National Award Winning Mustang 289 K-code V8 Toploader 4-speed Ford 9 Discs
When it comes to universal appeal, few cars bring it quite like the Mustang. While a lot of Ford's competitors placed an emphasis on speed, style or some other singular piece of the puzzle, Dearborn did its best to be everything to everyone. As Ford Motor Company celebrates the expansion of the Mustang name into a performance-oriented sub brand, it's a fantastic time to invest in a legendary classic! This national award winning K-code fastback is a very early and accurate representation of the formula that, 55 years later, claims the title of the world's best-selling sports car. And if you're in the market for an exceptional Mustang that will not disappoint, it's the old school cool you've been patiently waiting for!
THE GT'S COY SIBLING
Back in 1965, buyers of the GT Equipment Package could add the K-code 289 to their new ride for an extra $276. That said, most folks had no idea that the package was also available on the non-GT cars for $328. But still, why build a K-code Mustang without the GT treatment? Well, in the case of this '65 fastback, it was because the car's build pre-dates the GT option. Benefitting from a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration that was completed by the pros at Dennis Francis Restorations of Danville, North Carolina, this Ford's solid body was primed to a smooth canvas for a correct and glossy coat of Rangoon Red two-stage. Naturally, that rebirth was completed to a 100% factory-correct appearance, with a specific eye toward tags, paint drips overspray and markings. And when this classic made its grand debut, it followed AACA First Junior and First Senior honors with MCA Gold honors and invites to multiple concours events.
It's obvious that Ford has always sweated the details on the Mustang. At the front of this pony, traditional halogen headlights anchor a 'bomber sight' grille between a “F O R D” branded hood, a sinuous bumper and bullet-style parking lamps. Behind that hood, factory-tint glass rides between bright stainless wipers, straight stainless frames and classy chrome mirrors. At the sides of that glass, a traditionally sculpted profile lays the groundwork for simple handles, ornate louvers and world famous Mustang badging. And at the back of that profile, a second sinuous bumper reflects fresh taillights, a detailed fuel filler and a cool Tasca Ford emblem.
DATE-CORRECT
Pop the hood and you'll find a date-correct K-code 289 that wears a familiar C5AE-6015-E casting number. Rated at 271 horses straight from the factory floor, the 289 was such a spry mill that Carroll Shelby used it as the foundation for his legendary GT350. And this particular 289 has been fully rebuilt with a 331 stroker kit. At the top of the engine, a correctly decaled air cleaner floats breeze through a reliable 4-barrel carburetor. At the base of that carb, a factory intake feeds stock heads. At the front of those heads, a reliable points distributor shoots fire through proven SX plug wires. Cooling is provided by an original-style radiator, which fills pliable FoMoCo hoses that are threaded through requisite tower clamps. The great sounding engine rolls in a completely restored engine bay that's been finished in traditional Satin Black. And niceties like correct decals, a correct FoMoCo washer bag and rubber heater hose straps provide a legit 1965 appearance.
FACTORY-CORRECT
What would an excellent restoration be without a great foundation? Take a look under this Mustang and you'll find solid floors that, featuring overspray in all the right locations, are highlighted by a roster of carefully restored hardware. Behind the hot 289, a correct Toploader 4-speed turns a tried and true Ford 9-inch that's finished with fun, 3.50 gears. The car's factory suspension has been slightly lowered in the front to mirror Shelby cars of the era. Manual disc and drum brakes provide firm, fade-free stops. Step on the gas and the aforementioned headers hurl exhaust into true-dual pipes that breathes through an H-shaped crossover and correct chambered mufflers. And power meets the pavement through chromed Styled Steel wheels that spin 195/70R14 BF Goodrich Traction T/As.
AS IT WAS
Open the door to this awesome Mustang and you'll find a fully restored vinyl interior that provides an exceptionally attractive spot to cruise. Factory bucket seats wear clean covers opposite a straight dash that's finished with a full assortment of fully rebuilt gauges. A stylish steering wheel spins a famous Mustang centerpiece above fade-free carpet that's protected by Mustang-themed mats. A simple shifter reflects ornate side panels that are trimmed with small lamps and stylish stainless. And a factory headliner leads the eye to a fully restored and correctly finished trunk.
There's simply nothing like keying up a legendary pony car. The sound, the feeling at idle, and the relentless surge of torque as you power through the gears. This authentic K-code Mustang is the opportunity to experience the very foundation of Ford greatness. And if you're in the market for some cool old school metal that'll turn heads and build equity, it's the classy classic of your dreams!
