Description

If you're a Ford fan, you've undoubtedly noticed the plethora of high quality Mustangs we've featured over the past 6 months. From our authentic 1968 Shelby GT500KR to the brutal Boss 557 we just sold in a little less than five days, RK Motors Charlotte is working hard to become your number one source for top notch Ford pony cars. But with prices of documented collector cars and serious pro-touring builds climbing faster than a P-51 in a dog fight, owning one of these high dollar pieces can be more nerve racking than it is fun. That's why the smart hobbyist who likes driving and enjoying his hardware buys a slick, fully sorted weekend cruiser like this 1966 Mustang GT. With a fire-breathing small block 289 under the hood, an awesome full restoration that was complete just last year, and exceptional attention to detail, THIS CAR is the ultimate drivable dream!

Take one glance at this '66 Mustang's super slick body and you'll see what high quality craftsmanship that is performed by a dedicated group of individuals truly looks like. Those individuals work at a place called CHL Motorsports Inc. here in Charlotte, North Carolina; and according to the book that's included with the sale (yes, there really is a book), this solid Mustang was stripped to bare metal, thoroughly reworked and transformed from a tired old mare that lived in a gray stable into the thoroughbred race horse you see today. After some intense labor and high quality detail work resulted in excellent fit and finish, the canvas was as close to perfect as possible and a smooth and glossy coat of black urethane paint was sealed in a durable clearcoat shell, accented with laser straight gold decals and buffed to a fantastic shine. The result is one sinister looking muscle car which mixes the classic design of a first generation Mustang with the modern build techniques of a top notch restoration shop to truly put the FUN in “America's Favorite Fun Car”.

It's obvious that Ford has always sweated the details on the Mustang; and with its completely new brightwork and bolt-on pieces, this car presents a finished, high quality appearance that goes far beyond its nice paint and fresh decals. Up front, a fully functional hood scoop sits above a stainless grille which hangs a pristine corralled pony emblem between intricately detailed fog lights. At the top of that grille, stainless hood pins provide a little added security on the strip. At sides of that grille, deep set headlights cap aggressive, ridged fenders. And below that grille a show-worthy chrome bumper hangs above wide-set chrome trimmed parking lights. At the top of the car, like-new glass is framed by bright stainless trim, slick chrome race mirrors and new stainless wipers. And at the sides of the car, traditional Mustang GT ornamentation perfectly complements brand new door handles and awesome, mesh filled custom side scoops. At the back of the car, glossy peaked fenders frame factory fresh segmented tail lights and a highly detailed Mustang GT fuel cap. And a second showroom fresh chrome bumper hangs above traditional chrome trimmed reverse lights, chrome trimmed stainless exhaust tips which are integrated into the car's rear valence and a chrome tag bracket.

With the body finished and the rest of the project well underway, it was time to find a suitable powerplant; and given this Mustangs predisposition to both class and muscle, a bolt in strip motor wouldn't quite do the trick. Pull the pins on the solid steel hood and you'll find a 289 cubic inch Ford V8 which has been rebuilt, beefed up and bathed in a sweet coat of bright blue paint. At the top of the engine, a correctly decaled chrome air cleaner, which is fitted with a cool Ford wing nut, feeds a chrome Holley 4-barrel carburetor that sits just below the cars fully functional hood scoop. At the base of that carburetor, an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake is bolted between Edelbrock Performer aluminum heads which have been equipped with PRW rocker arms and covered with finned aluminum Cobra valve covers. In front of those heads, a reliable points distributor sends fire through black Taylor Spiro Pro plug wires which snake along billet aluminum wire looms that are bolted above ceramic coated long tube headers. And at the front of the block, new V-belts spin a fresh alternator below a chrome aftermarket AC compressor. Cooling is provided by a new aluminum radiator which comes complete with correct FoMoCo hoses. And dino juice is provided by polished stainless fuels lines which bridge the gap between fresh hoses and the big four barrel carburetor. Aesthetically, the great sounding small block sits in a completely restored engine bay which has been sprayed traditional flat black. And nice pieces like correct decals, a correct FoMoCo washer fluid bag and trick stainless wire tubes provide the visual punch to match the cars highly detailed exterior panels.

What would an excellent restoration be without a great foundation? Take a look under this Mustang and you'll find solid, flat black floors that are highlighted by a lot of fresh paint and some serious performance hardware. Behind the hot 289, a rebuilt C4 3-speed automatic transmission, which has been equipped with a TCI torque converter, turns a tried and true Ford rear end. At the ends of the car, a restored double A-arm front and rear leaf spring suspension, which includes a factory front sway bar, an aftermarket rear sway bar, Bilstein rear shocks and aftermarket traction bars, maximizes the cars launch and handling characteristics. And at the corners of the car, manual front disc and rear drum brakes provide firm, fade-free stops. Step on the throttle and a fresh stainless fuel tank supplies gas to fresh stainless fuel lines while the ceramic coated headers hurl exhaust into a mandrel bent true dual system which breathes through an H-Pipe crossover and aggressive dual chamber Flowmaster mufflers. Power is put to the pavement by great looking 15 inch chrome Ford Mustang wheels that are wrapped in fresh 215/60 Mastercraft Sensys 01 tires. And everything under this car from its stainless hardware to its slick finned aluminum Cobra oil pan is fully sorted and ready to go!

Open the door to this pristine '66 Mustang and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that mixes the best elements of the 'Pony Interior' with standard black vinyl that provides an exceptionally attractive starting point. The factory bucket seats wear new pleated Pony covers between two piece lap belts and new chrome hardware; and the like-new dual cowl dash pad looks like it came straight out of the box yesterday morning. Inside that dash, a traditional black instrument panel holds a full assortment of fully rebuilt gauges between new chrome knobs for the cars accessories and a direct fit aftermarket cassette player. And below that dash, a stylish black and silver center console props a traditional chrome T-handle shifter just behind vents for the cars heat and air conditioning system. At the sides of the car, layered door panels are decorated with pristine stainless trim, new chrome handles for the doors and windows and fully functional courtesy lights. And at the bottom of the car, new black carpet is protected by heavy duty, Mustang branded floor mats. A factory black headliner stretches from the front of the car to its fully restored and correctly finished trunk. And in front of the driver, an impressive chrome spoked and wood trimmed steering wheels spins in front of a slick column mounted tachometer and continuous motion electric clock.

Included with the sale of this awesome Mustang is a reproduction owner's manual, a literal book of restoration photos and receipts, a few old registration cards and some paperwork for the cars TCI torque converter.

There's simply nothing like keying up a legendary muscle car. The sound, the feeling of the idle, and the relentless surge of torque as you power through the gears. It's very rare to find a paint shop fresh, well-executed restoration which carries an asking price of roughly half what the car cost to build, but this Mustang is exactly that. And if you're looking for a highly desirable muscle car that will provide you years of weekend fun, and rack up more than its fair share of fans and trophies in the process, it's your kind of car!
