Description

Like the 'tri-five' Chevys which came before it, the Chevelle was one of those cars that GM aced right out of the gate and continued to perfect. Eventually, the marque became one of the strongest brands in automotive history; and at one point, with a full list of body styles, options, trim grades, color combinations, and engines that ranged from mild to outrageous, literally embodied the 'custom built' nature that defines the muscle car era. The challenge then, was for the customer to pick a car which optimized every aspect of that variety while not being too unlivable or boring. And whoever checked the options sheet for this investment grade 1970 Chevelle Super Sport probably came as close as you can to having it all. First, the car's drop top roof optimizes cruising; secondly, its original big block LS5 engine is tame enough to be teamed with factory air conditioning, yet strong enough to kick some serious tail at the stoplight; third, its original M22 'Rock Crusher' transmission is great for spirited driving; and fourth, its correct Cortez Silver on black color combination is one of the best looking paint schemes to ever adorn any Chevrolet. And when you add all those desirable traits to the fact that, according to research by a Chevrolet expert this car is 1 of only 23 produced with its particular set of options, you get one incredible muscle car! If you're in the market for a top notch example of one of the best Chevrolets ever produced, this exceptional 1970 Chevelle SS LS5 convertible is just the car you've been looking for!

As Chevelle enthusiasts, we all know it can be very hard to prove a true 1970 Chevelle Super Sport. Fortunately, the sale of this pristine A-body includes the car's original Protect-O-Plate. And that, in combination with the VIN, will verify that this car is indeed a real deal SS 454. Here's how the VIN and Protect-O-Plate decode:

VIN:

* 1 - Chevrolet
* 36 - Malibu 8-cylinder (NOTE: For 1970, the SS option was only available on Malibu coded cars)
* 67 - Two door convertible
* 0 - 1970 model year
* B - Assembled at GM's Baltimore, Maryland manufacturing facility
* 194056 - Sequence number

PROTECT-O-PLATE:

* 136670B194056 – The car's VIN
* R – Rochester carburetor
* T0330CRT – The car's LS5 454 specific engine stamp (T: Tonawanda, 03: March, 30: 30th, CRT: LS5 454-4/4-speed manual)
* CRV0409B – The car's rear axle code (CRV: 3.31 Posi-traction, 0409: April 09th of 1970, B: Buffalo, New York)
* 5 – Assembled in May of 1970 (NOTE: This Chevelle's cowl tag is stamped with a 05 (May) D (fourth week) build date as well)
* P0D21 – The car's transmission code (P: Muncie, 0: 1970 model year, D: April, 21: 21st)
* 11331 – Various options

Assembled in Baltimore, Maryland and shipped to Jack Maxton Chevrolet in Worthington, Ohio, this awesome LS5 Chevelle convertible is the beneficiary of a recent nut and bolt rotisserie restoration during which no expense was spared to restore every square inch of its sculpted metal to better-than-new condition. After the car was completely stripped and a few high quality replacement panels were welded up, its body was massaged into a laser straight profile and prepped for a correct coat of GM code 14 Cortez Silver. Once that glossy urethane dried, the slick silver body was appropriately battle dressed in correct GM code 19 Tuxedo Black rally stripes and sealed in a glossy, durable clearcoat shell. Today, this top notch Chevelle is as a spectacular muscle car which combines the best aspects of big block Chevrolet performance with the gratuitous fun and old school style that only a classic drop top can provide.

For the 1970 model year the Chevelle was given a squared off, masculine look which is still some of the most popular and beloved Chevrolet design language of all time. And this convertibles bright Cortez Silver paint combines with a full array of well-done details to perfectly accentuate all of its hard lines. At the front of the car, a black, Super Sport specific split grille hangs pristine “Chevelle” and “SS” emblems between a body-width chrome bumper, correct stainless trimmed T3 headlights and clear, square parking lights. Above that grille, correct stainless hood pins secure a functional ZL2 cowl induction hood that is complete with correct chrome “Cowl Induction” scripts; and like-new soft ray tinted glass props a correct black canvas top above a full outfit of pristine stainless trim. At the sides of the car, a correct chrome driver's side mirror perfectly complements new stainless wheel well moldings and traditional chrome GM door handles while white “SS” emblems with red “454” inlays give the car an aggressive, race-ready appearance. At the back of the car, a pristine body-width bumper frames a fresh black Super Sport insert which is centered between crystal clear tail lights; and a fresh “Chevelle by Chevrolet” trunk emblem perfectly complements correct stainless exhaust tips.

