Description

What do you see when you dial up our website and check out this world class GT500? One of the coolest muscle cars ever produced? One of the most in-demand classic cars on the collector car market? An outrageous pro-tourer that doubles as a thoroughbred athlete and a red carpet show queen? All the above?

Sure, vintage Shelby Mustangs are some of the coolest and most popular classics around, and the comfort and ability provided by the pro-touring movement really puts the icing on the cake. But this fastback… Well, it's on a different level. Created by the RKM Performance Center to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford's legendary Mustang, this custom is the direct result of some of the industry's best builders exploring the supreme limits of the pro-touring resto-mod movement. Make no mistake, this Shelby isn't just a cool muscle car with a big V8, it's the kind of machine that truly separates casual enthusiasts from serious drivers. And, complementing everything great about timeless Detroit muscle with thoughtful customization and incredible power, it's one of the most visceral versions of one of the most popular muscle cars ever created!

SEVEN CITIES, SEVEN DAYS, SEVEN HUNDRED ELEVEN HORSEPOWER

As a rule, the best builds begin as solid classics, and that's exactly how this fresh Ford rolled into our Charlotte shop. And the end result is one rockin' street stalker that shines bright through its timeless Candyapple exterior, painted Wimbledon White top stripes and bright GT500 side stripes. Since this fastback was such a head turner, someone on our staff mentioned the Hot Rod Power Tour. After many months of fabricating, tuning and sorting, our 'race car in a Shelby wrapper' joined thousands of other road-ready classics to participate in the 20th running of the magazine's renowned endurance cruise. And over the next seven days and 1,500 miles, the radical ride we now affectionately called RK527 scorched the blacktop from Concord, North Carolina all the way to Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin!

PUTTING THE 527 IN RK527

Back in 2014, we were the only folks crazy enough to shove a massive Jon Kaase Boss Nine between the fenders of a first-generation Mustang. Purchased at a cost of $37K, and tweaked in our shop by Kaase himself, this Mustang's monster mill is conservatively tuned to an easy 711 horsepower and a massive 806 lb./ft. of tire torching torque. At the top of that aluminum wonder, a low-profile air cleaner drops wind through a tall Kaase intake that's wired with FAST electronic injection and Wilson Manifolds fuel rails. That plane feeds hot aluminum heads, which cap stainless valves and aluminum roller rockers with polished Moroso breathers and requisite Jon Kaase covers. Compression is created when a billet Bryant crank pushes Oliver rods under forged pistons. Exhaust exits through $5,000 worth of custom stainless headers. A billet distributor sequences spark between an MSD Blaster 2 coil, MSD Digital 6AL ignition and loomed Jon Kaase plug wires. A polished Billet Specialties Tru Trac serpentine drive spins an Edelbrock water pump behind a polished alternator and a polished AC compressor. A big Fluidyne radiator cycles coolant around a billet expansion tank and spry SPAL puller fans. The car's massaged engine bay is dotted with first class accessories like a trick dipstick, an old school Ford washer bag and a small JEGS fuel pressure gauge. And everything, from this classic's quick Powermaster starter to its quality VaporWorx fuel control, gleefully implies the Boss Nine's prodigious power!

YESTERDAY'S LOOKS, TODAY'S ATHLETICISM

Behind the brutal Kaase powerplant, a hydraulic McLeod twin disc clutch joins a billet Performance Quotient flywheel to kick a predictable Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed. That gearbox, dressed in a tough Lakewood/QuickTime bellhousing, spins a custom driveshaft that's secured with a Total Control Products hoop. That tube twists a familiar Ford 9-inch that's finished with 3.55 gears and tough Moser axles. That pumpkin rolls on a Detroit Speed QUADRALink rear-clip. That clip pushes a Detroit Speed Aluma-Frame front-half. Turns come courtesy of power rack-and-pinion steering. Drilled and slotted rotors, 12 and 13 inches, respectively, thread Baer 4-piston calipers behind Baer 6-piston calipers. At the center of the car's Red Oxide floors, custom, large-diameter pipes shuttle spent gases through welded, dual-chamber mufflers and polished stainless tips. Power meets the pavement through retro American Racing wheels, which spin 245/40ZR18 BF Goodrich g-Force Rivals in front of 335/30ZR18 BF Goodrich g-Force Rivals. And this Ford's excellent build is spiced with first class details like welded subframe connectors and a big Rock Valley fuel tank.

TASTEFUL AND CLASSIC

Open the door to this awesome Mustang and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that features the best elements of Ford's Black bucket seat interior. Front-and-center, short buckets string subtle Impact Racing harnesses beneath a Shelby roll bar and factory shoulder belts. In front of those thrones, a dual-cowl dash hangs a correct 140 MPH speedometer and a correct 8,000 RPM tachometer above controls for Vintage Air conditioning and correct Stewart Warner accessory gauges. An RK-branded shifter rides between factory side panels, fade-free carpet and a factory headliner. And the driver spins an attractive Shelby steering wheel.

Very few classics possess the thrill-inducing performance of this incredible Shelby GT500. You're looking at a scary fast, purpose-built head-turner, and, make NO mistake, when your foot hits the floor that's exactly what you'll get! Tired of the hobby's obsession with bright, bling-tastic garage queens? Want to look good AND go fast? Don't miss your chance to claim this ultimate pro-touring resto-mod!
