency was on full display as he and Arthur regrouped their operations into the Chevrolet Brothers Manufacturing Company. Created in 1921 as a speed shop for automotive and aviation enthusiasts, Chevrolet Brothers was an international entity that, despite its success, would be short-lived. And that's when everything came full circle, as Louis Chevrolet moved back to Detroit where he once again joined the original company that bore his name.

COMMON SUCCESS

It seems wholly appropriate that, in celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Chevrolet brand would prominently display its founder's face on its flagship sports car. Like Louis, the Chevrolet brand is a tenacious entity that built great success through a myriad of experiences. This isn't a marque that does one thing and does it well. The bowtie division provides mobility for everyone from EV and sports car buyers to commercial truck and luxury SUV buyers. Louis Chevrolet was many different things to many different people. A racer. A fighter. A success. A failure. A common man. A superstar. Loved by many. Hated by some…. He represented the best of everyday America, especially at the track. Just like this menacing Corvette Grand Sport!
