Restored Bluefire Metallic Duster 340 V8 4 Speed
The key to successful marketing is finding a catchy slogan that people notice, remember and sometimes even recite. It doesn't really matter what product you're selling or even if the slogan refers to an unhappy consequence; if you can grab your audience's attention in an entertaining way, you money has been well spent. With that in mind I like to play a game where I take negative consequence slogans and turn them into positive marketing tools. For example our latest offering, this super cool 1972 Plymouth Duster, could push its road ready 340/4-speed drivetrain by transforming the classic “no shoes, no shirt, no service” into “no stress, no hassle, no worries”. Then, of course, its razor-sharp blue on white color combination could be highlighted by turning “click it or ticket” into “jaunt it and flaunt it.” And naturally, the car's awesome $34K price tag could rehabilitate “booze it and lose it” into “muse it and lose it.” Okay, okay… I admit that marketing slogans aren't my biggest strength. But one thing is certain: this fast, fully-sorted and very inexpensive Duster is an awful lot of fun wrapped up in a killer blue package. If you're a hardcore Mopar fan who wants a smoking hot A-body to cruise around in and shred tires with, you've found your next car!
Much more impressive than when it originally rolled down Chrysler's storied assembly lines this slick Plymouth coupe has been transformed into a take-no-prisoners street warrior that consistently knocks people out at cruise nights. You won't be staying under the radar with its professionally finished Bluefire Metallic and white paintwork, which has been applied over a very clean body. There are no signs of wholesale panel replacement, suggesting this was a straight, rust-free car before its metamorphosis. Not surprisingly, panel gaps are good enough to make its installed stripes line up exactly right. And overall, the car is so well done that many unsuspecting bystanders will be fooled into thinking this is how it rolled right out of the showroom.
The Duster, Chrysler's sporty competitor for the Chevy Nova and Ford Maverick, resulted from the Plymouth division's desire to use allotted 1970 restyling money for something more exciting than their usual two and four-door Valiants. At the front of the car a textured, body-width grille centers two large parking lights between two larger headlights, an original chrome bumper and a traditional black chin spoiler. Above that grille, the car's flat hood props a small “PLYMOUTH” script, a large “340 WEDGE” decal and an even larger snorkel scoop in front of scratch-free glass that's cleared by satin finished wipers, framed by well-maintained stainless trim and capped by a bright white top. Below that glass sculpted body panels, which add an unmistakable 70s flavor to the car's vintage design, are detailed with correct, new-for-1972 surface-mount marker lights. Between those marker lights, bold “DUSTER” fender stripes combine with slick fender mounted turn signal indicators to perfectly complement traditional chrome door handles and a stylish driver's mirror. And at the back of the car, a white valence hangs a centered “DUSTER 340” script between broad tail lights, a second original bumper and traditional stainless exhaust tips.
If you're going to talk the talk, you'd better be ready to walk the walk. A flashy muscle car without guts is about as appealing as a firecracker without gun powder or a gallon of sweet tea without sugar. Fortunately the power-hungry gearheads at our own RKM Performance Center have ensured this Duster will never miss a beat by completely rebuilding, and fully tuning, its hot 340 cubic inch V8. At the top of the car's light blue block a Weber 4-barrel carburetor funnels wind from a chrome, open element air cleaner into a high quality Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake manifold. At the sides of that intake, attractive aluminum valve covers cap original 340 heads and free-flowing full length headers. Behind those valve covers, sparks are sequences from an MSD Blaster II coil to MSD Street Fire plug wires via a traditional points distributor. In front of those plug wires fresh V-belts spin a large chrome alternator above a leak-free power steering pump. And in front of that alternator a heavy duty Chrysler radiator circulates water through new rubber hoses. This Duster's clean engine bay is a nice combination of form and function featuring a reproduction Mopar green cap battery, an authentic Chrysler washer fluid tank, a fresh brake booster and a rebuilt 2-speed wiper motor. Everything from the car's fenders to its firewall is coated in the same excellent looking Bluefire Metallic paint as its glossy exterior panels. And when you twist its key, the fresh V8 makes low profile cruising literally impossible.
In the late 60s and early 70s, if you were a true Mopar guy, the only transmission you wanted was a factory-issued A833 4-speed; and the 23 spline unit in this bright compact is tough enough for the track and smooth enough for the parkway! Naturally that high performance engine and transmission combination feeds a fully sorted front torsion bar and rear leaf suspension that's shackled to a correct power steering system and a rugged factory rear end. Cool and confident stops are provided by power discs up front and power drums out back. Exhaust flows down the center of the car through true dual pipes that run to perennially mean Flowmaster dual chamber mufflers and traditional stainless tips. Above all that impressive hardware, solid floors have been properly undercoated instead of polished in a nice shade of body-matched basecoat like so many over-restored Mopars that roll through our showroom. At the corners of those floors, traditional 15 inch Cragar S/S wheels spin 235/65 front and 235/70 rear Firestone Indy 500 tires around fresh chrome lug nuts. And a thorough examination of all the car's bushings, lines and hoses ensures it has road going reliability to matches its eyeball-popping curb appeal.
According to this Plymouth's original fender tag it was factory-equipped with a conservative black interior. But, if you're like me and prefer your muscle cars flashy, you'll definitely appreciate the contrast of its blue paint and retrofitted white seats. Speaking of seats, this car's benches are firm to the touch and feature pliable white covers that show very little weathering. At the bottom of those seats, fade-free black carpet is protected by color-keyed floor mats; and in front of those seats, a chrome Hurst pistol grip shifter is perfectly positioned for quick burnouts and swift gear rotation. The car's warp-free, padded dash hangs Plymouths trademark square speedometer and an old school Chrysler Solid State AM radio in a broad swath of wood applique. In front of the driver, a simple black steering wheel spins a large diameter rim around a small Sunpro oil pressure gauge. At the sides of the seats, pleated door panels hang bright chrome hardware between blue door frames, straight stainless trim, unique “DUSTER” emblems and stain-free armrests. And behind the cockpit, two large Roadmaster speakers hang over a fully restored trunk that's complete with a correct mat and correct decklid decals.
The sale of this not-so-subtle Plymouth includes an original owner's manual and a cam spec card.
It's not just hype when we say you need to call right away on this awesome Duster. Well-built, compact Mopars are just good, clean fun; and every time we put a reasonably priced example in our showroom, our phones start ringing off the hook. Take a good, long look at the body, drivetrain and interior on this Duster. There's just no way you could build something like this yourself and not significantly overshoot our $34K price. Best of all, this car has been tweaked, massaged and sorted into a turnkey cruiser by the professionals at our own RKM Performance Center. Don't be that guy who calls late and asks: “Is it really sold?” Pick up the phone and call now!
