Body Off Frame Restored Malibu SS Restomod 383ci V8 Stroker Automatic A/C
By 1964, Chevrolet had cracked the code with the Malibu SS…a stylish, well-proportioned coupe that marked the beginning of the Chevelle era and set the stage for some of the most iconic muscle cars ever built. Clean lines, a full-size feel with mid-size agility, and an emerging appetite for V8 performance made it an instant classic. This particular example benefits from a previous frame-off restoration and was more recently sorted and refreshed in 2022 and 2023 under new ownership. Today, finding a real-deal '64 SS that's been taken down to bare metal and brought back with this level of care is something special. That's exactly what this car delivers: factory pedigree, meticulous execution, and a level of finish that gives it muscle car presence with a modern edge.
This Malibu SS started life as a complete and straight factory Super Sport shell, and was treated to a full, frame-off restoration with an emphasis on detail and drivability. The body was stripped to bare metal, with all panels removed, prepped, and reinstalled after hours of careful blocking and alignment. Panel gaps were dialed in evenly, and the car was then resprayed in a rich, dark blue metallic pulled from the Jaguar color palette. The color plays beautifully in the light, offering a pearlescent sheen that shifts between deep navy and electric blue depending on the lighting and angle. It's subtle but striking, a perfect match for the car's clean profile and balanced stance. A chrome cowl adds just enough contrast, while traditional trim and 15” chrome American Racing 5-spoke wheels keep the attitude grounded in muscle car heritage.
Under the hood is a 383 cubic inch stroker V8 breathing through a Holley 4-barrel carb and long-tube headers. The engine bay walks the line between show and go, with polished valve covers and a matching air cleaner lid, plus a polished A/C compressor and alternator mounted on a Front Runner drive system. An aluminum radiator with electric fan keeps everything cool and is topped by a custom pinstriped cover that adds visual punch. Power flows through a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission to a 10-bolt rear axle with 3.31 gears and posi. A Hotchkis 4 link rear suspension ties it all together, with front coil springs, and power disc brakes at all four corners…all mounted on a painted chassis. A Borgeson close-ratio power steering box gives it confident road feel, while dual FlowMaster mufflers provide the right bark when you lean into the throttle.
Inside, the SS cabin has been mildly customized with a hot rod flair that complements the exterior's clean execution. Traditional vinyl bucket seats and a rear bench keep the period-correct vibe, while a custom center console adds practical touches like cupholders and added storage. A B&M Quick Silver shifter offers crisp engagement, and Dakota Digital Retrotech gauges sit in the factory-style dash panel, blending modern function with classic design. The dash is painted to match the body and finished with tasteful white and red pinstriping for a subtle custom touch. A trio of under-dash auxiliary gauges adds to the driver-focused layout. Comfort and tech come courtesy of a Vintage Air climate system and a Custom Autosound head unit with Bluetooth capability, paired to Sony Xplod speakers. A tilt column and 3-spoke sport wheel complete the cabin.
This Malibu SS strikes a perfect balance between original style and modern performance. It's the kind of car that rewards you whether you're pulling into a cruise-in or dropping down a gear for some spirited acceleration. It sounds mean, drives tame, and delivers a ton of value for a real-deal SS that's been done right from the ground up.
