Description

In the early 90s a new generation of car enthusiasts latched onto spectacular, technology-packed performance cars from the 'big five' Japanese automakers. The Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo, a captive import from Mitsubishi, was one of those rare sports cars; and it made no qualms about catering directly to enthusiasts. Technology laden and built to be driven, most of these global featherweights were modified and whipped hard by three or four different owners. And as any diehard sports car fan will tell you, finding a Stealth that hasn't been around the track more than its fair share of times is extremely difficult; and finding a top-of-the-line twin turbo car that has never even SEEN a track is virtually impossible. This one owner, all original 1992 Stealth R/T Twin Turbo is an exceptional, reference quality example of just that. Stored in a garage for literally three quarters of its life, it's the kind of time capsule sports machine that'll transport you right back to the days when performance was about more than just horsepower!

By 1992, the Nagoya, Japan built Dodge Stealth had become an established player in America's re-invigorated sports car market; and virtually every gearhead knew if you wanted to look cool, you bought an ES. If you wanted to look cool and go fast, you bought an R/T. If you wanted to look cool, go fast and kick ass, you bought an R/T Twin Turbo like the killer blue coupe you see here. Delivered new to its one and only owner, a New York urbanite, this Far East Mopar spent its entire life bouncing between weather-proof storage, fastidious maintenance and occasional weekend adventures. Naturally, a regimen like that means the car racked up very few miles; and I'd be willing to bet it's rarely seen anything other than sunshine and warm temperatures. A quick check of its undercarriage and suspension reveals no evidence of abuse or rust. A quick check of its VIN certifies its body has never seen any major repairs. And a quick check of our pictures confirms its one year old Mystic Blue paint, which happens to be one of only 327 coats issued for 1992 twin turbos, is both bright and glossy. That's right, even 20 years after it rolled out of the showroom this spry sports coupe is still a true head turner that starts random conversations everywhere it goes!

With its low nose, muscular haunches and wide stance, the Stealth is a model of early-90s cool. At the front of the car gloss black, pop-up head lamps ride above an aggressive air dam which hangs halogen fog lights below a stamped “DODGE” script. At the top of that air dam, a large flat hood leads the eye past fade-free shock caps to pristine factory glass that's branded by “DOHC 24V ALL WHEEL DRIVE” decals, flanked by aerodynamic C-pillar trim and capped by a gloss black roof. At the base of that glass, ridged front fenders flow into sculpted doors which hang body-matched mirrors and flush-fit door handles above aggressive, “TWIN TURBO” branded side skirts. At the back of those doors, a tall rear decklid spoiler floats above a thoughtful rear windshield wiper and a standard electric antenna. And at the back of the car, factory fresh tail lights are perfectly aligned above a “DODGE” script, a “STEALTH RT” script, clear reverse lights and spotless stainless exhaust tips.

In the early 90s, factory performance wars finally started to heat up again, but this time instead of Chevy, Ford and Mopar battling it out, it was the Japanese automakers with their turbo-charged compacts. Sure, the Viper made its debut and the Corvette was still around, but those cars were in a different league; and the price of admission to that league was steep. The Japanese automakers recognized a niche for affordable sports cars and a performance war began. This car's Mitsubishi designed twin turbo V6, a product of that war, benefitted from technology that was very advanced for its time. The engine is a DOHC 24-valve 3.0-liter 6-cylinder which sports electronic fuel injection, aluminum heads, factory roller rockers and of course two turbochargers. Those turbos are intercooled via intakes incorporated into the car's front air dam; and they make this smooth mill good for 296 horsepower and 306 ft./lb. of torque. Not bad when you consider all this horsepower and technological goodness could be had in a relatively light car for about half the price of Dodge's V10 flagship. The engine compartment in this Stealth is 100% original and in pristine, factory condition. In all black, it's as serious looking as the rest of the car with just a hint of silver and red here and there to add both color and contrast.

Twin Turbo models like this one came standard with a 5-speed Getrag manual transmission feeding a full-time all-wheel drive system. That system's 45 front, 55 rear power split gives the car catapult-like acceleration in any weather condition while four-wheel steering turns the rear wheels in phase with the front wheels for additional stability during high speed cornering. At low speeds the car's electronics are completely transparent, almost entirely unnoticeable and almost exactly replicating normal two-wheel steering and normal front wheel drive. A driver selected dual-mode exhaust system opens up the mufflers for more power at high engine speeds; giving the car an aggressive bark all the while allowing you to have a daily driver that won't wake up the neighbors every time you taxi into the driveway. The driver selected variable rate four-wheel independent suspension does an excellent job tightening apexes or loosening tension depending on where the sport/touring selector is placed. Stopping comes courtesy of four piston calipers which squeeze 16 inch rotors up front and 15 inch rotors out back. Power is put to the pavement through four factory alloy wheels which spin 245/45ZR17 Pirelli PZero Neros around “DODGE” branded center caps. And overall, this Stealth is sure-footed, feels surprisingly fast, and is an absolute blast to drive!

This Dodge's jet-inspired black leather cockpit, which presents a striking contrast to its clean blue exterior panels, shows absolutely no signs of wear at all. The six-way power driver's seat keeps you as comfortable for quick blasts of speed as it will during long road trips, and the passenger and rear buckets don't appear to have ever been used for anything. In front of the driver a dramatic jet black dash, which shows zero defects, is packed full of gauges and instruments that work exactly as they should. At the center of that dash, automated climate control sits above a great sounding AM/FM radio that's complete with both a cassette deck and a CD player. Between the seats, the car's console holds a black shifter and controls for the power driver's seat above black carpet that's protected by matching “STEALTH” floor mats. And at the sides of the seats, door panels which are typically faded and ballooned from heat and light, present as new from their horizontal defroster vents all the way to their red puddle lamps. Present and accounted for is the usual host of convenience and luxury features that seem to populate ever modern sports car: power windows, power door locks, intermittent front and rear wipers, heated remote power outside mirrors, cruise control, a tilt column, a leather wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls, a rear defroster and dual airbags. Open the hatch to find rear cargo area that is showroom new with fresh carpet, a like new privacy shade and an original spare that has never been removed from the trunk.

Whenever we manage to find low mileage Stealths, they sell almost immediately. A whole generation of buyers grew up with these cars as their dream machines, and since they're becoming increasingly scarce, the good ones are snapped up as quickly as they come to market. If you're an enthusiast who likes to put his hardware on the road, few cars deliver the blend of performance and luxury of this R/T Twin Turbo. With only one owner, factory maintenance and a killer color combination, this car will make you smile every time you slide behind the wheel!
