Description

There are some timeless designs that look good no matter how the car is built—stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever. This 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is one of those cars. With clean, elegant lines and a minimum of fussy trim, these were strongly styled cars in the ‘60s that still look wonderful today. And because of that classic elegance, they accept modifications better than a lot of vintage sheet-metal. Add $30,000 worth of modern paint, some big wheels, and suddenly you have a 21st century take on a car that has been a crowd favorite for nearly 50 years.

That paint, if it looks familiar, is gorgeous Lexus Ruby Red Pearl, one of those colors that seem to change color as you move around the car. Sometimes bright red and other times nearly black, it tends to emphasize the curves and shapes of the metal underneath. But if you use a color like that, the bodywork had better be top-notch, because these modern paints tend to show off every little wave and ripple and don’t tolerate sloppy workmanship when it comes to finishing. Fortunately, the guys who put this one together were on top of things, because it is uniformly excellent throughout, and it better be with a $30,000 price tag (yes, we have receipts). If you’re familiar with these cars, you know the usual rust zones—the rear window channel and those big, flat quarter panels. In the case of this one, there were repairs in those areas, but they were expertly done and there’s no sign of them on the exterior of this car. Look at how the panels flow together, the good gaps all around, and the beautiful surface that only comes from a good color sand and buff.

Although it’s dressed in SS livery today, this car is not an original Malibu SS, but does it even matter? All the original emblems have been replaced, with the correct SS badges added where required. Chrome is excellent throughout, and while this car is definitely a product of the ‘60s, the restrained use of brightwork makes for a very cool-looking custom today. The grille has been restored (thankfully not painted body color), and the tail panel between the taillights looks as good as it did when the car was new. I really like the subtle hood ornament and center trim, which gives the car a retro feel and is often the first thing a customizer removes. This is a very tastefully done car in every way.

Motivation comes in the form of a tried-and-true small block Chevy V8. 45 years later, and things are still much the same as they were when this car was new. This time, it’s a crate 350 making 290 horsepower, which is probably at least 100 horsepower more than this car had originally. Air and fuel is still mixed in a carburetor, a 600 CFM Edelbrock in this case, and the exhaust is handled by a set of ceramic coated Hedman headers, both of which are perfectly appropriate to both 1965 and 2010. The ignition system is a Mallory HEI system, which is both rugged and reliable and a no-brainer for applications like this. It has all been socked into a great-looking engine bay with satin black inner fenders and firewall and a lot of shiny jewelry, including a polished billet accessory drive and chrome valve covers. A few dabs of bright red like the ignition wires and the Chevy bow-tie emblem on the valve covers and air cleaner ties it all together very nicely without being overdone. The radiator is a massive BeCool unit that uses a pair of electric fans to keep this cruiser cool under the most demanding conditions. And you’ve undoubtedly noticed that dual-reservoir master cylinder, necessary equipment for the 4-wheel disc brakes underneath.

In addition to those 4-wheel disc brakes, this car also features a few other 21st century upgrades. The transmission is a 700R4 4-speed automatic, which manages to both deliver crisp acceleration and great highway mileage. Out back, there’s a Chevy 10-bolt rear packing 3.31 gears, making this car an outstanding high-speed cruiser. Floors were undercoated, but it’s a tidy job without a lot of overspray on critical components. To get that perfect stance—not too low, but not stock, either—a pair of 1-inch drop spindles was used up front, but the springs are all stock. Beefy sway bars were installed front and rear to shore up the handling and take advantage of the grip delivered by the sticky Nitto 555 radials on gorgeous 17-inch Boyd Coddington wheels. The soundtrack is compliments of Flowmaster.

Like the exterior, the interior is a masterful blend of old and new. The materials again shout “Lexus!” with 2-tone fawn leather, but the design and the bench seat are pure 1965 Chevrolet. The ididit chrome steering column still sports a column shifter and the custom steering wheel design matches the road wheels exactly. Digital gauges have been nestled into the original dashboard, while a well-installed Vintage Air HVAC system keeps things cool. An upgraded radio with a trunk-mounted CD changer handles entertainment, but again, nothing was cut up, so the look is subtle. The door panels, headliner and carpet have all been custom sewn to match the original equipment, just with an updated color palette.  The trunk has been finished using gray carpet, and permits access to the CD changer and amplifier for the entertainment system.

Interestingly, this car also comes with a few cool pieces of documentation, including the original owner’s manual with the Protect-O-Plate still intact. There are also receipts and manuals for many of the components that went into the construction of this gorgeous car.

Sometimes the best cars are the ones that speak softly. No blower sticking up through the hood, no 20-inch rims on a slammed chassis, no wild graphics, just a clean, well-constructed Malibu that was purpose designed for cruising. While a lot of cars are designed to impress onlookers, this one was built to impress the guy behind the wheel. It’s powerful, reliable, and well-sorted, thanks to a proven combination of parts and careful construction. Add in the subtle, yet beautifully done body and interior, and you get a car that you’ll be proud to own and show. And hey, the price is pretty reasonable, too—go ahead and try to build a nicer car for less money. It was a winning formula in 1965, and it’s still timeless today. Don’t miss your chance and call today!
