Ford Icons Include F-150, Mustang, Explorer, Transit, Ranger, And Bronco

When the 2021 Ford Bronco was revealed last summer, Ford also used the opportunity to name the reborn SUV an “Icon.” Since then, the Ford Icons list has grown to also include the Ford F-150 and Ford Mustang, in addition to the Ford Bronco. Ford has also spoken at length about how its Icons must adapt to survive in an ever-changing world, and now, it has expanded that family as well.

At last week’s Capital Markets Day presentation, FoMoCo revealed a trio of new models that it also considers Ford Icons – the Ford Explorer, Ford Transit, and Ford Ranger. On the surface, this may seem like a bit of an odd fit, but all three models are long-running nameplates with a good bit of salesroom success.

Ford has spoken at length about how the Ford Mustang Mach-E and 2021 Ford F-150 equipped with its 3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid have “built a future” for those iconic nameplates, and now we can add the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, E-Transit, and a forthcoming Explorer EV to that list as well. Additionally, Ford CEO Jim Farley recently hinted at the possibility of an all-electric Bronco, too.

The big question that all of this creates, then, is just what sort of fate awaits Ford’s non-Icon models, including the Ford Edge, Ford Escape, Ford EcoSport, Ford Expedition, and Ford Super Duty? Obviously, we know that the Super Duty and Expedition aren’t going anywhere (the latter is undergoing a refresh for 2022, after all). But we can’t say the same for the rest.

As we reported last summer, the next-generation Edge has reportedly already been cancelled as the Ford Oakville Assembly Plant – which builds the Edge and Lincoln Nautilus – will be retooled in 2024 to build five new electric vehicles beginning in 2025. Thus, it’ll be interesting to see if Ford eventually moves toward an all-Icon lineup, or chooses to continue offering non-Icon models as well.
