Description

With 1966 and 1967 big block Corvette Sting Rays bringing $100K and up, the small block cars have become highly desirable to Corvette enthusiasts seeking cars to drive and show without having to mortgage the farm. This exceptional matching-numbers 4-speed 1966 Corvette L79 with A/C definitely hits the sweet spot! We had this car with us once before, and one Saturday three different prospective buyers came in. While two were going over the car with their group of "expert friends" and commenting on how nice it is, the third quietly pulled out his checkbook and purchased the car on the spot. Before we shipped it to him, we added a wood steering wheel, rebuilt the front disc brakes, and added OEM power steering to create an extremely road-worthy car.

A documented, numbers matching car with factory air conditioning, this '66 is the perfect Corvette for showing and cruising. As evidenced by the ORIGINAL factory warranty booklet and the ORIGINAL Protect-O-Plate, this Corvette was delivered new on August 3, 1966 to Byron Hendry of Forest Park, Georgia, by Martin Burks Chevrolet of Forest Park, GA. We are unsure where Mr. Hendry is today, but we'd like to commend him for his fine taste in cars back in 1966!

This is a well-maintained 1966 Corvette that has received one mild, cosmetic restoration, and retains most of its original parts. The body on this Corvette is beautiful, with no evidence of any collision damage ever. The panel fit is exceptional with show-quality Nassau Blue paint, and a clear plastic protective coating over the nose for chip protection. After all, what good is owning one of the most potent small-block Corvettes ever built if you can't put it on the road?

All glass appears to be original, with proper date codes and stamps, and is in excellent condition. All trim and emblems appear to be original pieces or exact reproductions, and are in outstanding condition. Original Corvette side pipes show as new. The front and rear bumpers appear to be 100% original and unrestored, which should give you a good idea of how nice this car really is.

According to the original cowl tag, this Corvette came from the factory with a Black interior, and a Nassau Blue exterior, a very desirable combination on a 1966. The original L79 327/350 HP motor is still present, stamped 6122722, which represents 1966, and the last six digits of the VIN number (and it all matches). The engine pad also reflects F050FHT, which stands for Flint, MI, last week of May, 1966 Corvette, 327/350 horsepower L79, 4-speed, 4-barrel Holley carburetor, high-performance hydraulic cam. The heads are original to the engine, as are the intake manifold, carburetor and exhaust manifolds. The original air cleaner carries the correct decals, and the entire engine compartment is nicely detailed and correct. As I mentioned earlier, RK Motors added factory-style power steering, and you'd be hard-pressed to identify this car as originally being a manual steering model today. The original factory air conditioning set-up has been rebuilt and blows ice cold, a feature you'll appreciate when you put this wonderful driver on the road.

The Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission is original to the car, as evidenced by the 6122722 stamping, which matches the engine and the VIN. The transmission case number is 3885010, which means a 65-67 M20, M21, M22. P0420 equates to Muncie, April 20th, 1966. The rear axle also appears to be original to the car (there is no VIN stamp on an axle, but there is no evidence the axle has ever been out of the car), with a rear axle code of AK-4-14-66. AK translates to 3:36 standard rear ratio, and 4-14-66 is the build date of the axle. It all rides on correct 15-inch knock-off wheels with spinners, with four recent P205/75R15 Uniroyal Royal Seal tires.

The interior of this Corvette is nicely restored, with correct replacement door panels, new carpeting and new seat covers. The dash and instrument cluster is unrestored and in very nice condition, with all instrumentation operating properly (speedometer/tachometer/fuel/battery/oil pressure/water temp). The original AM/FM radio works perfectly, eliminating the need to add any kind of modern upgrades that would look out of place. The original console and four-speed chrome shifter look factory fresh, and that restored wood steering wheel that RK Motors installed still looks like new. The headliner appears to be original and is in exceptional condition. And don't forget about that factory A/C, which is perfect for hot summer days and nights.

Documentation includes an original owner's manual with an intact Protect-O-Plate, as I described earlier, as well as a stack of receipts for some recent work that appears to include a fresh water pump.

In short, this is a highly desirable, nicely restored, clean, numbers-matching 1966 Chevrolet Corvette L79. These cars have been moving up in value at a consistent rate for years and will probably continue to do so for many years to come. Unlike the 427 cars, the L79 cars are still reasonably priced and can be enjoyed on sunny days without fear of extinguishing their value. These cars represent the best of both worlds in the Corvette hobby, and this car has all of the right stuff! Remember those two potential buyers who were left out in the cold last time this car was here - they have undoubtedly already noticed the car's availability. I'm guessing it won't be around long, so call today!
