Description

The mighty Chevelle is one of America's all-time automotive success stories. It's a straight-forward, high performance muscle car that's always enjoyed a cult following. That means it's pretty easy to find vintage A-Bodies which have been modified, tweaked, and morphed into anything from killer custom trophy winners to busted backyard travesties. But when it comes to how your classic Chevy feels and how you feel driving it, nothing quite compares to the way these cars rolled off USA-1's legendary assembly lines. After all, GM's largest division didn't get that nickname, or its storied reputation, by producing subpar iron; and when it comes to some of the greatest muscle cars of all time, why fix what ain't broke? A fully documented L78 big block car, this awesome Chevelle sport coupe has been completely restored, fitted with a fully rebuilt drivetrain, and decked in traditional Super Sport war paint. If you're looking for some street-able Chevrolet muscle that wraps killer performance in outstanding good looks, your Chevelle has arrived!

As a Chevelle purist, you're going to want a car that's true to its assembly line form. Fortunately, the sale of this pristine Chevy includes an original Protect-O-Plate. And that, in combination with the car's VIN, will verify the accuracy of its restoration.

One can't help but smile when they look at a Chevelle this cool. Assembled in Kansas City, Missouri, and delivered to R. L. Kilgore Jr. via Young Motor Company in Lyons, Kansas, it's everything car guys dream of from the first time they say “muscle car” to the day they trade their high octane V8 for an electric rascal motor. Decked in a smooth Cortez Silver basecoat and displaying a traditional pair of black Super Sport stripes, this coupe is the product of a professional, frame-off restoration that likely took years to complete. Its body is a carefully orchestrated combination of excellent panel gaps, doors that close better than new, and flat surfaces that stretch from tip to tail. Presently, its appearance is much better than any mass produced car from the 60s, carrying a super clean shine on top of an impressive, high quality restoration!

By 1969, Chevrolet's Chevelle had earned the tagline “America's most popular mid-size”. And GM, knowing not to mess with a good thing, rang in the new model year with minimal aesthetic changes. At the front of this coupe a stainless-trimmed grille centers a fresh “SS396” emblem between four T3 headlights, two clear parking lamps, and a new chrome bumper. Behind that grille, an SS-exclusive hood props finned louvers between a flashy “Chevelle” header script and pristine greenhouse glass that's traced by straight stainless trim and a black vinyl top. At the sides of that hood traditional chrome door handles perfectly complement correct chrome mirrors, dent-free wheel trim, and bold fender emblems. And at the back of the car, a satin valence centers a prominent “SS396” badge between clear tail lights, a second chrome bumper, and mirror-like exhaust tips.

Lift this Chevy's double-domed hood, and you'll find a correct L78 big block that wears a familiar 3955272 casting number and, according to its “JD” suffix stamp, creates exactly 375 horsepower. As it sits, this Chevelle is Chevrolet's flippant answer to GM's 400 cubic inch displacement cap on mid-size cars; even though its engine was marketed as a 396, everyone 'in the know' was well aware of its 402 cubic inch displacement. Oxygen and fuel enter the mill's combustion chambers through a freshly decaled air cleaner, new stainless fluid lines, and a reliable Holley carburetor. Below that carburetor a sea of brilliant Chevy Orange covers the block from its correct Winter intake all the way to its stamped steel oil pan. At the back of that intake a correct points distributor shoots spark through eight Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables bright chrome valve covers perfectly contrast correct, professionally restored exhaust manifolds. And in front of those valve covers a fresh Delco battery rides next to a heavy duty radiator that's equipped with GM branded hoses and familiar tower clamps. Aesthetically, this road ready Chevelle's glossy exterior paint is perfectly complemented by a textured, Satin Black engine bay. High quality extraneous bits like a Delco Moraine brake booster and correct alternator are present and accounted for. If you think this description sounds good, just wait 'til you hear the engine run!

Under this impressive A-Body you'll find a fully sorted chassis and super solid floorpans that, like the car's clean exterior panels and lust worthy engine, are restored to very high standards. At the center of those floors a rugged Muncie 4-speed sends power to a rebuilt GM 12-bolt that spins a correct posi-traction differential around pleasant 3.55 gears. Holding that stellar drivetrain in place is a beefy double A-arm front and 4-link rear suspension that, in addition to being properly tagged during the car's restoration, features factory power steering and correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust flows through chambered pipes to aggressive, glasspack-style resonators and spotless stainless tips. Power flows to the pavement via authentic Super Sport wheels and vintage F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Tread tires. Items like a fresh stainless fuel tank, standard stainless hardware, and a factory parking brake ensure years of carefree cruising. And, in keeping with the 396 up top, much attention has been paid to making sure everything under this Chevelle is clean and 100% road ready!

Open this second generation Chevelle's solid doors and you'll find an attractive black interior that appears to have been completely replaced during the car's extensive restoration. Centered in those new components is a trio of fresh bench and bucket seats that are fitted with high quality covers and bright stainless trim. Below those seats like-new carpet frames a traditional Hurst shifter inside a factory-correct console as well as thick, rubber floor mats. At the edge of that carpet, fresh, fade-free side panels give the cockpit much needed visual pop. Above those panels a tight black headliner shows none of the drying or fading that is typical of vintage cars. In front of the driver, a standard, “SS” branded steering wheel spins around a warp-free dash that's complete with Super Sport-specific trim. Behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk sandwiches a full-size spare between a new mat and correct decklid decal.

The sale of this super cool Super Sport includes two build sheets, an original owner's manual, factory paperwork, the original Protect-O-Plate outlined above, a few maintenance receipts, a pile of historical registrations, a pile of completed pictures, a short specs page, and a reproduction window sticker.

Over the past five years, RK Motors Charlotte has retailed more big block Chevelles than any company in the world, and this restoration-fresh Super Sport is one of the coolest A-Bodys we've ever offered. If you're in the market for a unique muscle car with an unbeatable combination of style and performance, this Chevy is your next classic!