If you wanted a top of the line Chevelle in 1970, you had two options. You could order the LS6 and put up with a moody, uncivilized big block which doesn't like running any accessories. Or you could order an LS5, like the one in this car, and have a nicely optioned, well rounded performer which could still stomp virtually anything on the street. Either way you'd have an awesome car, but the irony of the situation is: LS5 cars are actually RARER than LS6 cars! Rolling out of the factory with an impressive 360 horsepower and a massive 500 lb./ft. of torque, this Chevelle's original 454 cubic inch LS5 V8 wears a correct 3963512 casting number, a March ( C ) 27th (27) of 1970 (0) casting date, a correct “CRT” suffix stamp and a correct 194056 partial VIN. At the top of that big engine, air is forced through a completely functional cowl induction system into a correctly detailed single snorkel air cleaner which rides on a correct Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor and a correct 3955287 intake manifold. At the sides of that intake, mirror-like valve covers loom correct Packard TV R Suppression wires above correct 3964290 heads and fully restored exhaust manifolds. And at the back of that intake, a correct points distributor rides beside a fresh wiper motor and a correct Delco Moraine brake booster. Cooling is supplied by a correct radiator which sends water past a correctly shrouded seven blade fan to a correct 3931065 water pump via reproduction GM hoses that are complete with a full set of correct tower clamps. And spark is supplied by a reproduction Delco battery which is wired to a correct 61 amp heavy duty alternator that spins between a correct Frigidaire air compressor and correct Harrison air conditioning components. Naturally, the cars satin black engine bay and Chevy orange block are fully detailed and ready for show from their correctly replicated chalk marks to their showroom fresh decals. And all belts, hardware and stainless lines are in the kind of excellent, showroom fresh condition that ensures both big points and great performance.

Underneath this Chevelle, 'better-than-new' is the prevalent theme with freshly over-restored floors, that are covered in a super slick coat of gloss black paint, hanging over a spotless, highly detailed chassis. Behind the stout big block, an original M22 'Rock Crusher' 4-speed, which wears a correct 3925661 casting number, a P0D21C date stamp that decodes as a Muncie (P) M22 ( C ) built on April (D) 21st (21) of 1970 (0), and a correct 194056 partial VIN, sends power to a familiar “CRV” branded 12 bolt Posi-traction rear end that's equipped with easy driving 3.31 gears. Holding that killer drivetrain off the ground is a completely restored F41 heavy duty performance suspension that is equipped with thicker coils, heavy duty shocks, a larger diameter front sway bar, a standard rear sway bar, boxed lower rear control arms and upper cross braces. And correct power steering combines with correct, and fully rebuilt, power front disc and power rear drum brakes to provide greatly improved turns and modern car stops. At the center of the car, the cars restored manifolds dump spent gases into a mandrel bent true dual exhaust system which is complete with factory replacement mufflers and correct rear mounted resonators. And at the corners of the car, correctly painted 14 inch Super Sport wheels spin vintage looking F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval tires around correct “SS” branded center caps. Naturally, the bottom of this Chevelle is pristine in every way; and every square inch of its fully restored hardware, from the new stainless fuel tank all the way to the correct 1108418 starter, is completely detailed to both show and go!

The great thing about a black and silver car is the sheer amount of contrast those two essentially opposite colors provide. The correct GM code 756 black vinyl in this Chevelle drop top looks absolutely fantastic wrapped in its bright silver panels. The correct front bucket and rear bench seats were rebuilt with fresh foam and new seat covers, show no virtually wear at all, and blend seamlessly with the car's new black carpet and fresh rubber floor mats. In front of those seats, a traditional black Super Sport dash hangs a trio of rebuilt gauges next to a correct Delco AM/FM radio, a button for the car's power top and controls for a factory correct C60 air conditioning system. Between those seats, a great looking console frames a chrome Muncie floor shifter, that's complete with a black cue ball knob, in pristine stainless trim; and at the sides of those seats, fade-free black door panels center pristine stainless trim and new chrome handles around straight and pliable armrests. In front of the driver, a satin finished GM Rally wheel spins a cushioned rim around a traditional red, white and blue Chevrolet horn button that's cinched to a correct tilt steering column. And behind the cockpit, a pristine, black convertible cowl buttons down over a fully restored trunk which includes a correct mat, a full-size spare tire, a correct bumper jack and correct decklid decals.

Documentation for this awesome Chevelle includes the car's original Protect-O-Plate, both an original and a reproduction owner's manual, an original accessories guide, an original Chevelle brochure, a reproduction window sticker, a stack of restoration receipts and a large display board.
