If you're a car guy who's anywhere south of 100, or anywhere north of 30, chances are you know exactly where “east bound and down” came from. And if you know where “east bound and down” came from, it's a good possibility you're very familiar with this 1978 Pontiac Trans Am. What's my point? If you're one of the growing number of enthusiasts rediscovering just how cool F2 Trans Ams are but aren't quite sure you want to regress that far into youth, here's your chance to throw a little sophistication into the mix. Fully documented and ready to roll, this brassy black and gold 'bird isn't just a bold throwback to simpler times and cooler cars, it's a timeless commentary on smart investment for the future. So, if you're into legendary American muscle and giant Screamin' Chicken decals, order up some flutes of Coors, throw on the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra's Down on the Farm and toast your next classic!
BANDIT SPECIAL EDITION
Assembled at GM's famous Norwood manufacturing facility, this striking resto-mod is an authentic WS4 Trans Am that originally sported 400 cubic inches of pure Pontiac power. At some point, thanks to a detailed, ground-up restoration, the car was completely stripped and carefully massaged from good condition into great condition. And today, meticulously maintained since that thorough dust off, this awesome F2 displays a rich coat of Starlight Black two-stage under Special Edition full outlining stripes and an iconic Special Edition Screamin' Chicken hood decal.
Despite their minimal brightwork, second-generation Trans Ams were highly decorated cars that brought new meaning to the word 'details'. At the front of this 'bird, straight and glossy urethane hangs Special Edition headlight buckets and a small “PONTIAC” script between a gothic “TRANS AM” callout and a traditional arrowhead. Behind that face, a “T/A-6.6” branded shaker leads the eye to fresh glass, which rides beneath painted stainless and tinted T-tops. At the sides of that glass, more “TRANS AM” callouts join Special Edition B-pillar birds to complement integrated fender vents, decaled door handles and cool wheel spoilers. And at the back of the car, a rounded D80 trunk wing aligns dramatic “PONTIAC and “TRANS AM” brandings above fresh taillights and polished side-splitter exhaust.
LS POWER
When it comes to the perfect blend of power, reliability and fixability, nothing beats a stalwart GM small block. With that in mind, it seems perfectly logical that this storied pony car sports 5.3 liters of proven LS motivation. At the front of that mill, a remote filter cone feeds cool air into a polished tube that's cinched to an electronic GM throttle body. That valve works well with a composite GM intake, which points GM electronic fuel injection at aluminum GM heads and an iron GM block. At the sides of that block, factory coil packs fire 7mm plug wires, which split stainless shorty headers. Lucid serpentine components spin modern GM power steering beneath a modern alternator and a modern AC compressor. A big puller fan cools a beefy aluminum radiator. GM Corporate Blue block skin adds a bit of retro flair. And aesthetically, the compact mill seems right at home in this Pontiac's clean, Satin Black engine bay.
WS4 TRANS AM
Under this Trans Am, clean floorpans wrap smooth, Satin Black paint around a thoughtfully rebuilt chassis. At the center of the car, a smooth 4L60E 4-speed funnels power through a 2,600 RPM stall converter. Torque meets the pavement through a dressed GM 10-bolt, which spins fun, 3.42 gears. Below that stellar powertrain, a familiar WS4 suspension hangs fluid power steering between big sway bars and standard issue power front disc and rear drum brakes. A fresh exhaust system barks a rowdy roar through an X-shaped crossover, dual-chamber Flowmaster mufflers and polished Side Splitter tips. And at the corners of those tubes, gold-laced Snowflakes spin requisite 'gold bird' center caps inside 275/40ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sports.
GOLD AND GO
Open this Pontiac's massive doors and you'll find a crisp vinyl interior that wraps gold, Special Edition trim in a whole lot of old school comfort! The airy cockpit begins with thick seats that are tall, taut and look restoration-fresh in every way. Red Bird door panels cage like-new carpet, which centers a sculpted factory console on a factory shifter and factory window switches. A gold-trimmed dash plants digital telemetry above modern air conditioning and modern, direct-fit audio, which appears to have Bluetooth capability. And the driver spins a Formula Steering Wheel around a tilting factory column.
Fully restored from its factory T-tops all the way to its slick Snowflakes, this sweet Trans Am is impressive Motor City muscle that'll satisfy any classic car enthusiast! This is the kind of car you park at the show on Saturday, then drive to work on a sunny Monday morning. In the market for a clean, late model F2? NOW is the time to buy an impressive showpiece to enjoy for years to come!
