ALL BUSINESS
Feeling especially whimsical, and privy to leftover parts from its empire of mass transportation, GM set the automotive marketplace on its ear with the curve ball known as the 1991 Syclone. But unfortunately, the corporation's own bureaucracy killed the world-beating truck almost as fast as it hit dealerships, limiting production to just 2,995 units. Perhaps the most meticulously documented Syclone we've ever sold, this exceptional beast is a 10,854-mile time capsule that, according to the folks at CarFax, has lived its 31-year life free of any damage or accident repairs. Solid factory sheetmetal reflects a wet-looking coat of original GM code 19 Black, which centers straight planes in crisp lines and even gaps. And great looking, factory-correct aero plays well with a tight factory tonneau cover.
TURBO PIONEER
GM's stalwart 4300 V6 has, through a myriad of engineering changes, anchored the company's truck line for close to 40 years. For Syclone duty, the LB4 4300 saw significant mechanical upgrades. Better pistons and better breathing intake and exhaust manifolds joined a Mitsubishi TD06-17C turbocharger, a Garrett water/air intercooler and a 48mm twin-bore throttle body that was borrowed from Chevrolet's 5.7 liter V8. All those carefully calculated tweaks and improvements added up to a very impressive 280 horsepower and 350 lb./ft. of V8-slaying torque. And that meant the truck's strip-scorching times would not only best GM's own Camaro and Corvette, but also catapult it to the forefront of 1990s performance! Mechanically, everything, from this GMC's dry oil pan to its pliable air tube, is clean, lean and largely weather-free. And one glance at our high-resolution photos is all it takes to see that the truck has been meticulously maintained by loving enthusiasts.
STYLE AND SUBSTANCE
With that kind of power on tap, it should come as no surprise that GM equipped the bottom of this pickup with a host of noteworthy upgrades. Behind the raucous engine, a reliable 4L60 automatic makes the most of a factory 10-bolt that's finished with a limited-slip differential and sporty, 3.42 gears. That gearbox twists torque to BorgWarner all-wheel drive, which sends 35% of its power to the front wheels. Speaking of front wheels, this truck's massive meats are pointed by factory power steering. Speaking of power-assist, the truck's power-assisted brake system is one of the first to be fully accompanied by standard anti-lock technology. At the center of the tuned sport suspension, factory-spec single-into-dual pipes hang Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers behind a conservative catalytic converter. And power meets the pavement through handsome factory alloys, which spin original 245/50ZR16 Firestone Firehawk SVXs around red “GMC” logos.
SIMPLE IS GOOD
Inside this awesome street bruiser, you'll find a correct Gray and Black interior that's virtually spotless. Typical GMC fashion dictates more comfort than sport, but then, that's what GM's premium truck brand has increasingly gravitated toward. And naturally, that means this Syclone is loaded with all the features you'd expect including power windows, power locks, climate control, Cruise Control and a tilt steering wheel. In front of that wheel, red-piped factory buckets are cushy and comfortable. Opposite those seats, factory-spec, Pontiac-sourced gauges inhabit a blocky dash that's finished with optional Delco audio. And below that dash, “GM” branded floor mats frame a small console and simple factory shifter.
