Description

A quick look through automotive history reveals that the 'bigger is better' horsepower of the late 60s had begun to transform into 'bigger is better' luxury appointments by the early 70s. Maybe it was the increasing age of new car buyers, maybe it was Detroit's need to make a profit on something besides performance in the face of increasing government regulations; or maybe it was just our culture's renewed emphasis on style during a decade that gave birth to phenomenon such as glam rock and disco. Whatever the case may be, cars like this 1970 Ford Galaxie 500 survivor combined the stump pulling torque of their muscle car forbearers with increased luxury and enough room to comfortably parade half of the neighborhood down Main Street. And today, with only 46,493 original miles on its odometer, this cool old cruiser is not only a reliable and exceptionally comfortable place to spend the summer sightseeing, it's also a vintage piece of Americana that will be welcome at virtually every classic car show in town. So, if you're looking for some vintage metal that's stylish, powerful and has a lot of history, who says you have to buy a cramped, high maintenance muscle car? This awesome Galaxie 500 will look just as cool rolling down the road, turn just as many heads at the local drive in and, thanks to a thorough shakedown by our RK Motors Charlotte service department, is ready to provide you with miles of carefree cruising!

Assembled at Ford's Chicago, Illinois manufacturing facility in May of 1970, this pristine Ford Galaxie 500 survivor was originally shipped to Paul Heuring Motors in Hobart, Indiana and sold to Ray Eggers of nearby Valparaiso, Indiana. Since that sunny summer day 42 years ago, it has led a pampered three owner life that, judging by its mostly original Green Metallic paint, was free of exposure to inclement weather, significant wet road driving and long-term outside storage. Today, the car is in overall outstanding condition displaying a glossy finish that is characterized by an excellent shine; and factory accurate panel alignment which creates surprisingly narrow gaps and solid closing doors.

If you take a close look at the racy profile of this Galaxie 500 SportsRoof, you can easily see how much it emulates the classic lines of the first generation Mustang. And that progression in the car's design only seemed logical as Ford's full-size heavy weight battled Chevrolet's Impala everywhere from the driveways of mature, near luxury buyers to the two lanes of thrill seeking back roads drag racers. At the front of the car, a straight, body-width aluminum grille hangs four pristine headlights at the sides of a modernist Ford emblem. Below that grille, a great looking chrome bumper props pristine chrome guards between clear, square parking lights; and at the top of that grille, a super long hood props a traditional Ford crown ornament on centered power dome sculpting. At the top of the car, fully tinted glass is framed in a combination of well-maintained original stainless, showroom fresh reproduction stainless and a like-new textured vinyl roof which is in excellent condition and shows no signs of tearing or cracking. And at the sides of the car, show quality stainless wheel lips complement great looking stainless rocker moldings, correct chrome rearview mirrors, traditional chrome door handles, and color-keyed bodyside moldings that are still fresh and pliable. At the back of the car, broad fenders flow into clear, chrome trimmed brake lights which ride above another factory fresh chrome bumper that is complete with matching chrome guards and clear, square reverse lamps. And a pristine “Galaxie 500” decklid emblem hangs above a straight, Galaxie 500 exclusive rear valence.

Providing the motivation for this all-business blue oval bruiser is a 390 cubic inch, numbers matching Ford FE 2-valve big block which, by 1970, pushed out 265 horsepower a whopping 390 ft./lb. of torque! Cast on May (E) 6th (6) of 1970 (0), and designed to go head to head with Chevrolet's less powerful 409, the 390 in this Galaxie's engine bay is factory fresh, highly original, and exceptionally clean. In fact, the only non-original pieces are a new Edelbrock aluminum intake, a new 4-barrel Edelbrock Performer carburetor and a nice set of blue MSD Heli-core plug wires. And if you're the kind of purist that demands all the right parts in all the right places, the car's original cast iron intake and 2-barrel carburetor ARE included with the sale. Naturally, corporate Ford Blue paint covers the big engine all the way from its single snorkel air cleaner to its original oil pan. All the major service items are in 100% functional condition, including the factory air conditioning. And the engine bay has excellent presentation throughout, featuring correct markings, correct decals and an incredibly tidy appearance that reflects the high level of care and maintenance this car received from day one. Jump in the driver's seat, turn the key and hit the road because this big Ford engine, from its stamped “Power by Ford” valve covers to its finned Spectre fuel filter, is fully sorted and ready for miles of carefree cruising!

