1966 Ford Mustang Convertible 302ci V8 Automatic Upgraded Suspension A/C
This 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible has remained with its third owner for the past 22 years, during which time it was thoughtfully restored and tastefully updated to enhance drivability without sacrificing its classic character. The restoration was completed by Norwood Wooding of Wooding's Auto Body Works in Roanoke, Virginia, with the paint and bodywork finished in 2013. Finished in Wimbledon White over a blue interior, this Mustang also benefits from a 302ci V8 overhaul performed by Highlands Machine of Covington, Virginia, in 2013, with receipts on file.
The body was refinished in its timeless Wimbledon White color by Wooding's Auto Body Works, giving the convertible a clean, factory-inspired presentation that complements the updated mechanical package. The convertible top was retrimmed using upgraded modern material that provides improved insulation and a quieter cabin with the top raised. The lowered stance has been subtly improved, complemented by a set of 17" Billet Specialties wheels that provide a tasteful contemporary appearance without straying from the Mustang's original design.
Power comes from a 302 cubic-inch V8 equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and backed by a Ford 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission. Power is delivered through a Ford 8-inch rear axle fitted with 3.80 gears. The engine was overhauled by Highlands Machine in 2013. An aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan supports the cooling system. The chassis has been upgraded with a Heidts Mustang II front suspension with tubular control arms and sway bar, complemented by 2-inch lowering rear leaf springs and power rack-and-pinion steering. Braking is handled by power-assisted front disc brakes, while the combination of 3.80 gearing and the overdrive transmission provides responsive acceleration with relaxed highway cruising.
Inside, the Mustang retains its inviting blue standard interior highlighted by a factory-style front bench seat paired with a floor-mounted shifter. A billet three-spoke steering wheel, Dakota Digital instrument system, and digital AM/FM/Aux head unit provide thoughtfully integrated updates while preserving the cabin's classic character. Modern air conditioning enhances comfort, making the Mustang well suited for warm-weather cruising.
A carefully selected collection of mechanical upgrades make this 1966 Mustang Convertible an appealing example for enthusiasts seeking a classic Mustang that is equally comfortable on weekend cruises or extended road trips. Its conservative approach to modernization preserves the car's unmistakable character while delivering the reliability, comfort, and driving manners expected of a thoughtfully executed restomod.
