Morrison Cobra Roadster 509 Donovan 597 HP 5 Speed
The world of Cobra roadsters is much like the world of street rods; there are nice cars and then there are cars that take things to a whole new level. Fortunately for Cobra enthusiasts, that means you don't have to look very hard to find a great variety of aftermarket support, and it's pretty easy to build a roadster any way you like it. The only problem then is the amount of time and money that such a massive undertaking requires. You'll spend years writing check after check to shop after shop and, maybe one day, get to finally enjoy a car that you might not even want anymore. Fortunately, there is a better solution! Why not let RK Motors Charlotte sell you a top notch car like this 1967 Cobra roadster for half the price, and a fraction of the time, of building it yourself? Sporting only 1,322 miles since its completion, this world class Cobra wraps an all-aluminum 509 V8, a modern Richmond 5-speed transmission and a highly detailed leather interior in a unique black and pewter color scheme which makes it stand out among its peers. Want an over-the-top Cobra that's a blast to show and even more fun to drive, but don't want to put a six figure dent in your bank account or spend three years waiting? We've got the car for you!
Maybe it's just me, but when I first laid eyes on this killer '67 Cobra I couldn't help but think that its Lincoln Black paint and glossy pewter stripes speak a little more highly of its monstrous performance credentials than some traditional, yet tired, blue and white or red and white paint scheme. You see, virtually every part of this roadster is immaculate and EVERYTHING about its build has been highly planned and brilliantly executed; therefore, a predictably 'vintage' paint job, as cool as those are, simply wouldn't do the car justice. Under that professional urethane paint, a lightweight fiberglass body, which is very typical of the excellent work coming from all the OEM-style aftermarket companies these days, features a high quality gel coat that results in a smooth and flawless surface. Precise panel trimming and design enhancements allow the doors, hood and trunk to function without issue despite panel gaps that would rival an original aluminum Cobra. And once all was said and done proper finish work, which included a thorough sanding and buffing of the car's thick and even clearcoat, ensured that this laser-straight re-creation looks every bit as good as the old school aluminum Cobra it replicates.
When you're dealing with a ground up build, the devil is always in the details; and those details can often be the downfall of an otherwise great design. Not so with this Cobra, its details only serve as assets to enhance an already impressive appearance. At the front of the car, like-new chrome trimmed headlights sit above correct Lucas style chrome trimmed parking lights and a full width stainless steel bumper. Behind that bumper, a custom mesh grille spans a massive radiator opening; and above that bumper, the cars smooth fiberglass hood props traditional chrome latches behind an extended fiberglass scoop. On top of the car's slick fuselage, two polished stainless roll bars, which are firmly welded to the frame, complement a traditional polished fuel filler; and a new glass windshield hangs tinted visors and clear wind wings at the sides of new stainless wipers and a great looking stainless frame. Below that windshield, polished stainless steel side pipes ride below traditional finned aluminum air extractors and a correct chrome driver's side mirror. And at the back of the car, chrome trimmed tail lights hang at the sides of a centered chrome tag bracket and a second full width stainless steel bumper. Keeping this Cobra glued to the race track is a nice set of 17 inch Compomotive Cobra wheels which roll sticky 245/45 front and massive 315/35 rear Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta radials around authentic looking spinner center caps.
