Description

With a vast array of engines, an options list as long as your arm and stunning good looks, there are a lot of reasons to love the C2 Corvette. This 1966 coupe is a highly correct car that is a solid long term investment for someone who wants to enjoy it both on the road and at the show. Recently frame up restored, it wraps a numbers matching 427 big block and a correct M21 4-speed transmission into a package that will be the center of attention wherever it goes.

Frame up restored roughly two years ago, this Corvette presents much better than when it rolled out of GMs St. Louis assembly plant. The bodywork is very well done featuring better than factory body gaps, proper fitment of the doors and hood and an outstanding paint finish that glistens under our showroom lights. Originally painted in code 972 Ermine White, during the restoration the body was reworked and repainted in the Corvettes infamous code 976 Nassau Blue. At the front of the car, a body width grille features a new for 1966 grid design inside of show worthy stainless that is flanked by two chrome trimmed marker lights which look great and function perfectly. In front of the grille, an excellent looking razor sharp front bumper is integrated below the header panel and wraps around the corners of the car to meet the front wheel openings. Above the bumper, correct T3 headlights hide under blue headlight doors which sit on each side of a red, white and black Corvette C2 crossed flag emblem. At the front of the hood, a black and chrome “Corvette String Ray” emblem is mounted so that's its visible when the hood is tilted forward, and at the back of the hood, stainless windshield wipers clear like-new factory tinted glass that is framed in bright stainless trim. By the second generation of the Corvette, the cars profile had been molded into a much sportier and aggressive shape that was based on the original Mako Shark concept car. The front fenders rise above the hood line and feature vertical heat extractors that sit below pristine chrome C2 crossed flag emblems. Those emblems are inlayed with red, white and black and proudly announce the top option 427 Turbo Jet engine found under the hood. At the bottom of the doors, stainless rocker moldings sit above the car original optional side pipes which feature original modern looking stainless heat shields. At the rear of the car, two more high fenders sit below more factory tinted glass that is surrounded by more great looking stainless trim. A standard equipment chrome power antenna sits beside a chrome trimmed center mounted Corvette fuel filler and above another fresh black and chrome “Corvette Sting Ray” emblem. On the car's rear valence two traditional round Corvette tail lights and two correct convenience package optioned round reverse lights sit above a chrome trimmed tag bracket and two more chrome razor blade style bumpers.

During the recent restoration, the cars original, numbers matching engine was fully rebuilt to factory performance and appearance specifications. The block carries a casting code of 3869942, which certifies it as a 427 and an IP suffix code which confirms it is indeed an 11.1 compression ratio, 425 horsepower block that was cast in 1966. On top of the motor you'll find a correct open element air filter with a chrome top and a correct red “427 Turbo Jet” decal that, along with a stainless fuel line, feeds a new modern Holley 4 barrel carburetor. Under the new carburetor, the cars original Winter aluminum intake sits on a correct Chevrolet orange block between correct Chevrolet orange valve covers. Bolted to the sides of that orange block is the cars original exhaust manifolds which send gases into the cars original chambered side pipes. At the back of the engine, a new modern transistorized ignition has been added, but looks 100% factory with a chrome cover and braided sleeves on each of the plug wires. In front of the engine, a correct fan is spun by new V-belts and a correct replacement radiator sends and receives water through correct GM hoses with correct tower clamps. On the left side of the engine you'll find the cars original master cylinder, and on the right side of the engine there's a correct replacement Delco battery. Some modern parts have been added to the motor over the years including a mini starter, a new coil and an upgraded twist on oil filter.

During the restoration the chassis was fully restored, and it shows. Behind the motor is a close ratio M21 Muncie transmission that is branded with a 1965 casting number and could be the original unit, given this cars early build date. That Muncie sends power to a correct 3.70 Posi-Traction rear end which only needs a bit of pressure from the gas pedal to set the car into serious motion. Up front, the cars original double A-arm suspension presents well and features correct manual steering. Out back, the cars original independent rear suspension features a transversely mounted rear spring and has been expertly restored. Power disc brakes became standard equipment on the Corvette in 1965 and the brakes on this 1966 car look to have been fully rebuilt during the recent restoration. The floors have not been over-restored, but instead are covered in GM satin black and look as they would have when new. Rolling stock consists of 15-inch steel wheels with final year aluminum turbine style knock offs that are detailed in black. Mounted to those wheels is a set of authentic looking 205/75 BF Goodrich Silvertown radials with gold stripes.

During the restoration, a dark blue leather interior was added to replace the cars original saddle colored vinyl. The leather seats are flanked by new seatbelts and feel firm to the touch showing no signs of separation or ripping. Under the seats, fresh looking light blue carpet runs from the dash to the rear storage area and is protected by color matched carpeted floor mats. In front of the driver, a stylish and sporty blue dual cowl dash houses black and silver trimmed bezel with a large tachometer, a large speedometer and gauges for the cars vitals. In front of the passenger, the dash houses a new locking glove box behind an attractive stainless panel with a chrome “Corvette Sting Ray” emblem. The middle of the dash is trimmed in stainless and flows like a waterfall to the center console while housing a correct radio and a new continuous motion electric clock. Beside the seats, good looking door panels feature blue armrests and bright stainless that has aged well since the restoration. Connecting the driver to the car is an optional telescoping steering column that holds an optional wood and aluminum Rally steering wheel, and a correct chrome shifter that springs up from the center console. Above the seats a daytime/nighttime adjustable rear view mirror sits at the front of a tight blue headliner that doesn't feel weathered or brittle at all.

Quite honestly, they don't get much better than this expertly restored 1966 Sting Ray coupe. It's a highly correct car that you can drive and enjoy while racking up trophies. Best of all, with a fresh restoration and an original numbers matching 427, this Corvette is only going to increase in value. Call today!
