Description

The classic car hobby is filled with high dollar museum pieces and awesome high performance street cars, but it's pretty rare to see an era correct hot rod like this 1957 Chevrolet 150. Built as a performance minded mechanic would've modified it in the late 1960s, this '57 Chevy is a cool old school performance car that packs a built 327, a high performance column shifted 3-speed gearbox and a no nonsense interior into a straight, rust free body.

Subtle is the name of the game with this Chevrolet 150 as it looks just as stock and factory correct as when it rolled off GM's Atlanta Georgia assembly line back in 1957. During a recent restoration, the cars straight and rust free body, which still maintains its factory panel alignment, was covered in GM code 793 Onyx Black, topped with GM code 617 India Ivory and then buffed to an excellent shine. The result is a smooth, high quality paint job that carries a lot of gloss and presents well under our RK Motors Charlotte showroom lights. At the front of the car, correct T3 headlights are housed in chrome '57 Chevrolet hoods with black detailing. Below those headlights, a heavy chrome stylized bumper displays a factory shine and serves to further emphasize the width of the car. Housed within that bumper is a stainless grille that carries a traditional chrome Chevrolet cross bar with clear integrated marker lights and a traditional '57 Chevrolet emblem that is in great condition. The edge of the hood features dent free chrome trim that sits below chrome “Chevrolet” script and traditional '57 Chevrolet 'spear bullets and spoons' that look brand new. Behind the hood, a new factory tinted windshield with a cool “Chevrolet Special Equipment” decal is cleared by the cars original stainless wipers and trimmed in a superb chrome frame. Unlike the '57 Bel Air, the side of the curvy 150 is all business featuring a small, detailed stainless trim piece along the ivory and black paint seam, good looking push button door handles, a chrome driver's side mirror and chrome front fender mounted “Chevrolet” scripts as its only ornamentation. At the back of the car, another new factory tinted window is trimmed in showroom fresh chrome and sits above rear fins that are capped in ridged stainless. Between those fins, the ivory white trunk features a fourth chrome “Chevrolet” script. And below those fins, clear tail lights sit in chrome housings above a second body width chrome bumper that incorporates a clear tag light.

Pop the hood and you'll find that this cars original motor has been swapped for a hotter '64 Corvette 327 that has been bored out to 332 cubic inches. At the top of that engine, two rebuilt 1958 Carter WCFB four barrel carburetors have been professionally tuned and are dressed with polished twin Corvette air cleaners, a correct fuel bowl and correct stainless fuel lines. Below those carburetors, an aluminum intake feeds double hump fuelie heads that wear authentic finned aluminum Corvette valve covers and feature new solid lifters and new push rods. Inside the block, a new steel crank pushes flat top pistons and a Duntov 30-30 camshaft opens the valves to allow exhaust to exit through NOS 'ram's horn' manifolds into a correct reproduction Ecklers 2 inch aluminized exhaust system. Behind the carburetor, a dual points distributor sends spark through black ultimate heat reduction wires. On the left side of the engine, you'll find an original equipment '57 generator, and on the right side of the engine, you'll find a correct reproduction Delco battery and a '57 Corvette fuel pump. In front of the motor, a new correct reproduction Desert Cooler heavy duty radiator keeps the temperature in check by circulating water through correct GM hoses. This authentic hot rod powerplant has roughly a 10.25 to 1 compression ratio, makes roughly 350 to 365 horsepower and has less than 500 miles of road time. The block has been painted the correct shade of Chevrolet Orange and the detailing is excellent, from the satin black radiator cradle to the body tag on the firewall.

The hot 327 is backed by a column shifted close ratio 3-speed transmission which features a 2.21 first gear ratio and has been professionally rebuilt with a 10.5 inch NOS clutch pack and NOS gears. Power flows from the transmission through a correctly marked OEM driveshaft to a professionally rebuilt 1962 date coded “P-Case” Posi-traction rear end. Inside that rear end you'll find tall 4.11 Richmond gears that are protected by a Timken seal and bearing kit and along with the professionally tuned carburetors, were hand chosen to pin you against the seat when your right foot meets the floor. That tweaked drivetrain is housed in a completely rebuilt suspension that, along with the car manual steering and brakes, has been completely returned to factory specifications. Above the suspension, solid floors are topped with authentic-appearing red oxide primer, just like the factory did it. Out back, a new stainless fuel tank sends fuel through new stainless lines and all hoses appear fresh and ready to hit the road. At the corners, white OEM 14 inch steel wheels feature correct reproduction small wheel covers and wear authentic looking 7.50-14 BF Goodrich Silvertown black wall tires.

Inside, the car features gray and black factory-style upholstery behind a black cowled and silver faced dash. Fresh seats are covered in black vinyl with cobblestone gray cloth inserts and feel firm to the touch. On the doors, stylish matching black and cobblestone gray door panels feature chrome door handles, chrome window cranks and chrome vent window handles. Below the seats new black loop carpet replaces original rubber flooring and is protected by black rubber mats with a cool colorized 50s Chevrolet emblems. Above you a tight gray headliner spans the entire roof and really serves to lighten up the interior to give it an airy 50s vibe. In front of the driver, the silver and black dash features embossed Chevrolet script, a correct rare option radio delete plate and the cars original gauges and warning lights. Below the silver gauge pod, a correct silver steering wheel sits in front of chrome controls for the cars accessories and features a chrome center cap with a '57 Chevrolet emblem. Behind the cockpit, a fully restored trunk features a correct mat, a wheel mounted spare tire and correct decals.

If you're not a fan of the flashy hot rods that dominate today's car shows, this 1957 Chevrolet 150 was built for you. It features serious go power under the hood, a manual transmission for shifting your own gears and a ton of hard to find and authentic pieces in a car that simply can't be duplicated for the asking price.