But enough about all the pretty trim, let's get to the REALLY amazing part of this Cobra. A simple one armed lift of the light fiberglass hood reveals a freshly honed and decked 509 cubic inch (No, that's not a typo) aluminum Donovan V8 which utilizes a 4.500 bore and a 4.000 stroke to turn stout 11 to 1 compression into a dyno proven 597 horsepower and 672 lb./ft. of torque! At the top of that killer engine, air from a chrome K&N X-Stream Airflow air filter mixes with 93 octane pump gas that's supplied by an 830 cfm Barry Grant double pumper 4-barrel carburetor and flows into an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake which has been both ported and polished. That intake is bolted to ported and polished Edelbrock Performer RPM heads that prop custom valve covers and a full Comp valve job, which includes Comp Pro Magnum roller rockers, above a Comp Cams .566/.612 roller cam and a Crower balanced rotating assembly which includes a polished crank and Clevite bearings. Fire is provided by an MSD Blaster SS high output coil which is connected to an MSD 6AL ignition system, an MSD Pro-Billet points distributor and high performance MSD Super Conductor plug wires. Cooling comes courtesy of a high flow aluminum radiator which sends water past a Flex-a-lite Black Magic electric fan and a billet aluminum overflow tank to corrugated hoses and a high performance aluminum water pump. And the engine breathes well thanks to a slick pair of ceramic coated long tube headers which appear to be custom fabricated. At the back of the block, two Stef's Fabrication Specialties catch cans ensure that everything stays show field clean at all times. At the front of the block, a March serpentine system spins billet pulleys in front of a slick chrome alternator and a high quality Milodon gear drive. And at the bottom of the block, a CSI high torque mini starter provides a big kick to get the big crank spinning. Aesthetically, the all-aluminum engine looks right at home in the car's Lincoln Black engine bay. And well-planned details like a full set of braided hoses, a full set of Earl's fittings, a chrome Barry Grant high performance fuel pump and a trick, polished dipstick are both functional and appealing.
The best things about Cobra replicas are: 1) they're built specifically for doing a great job at going very fast and 2) they've been perfected to the point that your face will hurt from smiling when you take one out on the track. The first thing you'll notice when you put this car on a lift is its massive Everett Morrison 4 inch tube frame which has been detailed in a smooth coat of satin black paint. And the second thing you'll notice is a virtually indestructible Richmond 4+1 5-speed performance transmission which has been equipped with a full scatter shield, a Centerforce clutch and a Lakewood bellhousing. That transmission sends power through a heavy duty driveshaft, which is complete with a driveshaft safety hoop, to a Dana limited slip rear end that spins all of the cars massive power through highway friendly 3.08 Richmond gears. At the front of the chassis, stamped control arms combine with a chrome, heavy duty sway bar, polished QA1 coil overs and quick ratio power steering to make the car's turns as effortless as its power. And at the back of the chassis, a Corvette independent rear suspension is fitted with two more polished QA1 coil overs and a modified rear sway bar which ensure good traction and excellent launches. Stops come courtesy of a power four wheel disc brake system which sends fluid from braided hoses into big four piston calipers that clamp 13 inch cross drilled front rotors and 12 inch cross drilled rear rotors. And aesthetically, the Lincoln Black bottom of this car is as clean and show worthy as its top side with niceties such as a heavy duty oil pan and fresh stainless hardware adding just the right amount of contrast.
Known for their purpose-built simplicity, Cobra interiors are usually the last place builders spend their time and money. Not with this car! When you jump inside its leather lined cockpit, you're treated with a level of detail and finish that is normally reserved for high dollar street rods. Front and center is a pair of custom pleated leather bucket seats which feature five point Simpson race harnesses and enough tail bone support to turn this hot rod into a long distance cruiser. In front of those seats, a body-matched and leather wrapped dash props a chrome rearview mirror and a full assortment of Auto Meter Pro-Comp Ultra-Lite gauges above a Clarion ProAudio CD player. Below those seats, new carpet, which flows over the console and up behind the seats, is protected by color keyed “Venomous” branded floor mats. And at the sides of those seats, the car's fiberglass doors have been covered in matching camel leather and fitted with both large storage pockets and trick cable door pulls. In front of the driver, a three spoke, leather wrapped steering wheel spins around a satin finished Total Performance Inc. tilt steering column. Beside the driver a Hurst Competition Plus short shifter props a marbled shift knob in front of a chrome emergency brake handle and a chrome fire extinguisher. And behind the driver, the car's fairly sizable trunk, which features a cool combination of Lincoln Black paint, polished aluminum panels and camel carpet, has enough room for a couple of light suitcases or a day's worth of gear for the golf course.
Included with this sale of this top notch Cobra is all of the books and manuals for its various parts, a nice sized stack of build receipts and official dyno paperwork.
Carefully assembled, flawless in condition and equipped with the hardware to deliver the ride of your life, this Cobra is sure to satisfy anyone who has a pulse. Why waste your valuable time waiting for a car to be built when we have a world class roadster sitting right here in our RK Motors Charlotte showroom?
