Description

Thoughts of the legendary Charger immediately bring to mind a near perfect blend of basic transportation and big performance. See, back in the late '60s when muscle cars started packing on premiums to increase margins, Dodge continued to honor the tenets of the cheap speed movement. In fact, the second-generation Charger was carefully designed to stay firmly grounded in the realm of affordability. And today, 50 years into the future, that adherence to principle fosters a remarkable line-up of classics that, because of their purity, seem to perpetually gain value. Take this brilliantly sinister coupe for example. Combining 528 cubic inches of Ray Barton Hemi with a Tremec 5-speed, an upgraded suspension and a ground-up, nut-and-bolt restoration, it's an excellent example of why vintage Detroit metal will always be incredibly appealing. Shopping for an unadulterated embodiment of the quintessential muscle car? Take a long look at this impressive MoPar!

I SEE A CHARGER, AND I WANT IT PAINTED BLACK

Appropriately named The Beast by its passionate builder, this striking Charger resto-mod is the beneficiary of a detailed, ground-up restoration that wrapped in late 2021. That 4.5-year reboot, garnished with $100K in parts, reflects beauty in the form of rich PPG two-stage. And both beauty and beast live happily ever under a roster of custom yet timeless details. At the front of the car, a traditional silver grille hangs a traditional “Charger R/T” script behind a shaved bumper, a Satin Black frame and classic, fratzog-branded parking lamps. Behind that grille, a scalloped hood centers small turn indicators in front of crisp glass that's cleared by black wipers and framed in black stainless. At the sides of that glass, a sleek profile centers trick mirrors and Kindigit door handles between filled markers, a camo-ed fuel filler and massaged door scallops. A custom, fully integrated deck spoiler shades factory taillights and a tasteful Charger emblem. And a second shaved bumper guards bright reverse lamps and blacked out exhaust tips.

BLISTERING OF EARTH

Spinning a solid 600 horsepower, this Dodge's 528 cubic inch Ray Barton Hemi is ready for anything the street throws at it… Anything! At the top of the $30K mill, a glossy black air cleaner dumps breeze into a duo of Edelbrock 4-barrels, which feed a lightweight aluminum intake. At the sides of that plane, aluminum Ray Barton heads tilt coated Ray Barton valve covers under a billet oil cap and billet Moroso breathers. Stout 10.0 to 1 compression gets sparked by an MSD Pro-Billet distributor, which sequences fire between an MSD Blaster SS coil and Moroso Blue Max Plug Wires. At the front of those wires, a smooth Billet Specialties Tru Trac serpentine drive spins black pulleys in front of an aluminum water pump, a polished AC compressor and a polished alternator. In front of those ancillaries, a beefy Be Cool radiator makes excellent use of two SPAL puller fans. And exhaust duties are handled by, you guessed it: black long-tube headers. Silky black two-stage slinks through the whole engine bay, highlighting a clean firewall and slick fenders. And overall, everything from the car's deep oil pan and Be Cool overflow to its Wilwood master cylinder and muted Ringbrothers steering reservoir is well planned and well executed.

I GOTTA ROLL, CAN'T STAND STILL

Bottom-side, a smooth hydraulic clutch kicks a modern Tremec 5-speed that was sourced directly from the pros at Silver Sport. That transmission spins a tough Dynotech driveshaft that's hooked to a sporty Dana 60 axle. The car's thoughtfully reinforced chassis floats welded frame connectors between requisite mini tubs and a thoughtfully upgraded suspension. That suspension wraps a two-inch drop around Eaton springs, QA-1 coil-overs and a Reilly MotorSports AlterKation front-clip. That slammed skeleton gets pointed through power rack-and-pinion steering. Quick stops are a cinch thanks to big Wilwood calipers, which push 20 pistons against a quartet of drilled and slotted rotors. The aforementioned headers push exhaust through aluminized pipes that are formed around an X-shaped crossover and throaty Dynomax mufflers. Fossils flow from a fresh stainless tank. And at the corners, color-keyed Forgeline blades turn 245/35ZR18 Michelin Pilot Super Sports in front of 345/30ZR19 Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

ALL YOUR LIFE

When you pop this Charger's doors, you'll find a tastefully customized cockpit that, while decidedly upscale, honors the car's legacy of being old school American muscle. Top dead center, a body-matched dash hangs a cool carbon-look Instrument Panel around Vintage Air conditioning, a Radio Delete and handsome Classic Instruments AutoCross telemetry. Diamond-stitched seats, cribbed from a modern Camaro, stretch tight leather between factory side panels. A familiar Pistol Grip Shifter sails carbon-look inlays over a custom, leather-wrapped console and clean, fade-free carpet. The driver spins a Billet Specialties Formula wheel around a modern, tilting column. And a carpeted trunk provides easy access to an Optima gel cell battery.

With a beastly drivetrain, an excellent restoration and stunning aesthetics, this super cool MoPar combines big swagger with big appeal. It's fast. It's fun. And the addition of conveniences like better stopping, better handling, air conditioning and custom upholstery simply sweeten the deal. Longing for a lights-out resto-mod that's built to please? Take a long look at this impressive 1969 Charger!
