Description

If you're a fan of '70s muscle, it seems like everywhere you turn you see MoPar this or GM that. It's almost as if a large segment of the hobby has simply forgotten about all the hot cars Ford produced during Detroit's golden era. Or… Maybe it's just selective memory. And maybe GM and MoPar guys are too ashamed to admit that cars like this sweet Mercury Cyclone, an authentic, fully documented Spoiler, are much cooler and much more exclusive than their beloved classics. At any rate, the proof is on the pavement. And if you buy this fully sorted piece of Americana, you'll be able to school 'the other guys' on the road AND at the show. Are you a diehard Ford fan who's looking for some rock-solid muscle that's stylish, powerful and roomy enough to take your other-minded friends on enlightening journeys? Then this slick Merc is just the car you need!

NO COMPETITION FOR COMPETITION YELLOW

“I've never seen one of those.”

That's a common phrase from enthusiasts visiting our showroom when they first lay eyes on this awesome Cyclone. And while, at first, it might be shocking to muscle car aficionados within earshot, it's really not that hard to understand when you comprehend the exclusivity of Mercury's fabled Spoiler. One of just 353 Cyclone Spoilers produced for the 1971 model year, this fully documented, correctly restored classic is also one of just THREE 1971 Cyclone Spoilers that wraps storied 429 power in vivid Competition Yellow paint and bright White upholstery. Sold new at McAllen, Texas' Glasco Motor Company, this pedigreed coupe is the beneficiary of a comprehensive, nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration that consisted of mostly NOS and restored original parts. And, as you might imagine, that methodical rebuild left no detail unattended in the quest for absolute authenticity.

The top option for Mercury's already upscale Cyclone, the Spoiler backed track-proven Ford performance with some of Dearborn's best styling. At the leading edge of this slick coupe, an ornate bumper frames a signature Mercury Gunsight Grille that's finished with hide-away headlights and classy parking lamps. At the top of that stainless-trimmed fascia, a bold header callout leads a Ram Air Hood, which fronts fresh, stainless-trimmed glass that's capped in correct White vinyl. At the sides of that grain, flowing Spoiler stripes join traditional door handles, subtle wheel frames and body-matched racing mirrors to provide an aggressive yet finished appearance. And at the back of the car, a Flat Black wing shades a Flat Black tail panel that's complemented by stylish taillights and a second polished bumper.

429 RAM AIR COBRA JET

For 1970 and 1971, Ford's impressive Cobra Jet V8 was standard fare for the Cyclone Spoiler. And while other automakers were busy acquiescing to unjust government regulations and annoying insurance scams, Mercury brass was still in FULL SEND mode! The top-option 429 Cobra Jet-powered Spoiler featured the same 'advertised', meaning grossly underrated, 370 horsepower and 450 lb./ft. of torque as its 1970 predecessor. And this Merc, naturally, features 429 cubic inches of Ford 385 power that's capped with requisite ram air induction. At full throttle, the flapper valve opens, drawing cool oxygen through a correctly painted air cleaner into a spry Autolite 4-barrel. Below that juice box, cast iron heads seat a cast iron intake between finned aluminum valve covers. At the front of that intake, a traditional points distributor sequences spark through Autolite Radio Resistance cables. Cast iron exhaust manifolds conduct an octane-fueled symphony through free-breathing tail pipes. Traditional V-belts spin correct power steering and a rebuilt alternator next to an Autolite-topped battery. A large radiator cycles coolant through reproduction Autolite hoses and old school screw clamps. And, as you can see from our high resolution photography, the Ford Blue beast is homed in a solid, era-correct engine bay that sails correct marks and decals on a smooth coat of Satin Black skin.

FIT FOR THE WOOD BROTHERS AND PEARSON

At the bottom of this exclusive hardtop, solid floors and a beefy frame are supported by a rebuilt Competition Suspension that's both clean and lucid. The muscular 429 twists a close-ratio Toploader 4-speed, which spins a familiar 9-inch axle that's finished with a correct Traction-Lok differential and correct 3.50 gears. At the front of that top-option drivetrain, correct, optional power steering mixes surprisingly tight turns with responsive feedback. At the center of the correctly over sprayed floors, aluminized, true-dual exhaust utilizes fresh turbo mufflers and polished stainless tips to give the big engine a deep and throaty roar. At the corners of the car, correct power front disc and rear drum brakes supply quick and precise stops. And power meets the pavement through chromed Magnum 500s, which lap meaty G70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports.

THE QUEST FOR NEW OLD STOCK

This Cyclone's meticulous restoration was so thorough that the car's steward searched far and wide for the handmade, New Old Stock hides you see stretched tight in our high resolution photos. Officially called White Knit Vinyl, those buckets and bench ride a sea of clean carpet that's split by a stylish console and a requisite Hurst T-handle shifter. Front and center, a warp-free dash hangs Spoiler-spec telemetry, complete with a 140 MPH speedometer and an adjustable 8K RPM tachometer, between a correct AM/FM radio and bright side panels. The driver holds the road through a detailed Rim Blow Steering Wheel. And the passengers stow cargo in a fully restored trunk that features a correct jack and full-size spare tire.

When it comes to maximizing the amount of car your money will buy, you simply can't go wrong with unique Detroit muscle. A scant fraction of Mercury Cyclones were equipped as line-topping Spoilers. And when you consider that this Spoiler is fully documented and well restored, you have a head turning classic that's fun, historic AND rare. Looking for a stylish, comfortable, and reliable piece that commands a lot of respect on the show field and feels right at home on the highway? This hot hardtop is your hot ticket!
