One-Owner 8-Mile 454 SS Pickup Truck on MSO
While Detroit has built quite a reputation for exceptional, high performance trucks, the concept of the Sport Truck is a relatively modern phenomenon. Sure, there were a few oddities throughout the years, like Dodge's Li'l Red Express, Free Wheeling Fords and quirky Dakota Sport convertibles, but none of those were exactly performance oriented. No, as with the first golden age of muscle cars almost three decades prior, it was the mighty General Motors that officially kicked off the Sport Truck wars. What's more, GM spiced up their workhorse trucks largely the same way they spiced up their grocery getter cars – by outfitting a basic, strong-selling chassis with a giant engine and appealing yet timeless aesthetics. Based on The General's venerable T400 platform, the Chevrolet 454 SS traded towing capacity for time slips all while opening up enthusiasts' minds. Today, roughly 30 years later, “performance” and “trucks” go hand in hand!
So, as a collector, what if you could completely rewind the clock? What if you could grab a sweet, like-new Chevy 454 SS that's the nicest of its lot over 30 years after it left the assembly line? Well, as we all know, there's only the here and now. And what's right here, right now is this exclusive, 8.8-mile 454 SS that so fresh it's still wrapped in factory plastic! That's right, take a long look at your next one-of-a-kind time capsule!
BAD IN BLACK!
Starting with one of the best looking full-size Chevy trucks to ever roll off an assembly line, designers built the menacing 454 SS around a short bed, single cab C1500 that traded classy chrome for brawny callouts. While GM did eventually offer two more color options, no one will argue that the truck's lightweight fleetside profile doesn't look its best in an Earnhardt-worthy coat of Onyx Black. On this first-year 454 SS, that muted pigment shines virtually new thanks to the truck residing in one owner's extensive private collection for the duration of its existence. And the pickup's tight factory panels display clean and even gaps all the way around.
Sinister detailing often hinges on simplicity, and this Chevy is certainly both delightfully sinister and splendidly simple. At the front of the truck, a blacked out grille centers a familiar red bowtie above sporty fog lights and a blacked out bumper. Low-profile Cheyenne mirrors reflect a crisp greenhouse above muted rocker guards that frame red C1500 emblems. Bold “454 SS” decals adorn a pristine bed. And at the back of that bed, a second blacked out bumper frames a smooth tailgate that's finished with a sporty Chevrolet script.
BIG BLOCK POWER!
Pop the hood and you'll find an original, 454 cubic inch MARK IV V8 that twists a stout 230 horsepower into a whopping 385 lb./ft. of torque! In an era when big block power seemed like a relic of bygone days, this 7.4 liter land rocket was Chevrolet's way of introducing the thrill of bottomless big bore power to a new generation of car enthusiasts. Behind that proven mill, an original Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed sends power to a locking differential that's finished with original, 3.73 gears. The truck's aggressive rake comes courtesy of a factory suspension that's built around Bilstein shocks and an upsized sway bar. A quick-ratio steering box plays well with power front disc and rear drum brakes. And everything rolls on polished wheels and original BF Goodrich Comp T/A tires.
COMFORT AT SPEED
Between the doors, Garnet Red cloth is 100% showroom fresh thanks to pliable factory plastic. High-back buckets, a hallmark of the 454 SS, provide comfortable and supportive seating. Those thrones join a small console on clean red carpet that's, you guessed it, still armored in tight factory plastic. A boxy, crack-free dash frames delightfully retro instrumentation next to factory A/C and factory audio. That dash looks great between simple, fade-free side panels that highlight requisite power windows and lucid power door locks. And the driver spins a four-spoke steering wheel around factory Cruise Control and a tilting column.
Combining big power with handsome aesthetics and exceptional collector car provenance, this sweet Chevy is a great classic to preserve and enjoy. Looking for some choice metal that's highly exclusive yet easily approachable? Congratulations, you've found your next muse!