For 1970, the Galaxie line was engineered with Ford's reliable and sturdy C6 3-speed automatic transmission and a traditional Ford nine inch rear end that's filled with mild 2.75 gears which provide effortless high-speed highway cruising. And this well optioned Galaxie 500 is still equipped with its original PGA-A4 tagged Select-Shift Cruise-O-Matic which means you can either let its smooth C6 take you down the road on its own or, if you're feeling spirited, row yourself through the gears via a built in manual mode. Trust me, you've never experienced highway cruising unless you've been in a car like this! With its smooth ride, huge torque band and smooth shifting transmission, this Galaxie is built for long highway trips and cross country adventures. Its undercarriage, like its engine bay, is clean, honest and certainly not to the point where anyone should be afraid to put this car either on the road or on a lift. The computer tuned boxed frame rolls a sturdy three link rear suspension, which is complete with freshened air shocks, aft of a good looking double A-arm front suspension which has been fitted with new shocks, new tie rod ends, new bushings and new ball joints courtesy of our first rate RK Motors Charlotte Service facility. Stops are provided by correct power front discs and rear drums. Turns come easily thanks to factory correct power steering. And exhaust is handled by a true dual system which pipes gases through two nice sounding turbo mufflers. Finishing this fully sorted undercarriage of is a set of fresh 235/70/15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As which spin classic Ford turbine hub caps that are complete with upscale maroon centers.

Take a look inside this Galaxie 500 and you'll find a plush and roomy interior which is as luxury oriented as any mainline automaker could manage in 1970. That means high quality knitted vinyl seats, thick loop pile nylon carpets, new-for-1970 Uni-lock seatbelts, and even a remote left hand mirror. The original front and rear bench seats are in excellent, unblemished condition showing little to no wear at all; and feature enough leg and elbow room to parade around you and your extended family. Below those seats like-new black carpet, which is protected by color-keyed mats, holds its color very well and certainly looks much more upscale than the squeaky rubber floor that would've been standard equipment just a few years earlier. At the sides of those seats, padded door panels hang fade-free wood applique above large armrests that are complete with chrome handles, and chrome window cranks which roll all four side windows down to create a true pillarless hard top. And above those seats, a black headliner, which is anchored by a chrome trimmed dome light, appears as fresh and tight as the day it rolled out of the showroom. In front of the driver, Ford's 'swept-away' dash, which centers all the car's instrumentation in a console-like, wood trimmed binnacle to provide maximum room for front passengers, displays no cracks or fading; and holds an original Philco AM radio above controls for the car's heat and air conditioning system, an original two-spoke steering wheel and a chrome transmission shifter. And behind the cockpit, a well-preserved trunk features an original mat, a correct jack and a full-size spare tire. It really is amazing how well this interior has been preserved; all plastics are in excellent, un-cracked condition and the wood appliques and silver trim throughout is sharp and lustrous with no sun damage.

Included with the sale of this awesome Galaxie 500 is two original dealer invoices, an original window sticker, an original title application, an original owner's manual, 1970 Ford dealer brochures, maintenance receipts, product information for the modern Edelbrock intake and carburetor, and the afore mentioned original intake and 2-barrel carburetor.

The 70s were a unique decade for America's automakers, and their products are an accurate reflection of that time period. Large and in charge, these cars combine the killer torque of the muscle car era with an upscale level of comfort and far-ranging spaciousness that has all but died out in today's automotive market. When it comes to maximizing the amount of car your money will buy, you simply can't go wrong with a big, 70s era Detroit cruiser. And this cool Galaxie 500 survivor is a stylish, comfortable, and reliable piece that will still command a lot of respect on the highway or at the local car show!
