Description

You gotta love the F1 Camaro! As the cleanest of GM's five generations of pony cars, it was Chevrolet's spot-on reaction to the original Mustang which tossed 100 octane racing fuel onto a rivalry that's still burning strong. Today, when it comes to investment grade classics, you simply can't go wrong with a numbers matching first generation Z/28. And, since RK Motors Charlotte retails more first-rate Z/28s than anyone in the world, you've certainly come to the right place! Fresh out of a top notch rotisserie restoration, this 1968 Z/28 Rally Sport is the perfect car for any enthusiast who wants a show stopping combination of classic muscle and old school style. If you're in the market for a showroom fresh collector car that you can enjoy on weekends and make a little money on down the road, this Z/28 is exactly what you've been looking for!

We'll begin with a look at this Camaro's cowl tag and VIN number to confirm the accuracy of its restoration and VIN stamped powertrain components.

Take a close look at the pictures of this striking 1968 Camaro and you'll find a car which is completely accurate to how it rolled off of GM's Norwood, Ohio assembly line. Its body is straight and clean from any angle; and great care was taken to ensure that its solid, dent-free panels exhibit correct fit and finish, all its gaps are narrow, and all its moving parts function correctly. On top of that spectacular body, GM code U LeMans Blue glistens under expertly stenciled Z/28 rally stripes which have been sealed in a thick clearcoat shell and buffed to a brilliant shine. The result is a serious competition Camaro which sets a very high standard for any other pony cars that dare show their faces on the show field!

At the front of the car, a stainless trimmed Rally Sport grille frames a centered and vertically oriented “RS” emblem between correctly functioning Rally Sport headlights. Below those headlights, an option D80 SCCA Trans Am style front spoiler, which is supported by correct brace bars, props clear square parking lights at the base of a show worthy, body-width chrome bumper. At the sides of the car, great looking standard stainless rocker trim, which has been modified to follow the bottom accent lines of the cars panels, combines with dent-free stainless fender trim, chrome GM door handles and a chrome driver's side mirror to provide some much needed visual flash. And at the top of the car, like-new glass is completely outlined in showroom fresh stainless trim. At the back of the car, an option D80 decklid spoiler aligns perfectly with the solid fenders to perch above two chrome trimmed RS-exclusive tail lights and a correct black and chrome Rally Sport fuel cap. And a second pristine chrome bumper hangs above correct '68 Camaro Rally Sport reverse lights. Naturally, this investment grade Camaro wears all the right Z/28/RS ornamentation which includes chrome “Camaro by Chevrolet” header panel and trunk lid emblems, red and chrome “Z/28” fender emblems, and chrome “Rally Sport” scripts just behind the front tires.

Open the cowl induction hood on this show stopping Camaro and you'll find the cars original 3914678 branded 302 V8 which was cast on April (D) 25th (25) of 1968 (8), assembled in Flint, Michigan (V) on April (04) 29th (29) of 1968 as a Chevrolet Z/28 302 (MO) and stamped with a 18N427902 partial VIN. Straight from the factory, this high performance SCCA Mustang slayer utilized high flow rectangular port heads, a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons to twist 11 to 1 compression into upwards of 350 horsepower. At the top of the motor a correctly decaled cowl plenum air system feeds a large 4053 Holley 780 CFM carburetor which sits on a 3917610 Winter aluminum intake that was cast on February (2) 28th (28) of 1968 (8). At the sides of that intake, correct 3917291 heads, which are dated April (D) 16th (16) and April (D) 18th (18) of 1968 (8) prop correct chrome valve covers above 3892683 left and 3872730 right exhaust manifold which sends spent gases into a new, correctly modeled exhaust system. At the back of the motor, a correct points distributor sends power through correct Packard TV R Suppression wires; and at the front of the motor, a correct radiator sits under a correct fan shroud next to a reproduction Delco Energizer battery. The small block 302 snarls and barks like a real competition piece; and its engine compartment is top notch in every way with details such as correct GM hoses and tower clamps, new heat shields, a Delco Moraine brake booster, and evenly sprayed Chevy Orange and flat black paint. The car even retains its original, and functional, smog equipment!

The cars high-winding small block is backed by an original Muncie M21 4-speed close ratio manual transmission. That Muncie, which displays a correct 3925660 casting number, a correct 18N427902 partial VIN and a P8D24 build code that translates as a Muncie (P) that was assembled on April (D) 24th (24) of 1968 (8), spins a correct 12 bolt rear end which spins correct 3.73 gears. Holding that drivetrain off the ground is a high performance suspension which has been completely rebuilt to factory specifications and features four piston Corvette style front disc brakes, a correct fast-ratio power steering box, tuned coil springs, correct multi-leaf rear springs and tuned spiral shock absorbers. Like this Camaros engine bay, its chassis has been restored to exactly replicate the cars factory appearance using correct fasteners and presents as spotless and factory fresh in every respect. Clean floors and flat black paint make the detailing pop and things like the cars new stainless fuel tank and stainless brake and fuel lines really stand out; and there's a freshly welded mandrel bent exhaust system which exactly duplicates the cars original 'flattened' pipes and includes a correct transversely mounted muffler. At the corners, new 15 inch Chevy Rally wheels with correct stainless center caps and trim rings wear correctly-sized E70-15 Goodyear Wide Tread GT bias-ply tires.

Nothing beats LeMans Blue, Houndstooth fabric and Ivory vinyl; and this car mixes all three into a striking color combination which looks almost as good as today's high dollar custom cockpits. The Ivory trimmed and Houndstooth lined buckets are in fantastic shape and combine with a correct optional Z87 deluxe interior package, which includes Ivory molded door panels, wood grain dash applique, and bright pedal trim to elevate the cockpit to a whole new level! In front of the driver, a good looking dash houses beautifully restored gauges, which include a tic-toc-tachometer, next to wood grain applique which hangs levers for the cars heater above a correct Delco AM radio. Below that dash a correct option D55 center console houses correct option U17 four pack gauges at the base of a completely chrome Muncie short throw shifter which sits inside a great looking wood trimmed shift plate. Below the console, correct black carpet is bordered by chrome Fisher Body sill plates, protected by black rubber floor mats and anchors traditional GM seatbelts. At the sides of the seats, Ivory door panels are decorated with excellent looking reproduction stainless trim and correct white inlayed "Camaro" emblems. And above the seats, a tight black headliner retains all of its color and features a chrome trimmed dome light. In front to the driver, you'll find a correct option N34 rosewood rimmed and satin aluminum finished GM rally wheel. And behind the cockpit, the cars accurately restored trunk carries a new trunk mat beneath a matching spare tire and correct decklid decals.

Documentation for this car includes a highly detailed display board.

This 1968 Camaro Z/28 is built the way many of us would have spec-d our own if were knew then what we know now. Disc brakes are almost mandatory for a car with this Camaro's performance envelope, and the numbers matching engine, transmission and spectacular interior make for super complete car that is sure to only increase in value. If you're looking for an investment grade, extremely well done Camaro that is as complete as when it rolled out of the showroom in 1968, this is your car!
