1 of 1,152 AMC SC/Rambler 390 V8 4 speed "Type A" paint scheme
There are cars that ought to be represented in any serious car collection, and if muscle is how you roll, the limited-edition Hurst-modified American Motors SC/Rambler is one of them. The car here is one of only 379 known on the model's registry today, with just 1,152 produced during the single model season, 1969. Those who know recall that AMC had little interest in performance, even after absorbing Studebaker, until the AMX proved popular. For 1969, the brand went to Hurst Industries for a packaged performance “budget muscle car.” The result was the baddest Rambler to ever emerge from Kenosha. Under the special factory snorkel-scoop hood is an X-code 390/315 HP V-8 American Motors engine, which features a 4-barrel carburetor that sealed to the hood, heavy duty cooling parts, chrome dress-ups and dual exhaust. This is, in turn, backed by a 4-speed manual transmission that came with a heavy-duty clutch, Hurst shift linkage and a T-handle shifter. The Twin-Grip differential here used a 3.54:1 final gear ratio, assisted by rear axle torque links, and the car has power front disc brakes, heavy-duty suspension and upgraded steering parts.
This is a well preserved restoration that has the trademark Type A paint scheme, which was sort of the “in-your-face” response to the brand's oft-mentioned stoicism. Large patches of red on the sides were accented by a wide blue arrow pointing to the scoop and 390 displacement callouts then continuing across the roof and onto the decklid. It was distinctly American Motors in many ways, with exclusive Hurst SCRambler tags on each fender. “Charcoal” black vinyl abounds inside, with adjustable seats featuring special headrests, auxiliary underdash gauges, a column-mounted Sun Tach, a pushbutton AM radio and a three-spoke sport steering wheel. The final touches were 14-inch blue-painted wheels with AM chrome center caps and BFGoodrich Silvertown radial redline tires. Road testers found out the cars were a lot of fun, and their legacy continued whenever they made appearances at the stoplight drags. This opportunity to join the fun awaits you.
