Description

Having your cake and eating it too is what the Pro-Touring movement is all about. We all love the classic muscle cars, but time and technology tend to level the playing field, and today there are 4-door sedans that will run circles around even the nastiest original '60s muscle. That's where cars like this killer 1967 Chevelle SS come in. Stocked with all the creature comforts we expect from our daily drivers, plus a thumping 502 big block, it is a no-compromises piece that was professionally built by West Coast Classics to take no prisoners.

Starting with a clean, Arizona car, this Chevelle was given a rotisserie restoration to show standards before the modifications started. Top and bottom, the sheetmetal is 100% original, and the pros at West Coast Classics smoothed and polished it to its current breathtaking specs before spraying that gorgeous House of Kolor Blue Blood Red paint, which costs about $1200 a gallon. It has been subtly de-badged and de-chromed, but the original Chevelle goodies are still there, and for once it's nice to see an A-body that hasn't been dressed up like a fake SS. Gaps are excellent, as you'd expect from a pro-built machine, and the attention to detail is what sets high-end cars like this apart from their homeowner-grade cousins. There isn't a surface anywhere on the body of this car that hasn't been sanded, smoothed, polished, and buffed to deliver a spectacular shine, and when you walk past the car, it's hard not to touch it, just in case that paint might still be a little wet. One fellow in the shop described it as “luscious” and that's the best word I can think of to describe it.

All the chrome and stainless was also restored to show standards, including the bumpers, stock grille, and even the blacked-out tail panel, which looks totally custom without SS emblems. The tail lights in the Chevelles were miniature works of art, and those on this car look have been stuffed full of trick LED bulbs for a custom look at night. The glass is is new throughout and shows a light Soft-Ray tint that was probably appreciated in its home state of Arizona.

Then the modifications started, and the first was the monster 502 cubic inch big block that they nestled between the front fenders. Rated at 450 horsepower and a staggering 550 pounds of torque, it hurls the Chevelle up to speed like a sling shot. Of course, no show car is complete without about 50 pounds of chrome plating, and the underhood area is as bright and shiny as Times Square on New Year's Eve. Zoops provided a billet accessory drive, which handles the high-output alternator and A/C, as well as the high-flow water pump that keeps everything cool. Chevy already gives you as set of trick valve covers with the crate motor, so there's no need to replace them, and it comes complete with intake and carburetor, so it runs like the factory intended. There's a massive aluminum radiator up front with a set of Flex-A-Lite fans managing airflow, and the hoses and wires have been neatly routed out of sight as much as possible. You'll also note that the inner fenders and firewall are finished to the same exceptional standards as the rest of the body.

When we say this car received a frame-off restoration, we're not kidding. The chassis has been powdercoated satin black, and many of the suspension components were given a coat of silver powder for contrast. A built 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission built by Monster Transmissions easily handles the big block's torque, force-feeding it to a 12-bolt full of 3.73 gears and a limited slip. 2-inch drop spindles work with fat sway bars fore and aft to deliver shockingly good cornering performance, while Energy Suspension supplied all the suspension bushings and body mounts, so handling is crisp. Four-wheel disc brakes were installed and use vented and cross-drilled rotors, along with new lines, hoses, and calipers. A 2.5-inch aluminized Flowmaster exhaust sounds downright vicious, but shows zero signs of use since the car was completed—this car is FRESH. Gorgeous 18x9 and huge 20x10 Torque Thrust II wheels have been fitted, with low-profile Pirelli rubber that thoroughly stuffs the wheel wells.

Inside, the interior is almost 100% stock. With fresh gear supplied by Legendary, you know it's exact and that it fits the way the factory intended. The door panels feature switches for the power windows, and the beautifully sculpted buckets look better than new. Fresh carpets, a new headliner, and a restored dash pad also contribute to the like-new feeling inside. This is an original factory A/C car, so the original vents are fully functional, and the system is still controlled by the factory switchgear. Other trick details include the console and shifter, which now shows appropriate detents for the 4-speed transmission, and all the gauges have been restored to new condition. Why upgrade when the original stuff looks this awesome? In the trunk, there's a reproduction mat and a full-sized Torque Thrust wheel and tire assembly, so you never have to limp home on a weenie space-saver.

This killer Chevelle was featured on the TV show “Tail Fins and Chrome” just after it was finished, and has rolled up 70 test miles miles on the clock since the build was completed. Spectacularly built by one of the hottest names in Pro-Touring and finished to standards that will earn trophies at any level, this Super Sport is an incredible value in the hottest segment of the collector car market.
