Description

If ever there was a true German muscle car, BMW's E63 M6 is it. As the brand's flagship combination of power, comfort and handling, it received many accolades and won diehard fans around the globe. In terms of relative size, price and performance, the M6 really had no competition; and with its unbeatable combination of white glove amenities and Formula One bloodlines, it provided the ownership experience of a lifetime. This 2007 M6 combines a rev-happy 500 horsepower V10 with a sophisticated aluminum suspension and an athletic 6-speed manual transmission to become the ULTIMATE expression of the ultimate driving machine.

There's just something about a black BMW that conveys the perfect combination of aggressive performance and excellent driving dynamics. This 2007 E63 M6 coupe wears a great looking coat of original Black Sapphire Metallic paint that has been babied and protected since it was new. While the base 6-series coupe is more exciting than its 5-series sedan stable mate, it's still rather conservatively designed to appeal to a wide range of buyers. BMW knew that a more dramatic appearance would be needed when they dusted off their legendary M badge; and according, the M6 you see here is equipped with a host of visual upgrades that, while significant, flow extremely well with its already impressive design theme.

At the front of the car, a deeper front valence swaps standard 6-series fog lights for wider air intakes which help cool the cars big engine. Above those intakes, traditional chrome BMW 'kidney grilles' are centered between a pristine BMW propeller emblem and swiveling Xenon headlights with small built in washers. Behind those headlights, thermoplastic front fenders border inward and outward creases that define the cars lightweight aluminum hood; and aluminum doors sit below pristine factory glass that's capped by a great looking reinforced carbon fibre roof panel. At the sides of the car, more aggressive rocker sills complement aerodynamic side mirrors and cool looking “M6” emblems hint at the Z8 production and Z9 GT concept cars that inspired the design. Behind the factory glass, a second showroom fresh propeller emblem rides above a bright “M6” badge on a ridged aluminum trunk lid that visually relate this slick M6 to its more expensive 7-series relatives. At the sides of that trunk, clear LED tail lights hang above a re-styled rear bumper that incorporates traditional quad outlet stainless BMW M exhaust tips at the sides of a rear air diffuser.

Fortunately for red-blooded car guys everywhere, one pull of the hood latch is all it takes to throw the 'all business' black tie subtlety of this car's sleek exterior right out the driver's window. Perfectly wedged between the fenders is BMW's Formula One inspired 5.0 liter S85 V10 engine that's good for a super car slaying 500 horsepower and 380 lb./ft. of torque. Designed as a high-revving engine which utilizes a wide power band to create over 100 horsepower per liter, it features a 12 to 1 compression ratio and an astonishing 8,250 RPM redline. Hardware includes a cast aluminum block, a forged steel crank, oil cooled Mahle Motorsport forged aluminum pistons, variable valve timing, ten individually controlled throttle butterflies, a quasi-dry sump lubricating system and four valve per cylinder cast aluminum heads with CNC machined ports and combustion chambers. However, despite the host of track proven upgrades, none of this car's traditional BMW silk and smoothness has been compromised, and it's a very well-mannered executive express until your right foot outweighs your better judgment. Based on appearance, the engine compartment has been meticulously maintained and everything from the “BMW V10” branded engine cover to the fresh hoses and spotless battery terminals shows no signs of heat damage or weathering.

Naturally, a powerhouse like the S85 V10 needs a whole lot of top notch hardware to back it up. The M6 was originally equipped with only a 7-speed sequential manual slushbox. But luckily, more performance-minded people got their way and the 2007 model year saw a traditional Getrag 6-speed manual added to the options sheet. That slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission sends power to a limited slip differential which combines the car's excellent 50/50 weight distribution with a driver-selectable responsive suspension for confident launches and quick acceleration. That electronically controlled suspension is comprised of a Macpherson strut front and multi-link rear four wheel independent set up which utilizes dynamic stability control, traction control and fully electronic brake distribution to turn this already serious performer into a curve carving track monster. Braking is supplied by four ventilated discs that are clamped by large black calipers via a standard anti-lock system. And the final piece of the performance upgrade package is a set of positively gorgeous machined aluminum 19 inch BMW “M” branded wheels that wear 255/40 front and 285/35 rear Nitto Invos performance radials.

Inside the car it's all about traditional 'old world' luxury, with black leather buckets, acres of walnut trim and every electronic option BMW could think of built into their famous iDrive system. The supple leather covering the seats shows hardly any wear at all, and the stitched leather covering the dash and sculpted door panels is still as tight and conditioned as when it left the factory. Inside that tight leather, crisp gauges allow the driver to keep an eye on vitals and a centered iDrive screen handles essentially all of the cars other functions through one large silver button. In front of that button, a slick “M” branded shifter sits below knobs for the cars dual zone climate control and a MP3 compatible 13 speaker Harmon/Kardon premium sound system with two subwoofers and a DVD player. At the top of the car a suede headliner conveys an added sense of style and comfort while in front of the driver, a leather wrapped tilt and telescoping steering wheel carries a bright BMW propeller above the coveted “M” logo. The usual assortment of luxury appointments and convenience features are all present and accounted for including major items such as: navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, front and rear parking assist, cruise control, power heated seats with memory settings, power accessories, heated mirrors, an electrochromatic rearview mirror and a full array of airbags.

Highly civilized and extremely potent, this BMW M6 is a no-compromises exercise in high-end German performance. Still luxurious where it matters, with serious performance upgrades underneath, it will surprise almost any exotic car on the road without degrading ride quality or driver comfort. Reliable, streetable and poised to become a future classic, this 500 horsepower BMW coupe truly is the ultimate driving machine.
