Description

At RK Motors Charlotte, we sell a lot of awesome Detroit Muscle and we enjoy every minute of it. But it's always refreshing when something a little different comes through the door. This cool 1971 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback is an unusual, highly appealing time capsule that retains its original drivetrain, houses its original interior and would make any VW collector very happy.

The Type 3 diversified Volkswagen's product range beyond its three existing models, the Beetle (Type 1) the Bus (Type 2) and the Karmann Ghia (Type 14). It was aptly named a 'fastback' because despite being a four door wagon, it featured a sports car profile and great proportions. This particular Type 3 has only changed hands twice in its forty years of existence and was garage kept the entire time. This resulted in a solid body with factory correct panel gaps that has never been worked on or taken apart. While this car's paint isn't concours, it does carry a nice shine and would look great motoring down the street to any VW show. Up front, a bright chrome bumper is lined with protective trim and sits below a “VW” emblem that begins a central body line which continues through the trunk lid. At the edges of the car, curved marker lights sit below clear headlights that are trimmed in chrome and wrap around the corners of the body. The headlights are seated in round fenders that begin the arrow-like profile of the car which includes well maintained stainless trim along its main body lines. On the rocker panels, two more strips of stainless present well, and under the rear windows, vents for the air cooled engine add texture to an otherwise smooth fuselage. Glass looks good in all eight windows and, along with the doors, is trimmed in fresh weather stripping. The cars original chrome mirrors complement, chrome window trim, original chrome door handles and silver windshield wipers. The roof of the car is painted white to keep the cabin cool and shows no signs of fading or weathering. At the back of the car, another bright chrome bumper with protective trim sits above a stainless steel exhaust tip and below two distinctly Volkswagen tail lights that look original. On the hatch you'll find a chrome trimmed tag light and classic angled “Volkswagen” script.

Open the hood and you'll find the cars original air cooled 1.6L (1584 cc) 'pancake' engine. It was named the 'pancake' engine because, during development, the fan was moved to the end of the crankshaft allowing the engine to be pancaked between the cars chassis and a cargo area behind the rear seat. The Type 3's engine was the world's first volume production engine to feature electronic fuel injection. Pioneered by Bosch, the D-Jetronic system is featured on this '71 Type 3 allows the car to reach 60 mph in a leisurely 20 seconds and top out at 84 MPH. While that may not be spine tingling acceleration by todays standards, the system does make the car feel more lively in traffic, especially when its coupled with this cars manual transmission. The engine bay looks good for a 40 year old car and I'd venture to say that this car has been largely unmodified save for the two small diameter chrome air cleaners that sit on either side of the engine bay. The car sounds good with the pre-requisite unique vintage Volkswagen gait and achieves roughly 26 miles per gallon, which greatly increases the range of its nine gallon fuel tank.

This Type 3 naturally retains the traditional rear engine, rear wheel drive Volkswagen layout and includes Volkswagens improved front suspension design. Spanning the full width of the car is cross-mounted round torsion bars that, along with an anti-roll bar that connects the upper trailing links together, makes for a much safer ride than Volkswagen traditional torsion leaf set up. The rear suspension is the cars original CV joint semi trailing arm system that houses the cars original 4-speed manual transmission which rows through the gears now just as well as it did in 1971. The cars original exhaust system snakes out from the rear mounted engine including a glasspack style muffler and the aforementioned stainless steel tip. At all four corners of the car you'll find original brakes, discs in front and drums in back, that benefit from fresh hoses, and replacement shocks that appear to be in good shape. The floorpan is dent free and doesn't exhibit any major rust or problem areas and new correct 15 inch steel wheels are mounted on wide white wall 165R15 Geostar tires. On top of those wheels is a fresh coat of paint, fresh chrome “VW” center caps and stainless trim rings.

Open the door and check out an all original interior that is in very good shape given its age. The seats have been well taken care of and are very comfortable with only the driver's seat showing signs of wear at the corners. The original carpet is free of any major stains and features lower air vents and stylish contrasting carpet floor mats. The original dash pad is trimmed in chrome and despite being repaired around its center vent, is still one of the most stylish parts of the car. The lower dash is painted red to match the exterior of the car and features a speedometer a fuel gauge with incorporated warning lights and an electric clock. The door panels are original and in excellent shape featuring black grab handles, map pockets, black and chrome window cranks and great looking chrome door handles. In front of the driver is a classic original Volkswagen steering wheel and to the right of the driver is a simple black stick shifter for the 4-speed and a black emergency brake handle. The original headliner is as tight as the day it left the showroom and in front of the interior, the cargo area features a correct mat and a full size spare tire. Behind the interior, the cargo area on top of the motor is clean and includes a black rubber mat.

Documentation included with this sale is an original owner's manual, a Volkswagen Type 3 Haynes shop manual and a past bill of sale.

If you know vintage Volkswagens, you know that finding an all original '71 Type 3 is almost impossible, especially one that's been this well maintained. If you know Volkswagen enthusiasts, you know that they'll likely flood our phone lines and beat down the doors to the showroom just as soon as this car posts to our website.
