Description

Over the past few years we've certainly seen some nice weekend warriors, but this 1963 Ford Galaxie 500, with its 406 cubic inch tri-power V8 and tough Borg Warner transmission, is definitely one of the best! Fully sorted and ready to hit the road, this awesome Ford combines the stump pulling torque of its muscle car offspring with the kind of old school Detroit comfort that's classy enough to parade half the neighborhood down Main Street. Today, thanks to a high quality restoration, the car is not only a reliable and exceptionally roomy place to spend the summer sightseeing, it's also a vintage piece of Americana that will be welcome at virtually any car show in any town. If you're looking for a solid classic that's stylish, powerful and has a lot of history, who says you have to buy a cramped, high maintenance muscle car? This awesome Galaxie 500 will look just as cool rolling down the road, turn just as many heads at the local drive in and, thanks to its thorough rebuild, provide you with miles of carefree cruising!

In typical 60s Detroit fashion Ford's second generation Galaxie, adorned with long surfaces and creases that stretch from stem to stern, is incredibly hard to make straight once it's been overhauled or reworked. Fortunately, the metal on this super cool drop-top has been subjected to a professional restoration that involved good panel alignment and an astute attention to detail. The car's classic flanks are very straight, leading me to believe it was a clean, rust-free canvas when the first sheet of sand paper was laid on its solid and sculpted body. That body's gaps are better than average, featuring doors that operate with precision, vertical components that are centered in their respective openings, and fresh and pliable weather stripping. And overall, this full-size cruiser carries every indication that its high quality rebuild was a well-planned effort to create a timeless sun chaser which looks good on either the road or the show field!

For 1963, Ford's Galaxie line was complemented by a variety of other entries including the sporty Thunderbird, compact Falcon and mid-size Fairlane. This newfound diversity of product allowed the car to grow into a more specialized and upscale offering that, thanks to its success in NASCAR, became more streamlined and substantial in appearance. At the front of this big red rocket a concave, body-width grille hangs four pristine headlights and a combination emblem/hood latch above a pristine chrome bumper that's complete with small, square parking lights. Behind that grille a flat and wide hood, which centers a bright stainless spear between a bold “FORD” script and chrome fender fins, leads the eye to like-new glass that's framed in well-maintained trim, flanked by ornate mirrors and capped by a white vinyl top. At the bottom of that glass, stylish chrome door handles ride inside broad stainless trim that frames gold “406” emblems and black fender louvers above expressive “Galaxie 500” emblems. Below that trim, dent-free rocker guards combine with old school fender skirts to balance the car's sport with a touch of class. And behind those fender skirts, traditional 'pie plate' tail lights frame a wide-set “GALAXIE” script, a fresh chrome valence, a new rear bumper and satin black exhaust tips.

Speaking of this Galaxie's hood, it's long and flat for a reason. To hide a 406 cubic inch, tri-power Thunderbird Special V8 in a way that leaves no evidence as to the high performance fury the car's cocky traffic light opponent is about to unleash. Wearing a 1964 casting date (this Z code Galaxie was originally equipped with a 390 V8), this rare Ford block is dominated by an oval, finned aluminum air cleaner which pipes wind into three correct Holley 2-barrel carburetors that are juiced by a heavy duty pump and clean stainless lines. At the bottom of those carburetors, a correct aluminum intake, which is topped by a slick chrome oil cap, holds a modern Mallory Unilite distributor which sends fire through eight high quality Accel 300+ Ferro Spiral plug wires. At the sides of that distributor, gold “Thunderbird” stamped valve covers hang gold “Ford Motor Company High Performance Engine” decals above correct header-style exhaust manifolds. Cooling is provided by new hoses which circulate water through correct tower clamps and what appears to be an original radiator. And spark is regulated by an awesome MSD 6AL ignition system which interfaces a fresh MSD coil with a reproduction Autolite Sta-Ful battery. Aesthetically, the car's clean engine bay looks good enough to show off to anyone, anywhere. The underside of its hood has been fully finished to match its bright red body, the satin black engine block perfectly contrasts its gold accessory components; and everything blends seamlessly into gloss black fenders and a gloss black firewall.

At the bottom of this vintage convertible, solid floors and an equally solid X-frame are supported by a road ready suspension that's been recently inspected and fully serviced. The muscular 406's power is transmitted rearward through a correct Borg Warner T-10 4-speed transmission which transforms this would be boulevard cruiser into a drag strip battle ship with the flick of a wrist. Behind that gearbox, a large diameter driveshaft spins a buff Ford nine inch rear end which is ready to supply its new owner with years of hard launches and steady reliability. At the front of the car, a lucid power steering rack mixes surprisingly tight turns with modern, responsive feedback. At the center of the car a free-flowing true dual exhaust system, which feeds a pair of rear-mounted Flowmaster mufflers, gives the big engine a deep and throaty voice. And at the corners of the car rebuilt heavy duty brake drums, which supply quick and precise stops, ride behind a nice set of 235/75/15 Firestone whitewall tires that are mounted to traditional, painted steel wheels and fresh stainless center caps.

One of the best virtues of this Ford is the fact that you can drop its top and enjoy endless hours of open air cruising; and when you do, you'll be riding in both comfort and style thanks to a fully restored vinyl interior! At the center of the car, red bench seats, which feature retro silver piping, are the perfect place for you and your family to spend sunny afternoons seeing the sights. In front of those seats, a freshly finished dash hangs a fade and crack free pad above original, color matched gauges, a correct AM radio and an ornate red, blue and chrome steering wheel. Below those seats, new loop pile carpet props heavy duty floor mats next to a correct Hurst shifter. And at the sides of the seats, stainless-trimmed door panels hang correct chrome handles above correct, curved armrests. At the back of that fully restored cockpit, a nicely finished trunk features a new mat, a full-size spare tire and a correct jack assembly. And everything in this drop top Galaxie, from its bright chrome mirror to its tight red cowl, is stylish and exceptionally well-done!

When it comes to maximizing the amount of car your money will buy, you simply can't go wrong with a big Detroit cruiser. A scant fraction of Ford's 1963 Galaxies were powered by the mighty 406/4-speed combination, and I'm willing to bet that even fewer were equipped with a convertible roof. Add in this car's thorough restoration and you have a great driving classic that's fun, historic AND affordable. If you're looking for a stylish, comfortable, and reliable piece that still commands a lot of respect on the highway and at the local car show, this hot drop-top is your ticket!
