A creative way for Willys-Overland to expand their legendary truck and SUV prowess into the burgeoning passenger car market, the first-generation Jeepster is essentially a Willys sports car. In fact, available only as a rear-wheel-drive roadster, the truck was officially marketed as “America's greatest value in sports cars”. The folks at Willys envisioned affordable performance for World War II veterans, and the Jeepster, well-optioned in comparison to its competition, wrapped distinct CJ style around the firm's battle-proven Go Devil 4-cylinder. That said, peddled by a niche company against the likes of bullet nose Fords, the original Merc sled and GM's evergreen brand hierarchy, the truck simply wasn't a big seller. And, after just three short years on the market, the original Jeepster was relegated to a curious blip in Jeep's fabled history.
