Description

John Lingenfelter was a very successful NHRA competitor, a legendary tuner and a well-respected member of the performance community. His trademarks were a great personality and an uncanny ability to build vehicles with unbelievable performance that were still practical enough to drive up and down the streets every day. This 2003 Fiftieth Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette with 7,799 actual miles was sent to Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) for a thorough makeover and is a spectacular all-around performer that will satisfy anyone who likes their cars loud, athletic and fast.

For the 2000 model year, General Motors introduced Millennium Yellow as a premium paint on the C5 Corvette. Utilizing a three stage process, Millennium Yellow begins with a white basecoat, adds a yellow tint and is finished off with a protective clearcoat. The color was an instant hit and made up a large percentage of Corvette sales in the following years. Factory original, with the exception of the custom LPE hood, this paint is one of the best factory sprays I've ever seen with a bright finish and virtually no defects. It has been meticulously maintained and has never driven through or even sat in rain or inclement weather of any kind. Visually, the fifth generation (C5) Corvette is probably one of the cleanest and most balanced shapes ever introduced. GM designers had spent years refining the basic Corvette shape and surface detailing was obviously priority number one. Up front, the wide nose of the car features sculpted air inlets that house combination marker and cornering lamps next to sinister round driving lights. Between the airs intakes, a stamped Corvette tag insert sits below a silver fiftieth anniversary 'wind swept' Corvette emblem. Behind that emblem, a custom fiberglass hood by LPE features perfectly matched yellow paint and a higher cowl to accommodate the supercharger. The sides of the car are completely free of ornamentation and disruptions with everything from the body colored mirrors to the factory radiused wheel openings whittled to give this car its slick 0.29 coefficient of drag. Razor sharp trim runs from the traditional front fender air extractors to under the body colored door handles and aligns perfectly with oval marker lights behind the tires on the rear fenders. Wind flows around the all original, like-new glass to a smoothed hatch that features another pristine silver Corvette emblem. Behind that emblem, the familiar convex Corvette rear panel features stamped Corvette script between four oval brake lights. Clear reverse lights border the tag and sit above four centered stainless exhaust tips with a chrome LPE exhaust plate that features body matched letters. The car comes with both a body colored removable roof and a tinted glass removable roof.

Underneath this Corvettes hood is a powerplant that will fulfill the loud and fast appearance of its body. Front and center on top of the engine is a silver Magnacharger supercharger that forces air into an already potent aluminum LS1 V8. Supplying air to the supercharger is a Donaldson Air intake that combines with a stainless 3.5 Inch GHL Bull's eye cat back exhaust system to pile on even more power. Finally, the engine was equipped with a 160 degree thermostat and topped off with PCM tuning for a killer 490hp and 480 ft./lb. of torque that is guaranteed to turn this Corvette into a fiberglass missile. The LPE install is first-rate throughout with clean lines and bright red LPE fuel rail covers that rival OEM quality in every way. Excellent workmanship is even present at the bottom of the custom hood which is extremely well finished and looks like it came straight from the factory. The engine bay is spotless throughout and everything appears showroom fresh with the car retaining all of its original components, save for the add-ons by LPE.

This car is factory equipped with the fantastic Corvette Z51 suspension that is more than capable of harnessing all the extra horsepower. A double A-arm set up combines with an independent rear suspension and power four wheel disc brakes to make this car as fun in the curves as it is on the straightaway. The high performance GHL stainless 3.5 inch Bull's eye exhaust system sounds aggressive, especially when combined with the factory Borg Warner T56 6-speed manual transmission. Planting the car firmly on the ground is a set of three piece polished iForged Evolution alloys that are 18x9.5 in the front and 19x11 in the rear. Wrapped around those dramatic wheels is 275/35/18 Michelin Pilot Sport radials in the front and 295/35/19 Michelin Pilot Sport radials in the rear.

Inside, this C5 Corvette's all-black leather interior is in great condition and shows little if any wear at all. Obviously well-maintained by a fastidious owner, the power seats look firm and comfortable and the black dash is sports car basic but features a number of luxury items to make your trip as enjoyable as it is quick. Above the console, dual zone climate control adds comfort while a Delco cassette player, complete with speed compensated volume, controls the cars 12 disc CD changer. At the side of the steering wheel, you'll find cruise control and at the top of the cowl, GM's renowned Heads Up Display projects vital instrumentation onto the windshield. The driver's side A pillar has been fitted with an LPE lighted boost gauge and the pristine door panels feature power windows, power door locks, power mirrors with memory settings and Bose speakers. At your right hand, in front of the locking console, you'll find controls for the Active Handling traction control. Behind the seats, a cargo area which is large enough to stow the cars roof panel, features yellow carpet with a great looking stitched Corvette logo. Door sill plates with yellow Corvette emblems and yellow inserts on the steering wheel and dash match the yellow carpet and serve brighten the 'all business' interior. Despite what the car magazines all said, I think this is a great-looking interior. It's purposely basic to emphasize the driver to car relationship but also provides the driver with comfort and luxuries.

Documentation for this car includes receipts and a list of upgrades from the LPE install, an official dyno sheet from LPE, receipts for the aftermarket wheels and tires, a printed Car and Driver article highlighting the LPE package that's on the car and photos of the car displayed in various places.

The C5 Corvette is still an amazing performance bargain, and with Lingenfelter Performance Engineering enhancements, everything that is already good about the Corvette is simply magnified. Diligently maintained, this Millennium Yellow Corvette practically glows in daylight and is a spectacular show and go piece that will be a star anywhere it goes. If you're looking for a car that lures people in with its awesome looks and then blows them away with its awesome performance, this is your car. Call today!
