Description

Straight off the showroom floor, Corvettes are special cars. It's part of what draws enthusiasts towards them and a good reason why owners often take excellent care of them. It's an idea that's been around as long as the Corvette itself and why we occasionally run across cars like this stunning numbers matching Rally Red 1966 coupe. Even before the frame up restoration, this was an incredibly well maintained example of vintage American muscle with tons of original parts. Today, this is a true investment grade 327 4-speed Corvette with a long list of options including the rare telescopic steering column. If you're looking for a fun car that will only appreciate in value, this 'Vette is the perfect choice.

To verify some of this car's credentials, here's the decoded VIN:

1 – Chevrolet
9 – Corvette
4 – V8
37 – Two Door Coupe
6 – 1966 Build Date
S – St. Louis Assembly Plant

And the trim tag:

A09 – September 9th Build Date
66 437 – 1966 Coupe
S1861 – St. Louis Sequence Number
407AG – Red Interior
974AA – Rally Red Exterior

There are certain cars you can walk around and simply sense that they have been well cared for. This Corvette is one of those cars. Look down the sides and you won't see an over restored body with razor straight lines. Instead, you'll find a great looking example of how those fiberglass shells actually looked when they were new. Panel fitment is surprisingly good with even gaps all around the car. Covered in a smooth even coat of Rally Red, the aggressive lines of the second generation Corvette are as eye-catching as ever. The modern paint offers a new level of depth that accentuates those lines well.

This Corvette's classic profile is completed by subtle enhancements such as the new-for-'66 grid design on the body width grille. Above that grille, headlights are tucked away under headlight doors that sit on either side of the classic crossed-flag Corvette logo on the hood. The same logo can be found on the fenders, directly about the three vertical fender vents. The side pipe covers display the correct satin finish, further aiding the cars showroom fresh look. All chrome and stainless show well with some pieces showcasing a patina that can only be accomplished through years of care. Glass looks equally as impressive, with vintage decals highlighting the cars factory air conditioning system.

Lift the fiberglass hood and you'll find a potent 327 small block V8 with an impressive list of original numbers matching pieces. To start with, the block displays a 3858174 casting number with a H275 (August 27, 1965) date code that makes sense with the car's September 9, 1966 build date. The engine has been rebuilt to the same specifications that produced an advertised 300 horsepower in '66. The alternator is a later piece but nearly everything else is correct including heads, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, radiator, carburetor and the freshly rebuilt factory air conditioning compressor. Limited life pieces such as belts and hoses have been replaced using GM-branded reproduction pieces. There are a few pieces of factory style chrome in the bay such as the distributor cover and open element air clear with a correct 327/300hp Turbo Fire decal. The setup breathes through factory style side-exit exhausts.

Behind the 327, a numbers matching Muncie 4-speed with a fresh clutch handles power application while a stock rear end sends that power to the road. If there were ever issues with the second generation Corvette's stock suspension, they were sorted out by 1966, so this one has been rebuilt to stock specifications. The independent rear setup looks as cool as ever with the transverse leaf spring spanning the width of the body. The undercarriage has the look of a car that has been well cared for its entire life. Like the engine bay, it's clean but not over restored in any way. These cars were built with the track in mind, so braking is handled by a confidence-inspiring four-wheel disc setup. The optional power steering system extends that confidence to steering. At the corners, 15” chrome knock-off wheels with three bar spinners wrapped in Coker 205/75 tires look great against the red paint.

Regardless of the drivetrain options, second generation Corvettes offer one of the best interiors of any American car from that era. This one has been judiciously restored, leaving many original pieces untouched. The surprisingly comfortable bucket seats show like new and look great sitting on top of fresh red carpet. From the drivers seat, it becomes clear how well-optioned this car really is. Controls for the factory air conditioning, power windows, AM/FM radio and power antenna are all conveniently in reach. The centerpiece is an original teak steering wheel that sits atop a rare telescopic steering column. On the dash, fully restored gauges keep all systems in check. Every bit of chrome has been restored to like-new condition and shows beautifully. The original door panels and dash pad both have minor blemishes but the owner chose to maintain the character (and value) of those pieces by leaving them in original condition.

Documentation includes pictures of the car as it was bought. There are also approximately $30k worth of receipts that tell the story of how a nice '66 Corvette became a spectacular '66 Corvette.

Early Corvettes are among the most satisfying classics to own. Regardless if they are wild pro-touring builds or numbers matching originals like this one, they are sure to draw a crowd and conjure memories for almost everyone in attendance. If you've been searching for a classic Corvette that looks and, more importantly, feels right don't miss your opportunity to make this stunning '66 yours.
